The fonds consists of photographic extracts from a log kept by Midshipman James Ferris Prowse whilst aboard the H.M.S. Thetis under Captain Augustus L. Kuper. There are 90 negatives (2 negatives per page) and 42 print copies.

The printed extracts are those which have any mention of any place or point near Vancouver Island or Queen Charlotte's Island (Haida Gwaii), or of any item which might be of interest. These items are marked in red pen on the right hard edge of the photographic prints. The period covered is from the arrival of the ship outside the straits of San Juan de Fuca on May 22, 1852 to the time it sailed from Esquimalt Harbour for England on January 22, 1853.

The file consists of an original letterpress book containing Lowe's outgoing correspondence from San Francisco. The correspondence dates from 14 May 1852 to 10 December 1859. The book is arranged chronologically and Lowe does not appear to have used the alphabetical tabs at the front of the book. .

The file consists of one letter, written by Elizabeth McDonald to her uncle Horatio Nelson Calder in 1852. The letter was written from Christ Church Cumberland. The bottom appears to have been cut off at some point. Elizabeth introduces herself to her uncle and provides details of how they are related.

McDonald's cousin, Nancy Budd, is thought to have married Michael Wren. Her son, Charles Wren, married Elizabeth Ross, daughter of Charles and Isabella (Mainville) Ross.

The volume contains copies of correspondence from Hudson's Bay Company House in London to Colonial Surveyor J.D. Pemberton and Governor James Douglas, as well as individual letters from Douglas and other Colonial officials to Pemberton and Pearse bound into the book. There are also lists of reports issued by Pemberton and extracts from minutes of council regarding regulations for the sale of land, letters and papers regarding the Race Rocks lighthouse, and correspondence relating to the Union of the colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia.

The file contains abstracts of income and expenditure in regard to Colony of Vancouver Island land sales and survey costs; abstracts from land registers and extracts from despatches regarding Hudson's Bay Company land sales as well as correspondence and other general accounts relating to Colony and Hudson's Bay Company affairs. It also includes a report on the defects and impediments in Victoria Harbour, with associated estimates for improvement.

The file consists of correspondence sent to Paul Fraser by a variety of correspondents. The first four pages of one letter are missing. Much of the correspondence is personal in nature, and senders include Fraser's nephews A.G. Fraser and Hugh Fraser, and his brother Alexander.

The file consists of letters outward written by W.F. Tolmie at Fort Nisqually between 1853 and 1858. The letters (mostly transcripts) are to various HBC forts and to William Sinclair of the nearby Puget Sound Agricultural Company and relate to activities in and around the Fort and relations with the Americans and the local Indigenous community. There is also a letter to the Governor of Washington Territory, Fayette McMullen, dated January 12, 1858 making an application for clemency on behalf of an Indigenous man named Leschi.

In addition, there is an unfolded envelope addressed to Tolmie from William Sinclair dated April 20, 1848 but the letter is no longer attached.

The file consists of both original and photostat copies of correspondence written by James Anderson between 1854 and 1859. Correspondence is both personal and professional in nature. The majority of the correspondence is addressed to Sir George Simpson, although the file also includes letters to Anderson's brother, Alexander Caulfield Anderson, and to a number of other HBC employees.

The photostats appear to have been made of pages 284 to 308 of a letterbook written while Anderson was at Lake Simcoe between December 1858 and November 1859.

The file consists of pages taken from the minute book of the probate court in Pierce County, Washington. It is unclear how the pages made their way into the Charles Ross collection, but many of the names mentioned in the minutes appear elsewhere in Wren family records. The judge and clerk of the court appears to have been a Mr. W. P. Dougherty; this may be William Pagan Dougherty, father of Annie Wren's husband, George James Dougherty.

The pages appear to have been intentionally torn out of a bound volume and saved.
