Quesnel Forest District resource management records

This series consists of a variety of records related to resource use and recreation management created from 1982-2002 by the Quesnel Forest District, a division of the Cariboo Forest Region. These records relate to the use and management of natural resources in the area, as well as recreation resources in Provincial forests. This includes trails and historical sites with value for tourism or other recreational uses. The records document the location, management, promotion and use of such sites.

The series includes the following types of records:

Local Resource Use Plans (LRUP) for the Barkerville and Blackwater areas. These plans are designed to resolve resource use conflicts in specific areas at the local level.

Resource management inventory files relate to the identification of the present and future opportunities from the Provincial Forest recreation resource, such as heritage trails. This also includes files on archaeological sites.

Resource management planning records relate to the establishment of recreation management objectives for the Provincial Forest recreation resource. Includes general information about types of plans as well as specific information concerning individual plans including: provincial, regional and district recreation plans, rivers and trails plans, cave or karst management plans, and historic (heritage) trail management plans.

Forest Service project site/trail files relate to the routine maintenance, rehabilitation and development of Forest Service recreation sites and trails. Includes records relating to the planning, designation, assessment, design and construction of recreation sites and trails.

Recreation brochures and maps were used to inform the public about forest etiquette, integrated resource management practices and field conditions. Also includes information about recreation signs and posters as well as general tourism information and notable sites in the area.

The series also includes procedures on the following subjects: recreation program implementation referrals; commercial use of crown forests; and resource management inventories.

Types of records vary widely, but can include correspondence, reports, studies, published material, photos, and maps.

Harry Ferguson interview

Ferguson describes his father's life as a gold miner who came over in 1862 from Belfast via San Francisco; he went to Barkerville; he built a hotel in Clinton and then bought a hotel on the south side of the lake in 1885; in 1874 his father took the first horses to Alberta with 300 head for the Mounted Police; a description of his father's journey is given; and he describes growing up in Salmon Arm. Herb Gardner interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], [196-] SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Herb Gardner was interviewed while holding the office of Mayor of Williams Lake. He describes the federal building; the regional board; urban planning; and the electoral process. Before elections, people were appointed to the board. Demographics of the district. Mr. Gardner offers his own personal history; born in Quesnel and lived in Barkerville; stories about old timers; his father came into the country in 1900, and was a shoemaker before becoming a miner; eventually his father ran a stopping house on a ranch; in 1928 the family moved to Quesnel and worked in the saw mill business. He describes what Williams Lake was like back then.

TRACK 2: Mr. Gardner comments about how smaller sawmills were driven out by economics and larger ones took their place; the lumber industry and how it drives the economy of Williams Lake; prospecting and cattle ranching; stampedes; how much he likes living in Williams Lake.
