Reports on education by William Plenderleith

The file consists of two reports by William Plenderleith from 1937. The first is titled "An Experiment in the Reorganization and the Administration of a Rural Inspectoral Unit in British Columbia." The second is a typescript copy titled "Report on Education in New Brunswick", with appendices dealing with the Matsqui - Sumas - Abbotsford Administrative Area and the Peace River Plan.

Reminiscences of William W. Phillips

The file contains the reminiscences of William W. Phillip's travels in the U.K.and Europe, of his journey with the overlanders of 1862 to the Cariboo, and of his life and travels in the United States (1862-1916); notes on family and early days. Reminiscences have been transcribed.

Memoirs of James A. Pedley

The file consists of the memoirs of James A. Pedley, who emigrated from England in 1912, worked on Grand Trunk Pacific construction near Tete Jaune Cache, served overseas, pre-empted land in the Uncha Valley, then joined the B.C. Forest Service, initially at Southbank, in 1927.

Photographs of surveys in the Northern Interior

The file consists of 21 photographs showing survey work in the Northern Interior region of British Columbia, primarily in the Nechako Region. The majority of the photographs are identified with captions (see file list below). The photographs show the routine work of surveyors, but are not surveying photographs.

Letters from Mark Osborn to Danvers Osborn

The file contains two letters addressed to Osborn Danvers, the Telegraph Office supervisor at Bamfield in 1916. The letters are from his cousin Mark Osborn of Bedford, England. In them, Mark Osborn describes his visit in 1866 to Victoria and Esquimalt aboard H.M.S. Alert and discusses the war.

Certificates

The file contains a marriage certificate for John Oliver and Elizabeth Woodward, dated 1886. It also contains an envelope and certificate of baptism for Sarah Ellen Oliver, their daughter.

Reminiscences of Bishop Cridge

The file contains three typescript copies of "Reminiscences of Bishop Cridge" by Edgar Fawcett. Each copy has slightly different photographic illustrations. Includes list of members of Reformed Episcopal Church at its founding and extracts from Bishop Cridge's diary.

Album : Blankenbach photographs

The file consists of a photograph compiled by the Frederick and Alice Blankenbach family during their time at "Westward Ho" at the corner of Cadboro Bay and Telegraph Bay Road in Oak Bay, B.C. The album contains photographs of the Blankenbach family and friends, their homes and neighbourhoods, taken between ca. 1902 and 1905.

Photos of Prince Rupert and Nanaimo

The file consists of 15 black and white photos taken in Prince Rupert and Nanaimo in the 1940s. They appear to have been taken by a few different unknown photographers, though one photograph was taken by William Walker Wrathall, a Prince Rupert photographer. Some of the photographs have titles handwritten in French, while others are printed in English.

Historical sketches

The file contains copies of historical sketches of Mennonite colony, near Vanderhoof, British Columbia (1918-1921), along with capsule biographies and photocopies of photographs of early settlers. Prepared by Jacob V. Neufeld for the Nechako Valley Historical Society in 1980.

Information relating to Alexander Lorraine Carruthers

The file contains a copy of a biography of Alexander Lorraine Carruthers, P. Eng. M.E.I.C. (Deputy Minister of Public Works, 1947-1948) written by Ramsay Murray, M.E.I.C. Engineer for the Engineering Institute of Canada, Vancouver Island Branch newsletter of March 1971. It also contains another biography of Carruthers dated May 9, 1978 and a photograph of him. This material is accompanied by 1987 correspondence between the Ministry of Transportation and Highways and the Corporation of the District of Burnaby, regarding the material.

Thirty years a missionary on the West Coast of Vancouver Island / Charles Moser and Dorothy Abraham

The file contains an edited copy of the typescript "Thirty years a missionary on the West Coast of Vancouver Island", probably made around 1959. The typescript contains an account of the experiences of Father Charles Moser, O.S.B., as a missionary stationed at the Clayoquot villages of Opitsat and Hesquiat between 1900 and 1930, based on his original diary. The manuscript was produced by Mrs. Dorothy Abraham, who also wrote the introduction to it. The editing appears to have been done by Father Moser and by Dorothy Abraham.

The file also contains introductory notes by Mrs. Abraham and two letters to her from Father Moser (dated 1949 and 1959), and a copy of a newspaper article about Father Moser written by Abraham in 1966. There is also a b&w portrait photograph of Father Moser, taken by the Drake Bros Studio, Silverton, Oregon.

Records removed from probate files

The file consists of records that were found in collection at the BC Archives. They were located in November 2021 in a box of miscellaneous court records. The majority of these records had been pulled from files in GR-1304 (Victoria Supreme Court probate files) during the microfilming of those records in the 1980s. While the majority of the records in that box were reunited with their original files, the records in this file remain loose. Archives staff cannot be sure that they were all pulled from GR-1304 and they may belong to records in another series.

The file consists of 3 leather pocket books and several small scraps of paper. The file includes a receipt dated 1864 between an Edward Finch (?) and a P. Uhart (?).a receipt dated June 21 1864 at Victoria for payment between Peter McQuade and the Schooner North Star (master William McCulloch), a receipt dated at Victoria June 11, 1864 between Samuel Smith and Peter McQuade, a receipt dated at Kamloops July 31, 1873 mentioning an Alexander Smith, Joseph Bushie, and Edward [Chund?], a reciept dated at New Westminster February 4 [no date] regarding Sir Patrick Killey and William Farson (?), and a receipt written in French on 13 February 1865 between a Rene Sazet and a Pierre (?) Bonaparte. There is also a receipt dated November 2 1892 that mentions the estate of Morris Moss, as well as an M. Manson and an Alex McLean. The file also consists of material pulled out of GR-1304 file 1726 (Thomas Smith, d. 1892). These items are marked in the file but include an empty leather pocketbook, a copy of a poem entitled "When the Rye Come Hame," a receipt dated at Victoria on December 31, 1861 and a letter written by a James Smith in Charlotteville, January 2 1885. These records do not appear to relate to the Thomas Smith file and were removed in the 1980s.

Of the two remaining pocketbooks, one contains a Pacific Diary for the Year 1872 published in San Francisco. The diary itself is blank. The other notebooks is in very fragile condition and has various notes that have been crossed out. These include notes on Metlakakklah (sic), Fort Simpson, Skeena, Wrangel, Victoria. It also includes various assorted other notes.

Ben Morley file

The file contains three letters and three photographs relating to Ben Morley. There are carbon copies of two letters written by Ben Morley in 1967; one to the Editor of the Vancouver Sun and one to Dr. Gordon Shrum of the BC Hydro and Power Authority. Both letters concern the restoration of the S.S. Minto. There is also a reply from Hugh Keenleyside, Chair of BC Hydro. The three photographs include a copy print of Captain McLennan, a copy print of a 1928 photograph showing Captain W. Kirby's farewell party to the S.S. Slocan and a photograph from 1919, mounted on cardboard, showing the first year commercial class at the Nelson High School.

Essays and other material

The file contains essays and other material created by C. F. Morison. It includes "Reminiscences of British Columbia from 1862 by a pioneer of the North West Coast," written by Charles Morison in 1920; "A brief narrative history of early British Columbia, 1862-1876", which includes revisions by his son, J.W. Morison, 1966; letter to the Reverend A.C. Pound, 1926, re history of Hazelton; pioneer form, C.F. Morison, ca. 1920s.

James C. Prevost correspondence

The file consists of correspondence received by James C. Prevost, mostly during his time as public administrator. The records were found in collection in a box of miscellaneous court records, although since the majority of the records were found to have been pulled from GR-1304 (Victoria probate records), it is assumed that these letters were also removed from files in that series.

Charles Pooley correspondence

The file consists of correspondence sent to Charles Pooley, mostly in his capacity as public administrator. The correspondence was found in collection in a file of miscellaneous court records. The majority of these records were removed from GR-1304 (Victoria probate files) during microfilming in the 1980s. It is assumed that these letters were also pulled from files, but the files could not be identified.

Report of the Royal Flush group of mineral claims

The file contains mining engineer Charles Moore's examination and report of the Royal Flush group of mineral claims (Telegraph, Royal Flush, Anaconda and the United Verde mineral claims) in the Nelson Mining Division of the West Kootenay District of British Columbia (original and copy).

Bill of sale between Jean Caux and James Reid

The file consists of a copy of a bill of sale between Jean Caux (Cataline) and James Reid of Quesnellemouth. The bill of sale is dated at Quesnellemouth 2 June 1888. The record clearly formed part of a larger court file originally, as W.A. Johnston, J.P. has noted "A - This is the paper writing referred to in the annex and affidavit of John Stephenson."

The record was found in collection and was separated from its original file.

Francisco Marescal notes

The file consists of one page of notes regarding two agreements involving Francisco Marescal. The first is between Marescal and H.A. Messenger and is in regards to a ten-year lease dated April 2 1875 for the north half of the northwest quarter and the south east quarter of the northwest quarter of section 7, township 4, north of range 11 east. The second note regards a patent between the United States and Marescal dated September 9, 1881. It was recorded December 10, 1881 and is for the franctional northwest quarter of section 7 in township 4 north of range 11 east.

Land Registry office receipt

The file consists of one receipt issued by the Land Registry Office in 1866. It relates to subdivisions 1, 7 and 8, lot 21, Spring Ridge, Victoria District. This land was owned by Honore Passerard.

Manuscripts relating to the purchase of Alaska

The file consists of manuscripts relating to the purchase of Alaska by the U.S.A, compiled by David Hunter Miller. These documents address the original concepts, negotiations and ratification of the treaty together with post transfer problems, negotiations, and delay in payment. Indexed.

Manuscript magazine, The Leisure Hour

"The Leisure Hour": manuscript magazine produced for students at Victoria High School, April 1887, "Edited" by J. Boyd and Cary Pope. The magazine consists of vignettes of school life, reports of social events in Victoria, B.C. Also includes a 4 page supplement containing humorous and moral anecdotes as well as riddles - presented to "Editress of the girls' paper as a momento of her school-life" and marginalia and annotations by Kenneth Drury, 1908.
