Royal Winnipeg Rifles crest at Willows Camp

Photograph depicts a design made of small stones and pebbles outside one of the tents at Willows Camp. This symbol is in fact that of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and features a little devil figure holding a pitchfork. The motto reads Hosti Acie Nominati (later corrected to Hostium acie nominati -- 'Named by the enemy force'). The design is further decorated with the addition of "No. 5 Platoon". These crests made of small decorated stones and pebbles were placed around the camp by soldiers to identify groups such as platoons and companies who resided in those areas. As this picture was taken during the mobilization of the Siberian Expeditionary Force which included recruits from all corners of Canada, it is possible that the soldiers who were quartered in this area of the camp may had been drafted from the prairies to join 'B' Company (260th Battalion).
