Annual appointments

Series consists of appointments for Sisters into missions or roles within the congregation. Appointments – also called obediences, nominations, assignments or annuaries – record where each Sister was missioned, living, studying or convalescing in any given year. They document the Sister's name, location, and often role within the mission but no other identifying information.

The bound volumes, starting in 1933, are divided into Provinces and then into houses. The appointments for St. Joseph’s Province by house (MS-3569-05) were created from the originals for ease of reference. Additional lists and statistics were compiled on a variety topics including list of Sisters and Sisters who have left the Community, SSA institutions as well as school and hospital statistics.

This series also contains internal telephone, address and e-mail directories.

Map of Pacific Coast, 1791

Item consists of a glass plate negative of a reproduction of a 1791 map of a portion of the North America Pacific coastline. This portion shows California. The item is a companion to J-07998.

Maps and other reference material

The series consists of collected maps and illustrated portraits in glass copy negative format. The material is not original to the Maynard family, but Hannah or Richard Maynard likely created the copy negatives. The majority of the items are prints of various maps on glass plate negative and two maps on nitrate negative. The items have not been inventoried, but broadly include maps of North and South America, Canada, British Columbia, Quadra Island, Friendly Cove, and railway routes in Canada and British Columbia. There are also maps of exploration voyages, such as Cook's voyage. There are a few instances of illustrated portraits, presumably of explorers. There is one print of Murillo's Immaculate Conception.

Ships and shipping

Series consists of 103 photographs of ships and shipping attributed to Richard or Hannah Maynard. Other photographers are also likely. Images depict views of Esquimalt, the Victoria Inner Harbour, a variety of ships and boats, and portraits of crew members.

BC Missions and Residential Schools

The sub-series consists of BC Missions and Residential Schools records. Records include correspondence, printed materials, reports, articles, notes, deeds, agreements, school registers, financial registers, nominal rolls and census records, and some financial records.

Translations of Vancouver Island treaties

The series consists of three documents relating to MS-0772 Register of land purchases from Indians. The agreements recorded in the register are referred to as the Vancouver Island treaties (formerly known as the Douglas or Fort Victoria treaties). In February 2017 a conference was held at the Songhees Wellness Centre, inviting Indigenous and non-Indigenous islanders to discuss the treaties, their history, and their present-day impact.

The conference commissioned the first translations of two of the treaties into Lekwungen by Songhees Elder Dr. Elmer George, and a cultural interpretation of the treaties in SENĆOŦEN by STOLȻEŁ, Tsartlip Elder John Elliot Sr. The Lekwungen translations are of the če’q’nein nəč’elŋxʷ- kʷ’ats’ayč iʔ xpeʔ kʷəliq̌a (Chekonein treaty) and the Teechamitsa treaty.

Dr. Elmer George and John Elliot Sr. were awarded the Meritorious Service Award by the Governor General of Canada in recognition of this work.

Alumnae Association records

The series consists of the records of the Alumnae Association and document its administrative functions. The records include bylaws, reports, minutes, treasury records, and document Begbie Hall, Pemberton Chapel, and garden projects. The series also includes records relating to class reunions. The records of the Alumnae Association Lower Mainland Branch are also included here. Records pertaining to the administration of the Archives, such as minutes, reports, and correspondence, are included here.

Victoria Sewage Treatment Alliance fonds

The fonds consists of records created and compiled by the Victoria Sewage Treatment Alliance (VSTA) and document the organizations efforts to raise awareness about the need for sewage treatment in the greater Victoria area. The VSTA, formed in 2005, is a volunteer organization with the goal of attaining sustainable and affordable sewage treatment for Victoria and the Capital Regional District (CRD).

The records consist primarily of a collection of reports, meeting minutes, and media coverage, as well as some audiovisual materials and photographs. The involvement of Mr. Floatie, the highly visible mascot of the campaign, is well documented in the photographs.

The series consists of textual records created or collected by the VSTA. A large number of the records are meeting minutes, reports, or records otherwise documenting the activities of the Capital Regional District (CRD), and specifically the activities of the Core Area Liquid Waste Management Committee.

The series also contains records created to raise awareness about pollution risks of untreated sewage, such as petitions, letter-writing campaigns, and event planning (such as the Toilet Regatta). Events are further documented in series MS-3358: Photographs.

The digital photograph is created by David Ellingsen in 2020 as part of the Weather Patterns series [that includes PDP10342, PDP10343, PDP10344, PDP10345, and PDP10346]. The overall image is composite of photographs of ocean views taken in Victoria over the course of the year.

The image represents climate change and the environmental conditions that brought about the COVID-19 pandemic.

The collection consists of single items, reports, photocopies, photographs and other small collections donated and loaned to the BC Archives which document all aspects of the political, economic, social and cultural history of the province. There are private records produced by individuals, businesses and organizations and acquired by the Archives over many years from all areas of the Province and varying widely in subject matter. They consist of account books and journals, letters and diaries of gold seekers, pioneers, missionaries, and school teachers, literary manuscripts, photographs, the papers of natural historians and students and the personal and family papers of notable settlers and residents of the province.
There are also some provincial and federal government records which either came to the Archives as single items or files or were removed from other series.

British Columbia Archives

John Waddell diary

The diary documents the journey of miner John Waddell (1818-1870) to Vancouver Island in 1862 in search of gold during the Cariboo Gold Rush. Also included are notes on his journey to San Francisco in early 1862 aboard the California steamer Northern Light. The diary also describes his dealings with George A. Walkem, third Premier of British Columbia.

The transcript, completed by the donor in May 2017, includes and introduction and notes relevant to the diary's content.

The digital photograph is created by David Ellingsen in 2020 as part of the Weather Patterns series [that includes PDP10342, PDP10343, PDP10345, PDP10346 and PDP10347]. The overall image is a composite of many photographs of ocean views taken in Victoria and Quadra Island over the course of the year.

Arts and culture funding case files

The series consists of successful applications for grant and scholarship programs administered by the program area created between 2014-2016 in British Columbia. Grants and scholarships are available to community and professional arts and cultural organizations and individual artists through the British Columbia Arts Council and other ministry arts and culture funding programs. British Columbia Arts Council funding is available under the Arts Council Act (RSBC 1996, c. 19). Successful applications document a core function of the program area and possess considerable historical and informational value in the area of the development of British Columbia's arts sector. This arts funding supports and encourages various cultural and artistic endeavors, including arts festivals, arts training, community and regional arts development, professional performing arts (e.g., dance and theatre), visual arts, literary and publishing arts, and media arts. The Arts and Cultural Development branch review the funding applications and make funding recommendations which, depending on the funding program, may be submitted to the BC Arts Council for approval.

This series is arranged by fiscal year and applicant name. It includes successful grant applications, allocation records, final reports from the recipient of the grant, and other supporting documents. Business administration and marketing records

The series consists of corporate compliance documents and records of business operations in British Columbia and Washington state. The series includes documentation of trademarks, newsletters, membership directories, and quality control. Also included are records documenting the Bureau’s marketing and advertising activities, such as sample advertisements, brochures, guides, and correspondence. There are also five 16 mm films in this series.
