Action on the Columbia

The item is a composite print of an industrial film made around 1964. It shows the construction of the Mica, Duncan and Arrow Dams in the Columbia River basin. Some of the communities in the project area are shown and the problems and benefits are discussed. There is footage of Revelstoke and Trail-Kaslo area, flooding of the Columbia near Trail and aerial views of area communities. There is also footage of the 1964 ratification of the Columbia River Treaty at the International Peace Arch, with US President Johnson, Canadian Prime Minister Pearson and BC Premier Bennett.

Adventure along the Trans-Canada Highway

The item is a composite film print of a travelogue produced by Guided Tour Productions, ca. 1960. It depicts a trip from Ottawa to the Pacific coast by Greyhound Bus. BC footage includes: Rogers Pass, the Thompson/Okanagan Region, Vancouver (Stanley Park, Lion's Gate Bridge), Victoria (Empress Hotel etc.) and the Butchart Gardens.

Airborne garbage

The item is a release print of a documentary film made by Fortune Films Ltd., ca. 1957. It describes the growing menace of air pollution as a result of industrial growth and urban development in BC. Animated cartoons reveal the historical roots of air pollution in Vancouver. Live-action footage includes general views of Vancouver, as well as various sources of air pollution -- smokestacks, sawmill waste burners, traffic, waste incinerators, etc. Efforts to regulate the problem are shown.

Alternative energy

The item is a composite print of an industrial film made in 1974. It depicts the B.C. Alternative Energy Show at the 1974 Pacific National Exhibition. Excerpts from the public seminars are shown, along with scenes of exhibits, displays and demonstrations dealing with energy conservation and alternative energy sources (solar, wind, geothermal, etc.), electric vehicles, appropriate technology, and so on.

The item is a negative reel of an industrial film from 1965. It shows the construction at the Arrow dam site, September 1965. There are also aerial views, heavy equipment, dredging and barge dumping fill in lake, etc.

Ash River and Port Alberni

The item is a film print of unedited footage from around 1958. It contains winter scenes with heavy equipment at work, surveying, plowing snow, office interior, power plant, substation exteriors, etc. and tunnel or penstock construction at Ash River project on Great Central Lake.

At your finger tip

The item is a release print of an industrial film made by Crawley Films Ltd. for the Canadian Electrical Association in 1961. The film depicts a cross-country look at the major installations comprising Canada's electrical industry. It shows various methods of generating electrical power and its importance to industry. Some of the footage (such as the section on hydro-electric power) obviously shows British Columbia, but specific locations are not identified in the film.

B.C. '78

The item is a release print of a promotional film from 1978. It is a revised version of British Columbia Today (1976). This version is shorter, and includes updated narration, some new footage of Hydro projects, and no direct reference to American investors.

B.C. Electric Company film productions

The sub-series consists of films produced by or for the British Columbia Electric Company during the years 1945-1961. There are films on all of the company's major engineering projects from that period: all phases of the Bridge River hydro-electric development; construction of dams, power plants and transmission lines throughout the Lower Mainland; and the laying of undersea power lines to Vancouver Island. Most of these "project films" are detailed and technical in nature, intended mainly for an engineering audience. Other titles, created for public relations use, promote BC Electric transit, natural gas and home electrical services. A few, such as GARDEN RENDEZVOUS, VACATION TIME and VANCOUVER DIAMOND JUBILEE, do not relate to BC Electric operations, but were sponsored and distributed by the company for general interest.

B.C. Hydro film productions

The sub-series consists of film produced by or the British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority during the years 1961-1984. The films document the construction of major dams and hydro-electric plants at Arrow Lake, Duncan Lake and Mica Creek in the Columbia River basin and the W.A.C. Bennett (Portage Mountain) Dam on the Peace River, as well as the Revelstoke and Seven Mile projects of the 1970s. From the late 1970s and early 1980s, there is a group of public relations films on alternative energy sources and energy conservation. Also included are films on the Burrard Thermal Generating Station at Ioco, a Greater Vancouver bus route, and safety procedures for linemen, as well as some unedited footage and TV commercials.

BC Power Commission 58/59 review

The item consists of reel of film footage from 1958-1959. It contains a spliced-together footage compilation showing various Power Commission operations: mobile 500KW diesel generating unit arrives in Revelstoke, cable-laying barge, boats and shore crew lay underwater line to Thetis & Kuper Islands, island residents celebrate at a picnic, where First Nations dancers perform, power plant construction & tunnel work at Ash River project on Great Central Lake [similar tunnelling shots in Men at Work], continuing through winter, completed Ash River Generating Station and penstock, shots of Chemainus sawmill and new power station.

BC Power Commission miscellany

The item consists of film footage from ca. 1957. It contains assorted footage, including exterior and interior of a power plant, aerial views of forest, power line right-of-way, unidentified seaside town, penstocks and Seton powerhouse at Bridge River, slash burning, town, mountains, Victoria and dam construction site.

B.C. today

The item is a workprint of a promotional film from 1981. It is a revised/updated version of British Columbia Today (1976). It includes footage of Hat Creek, the W.A.C. Bennett Dam, Kootenay Canal, and the Mica and Seven Mile projects.

Behind the switch

The item is a composite print of an educational film made in 1958. It shows how hydroelectric power is harnessed and distributed to homes and industry. Shows dam and powerhouse sites, the maintenance of power lines, and the various users of electricity. It is a companion film to NATURE'S MIRACLE.

Biomass prospects

The item is an answer print of an industrial film from 1979. It shows the creation of electrical energy from garbage or forest wastes and gas from fermentation. A fascinating study of the possibilities available to us in the conversion of biomass from a refuse problem into an energy source. The Iona Island Sewage Treatment Plant is featured.

Bridge River

The item is a composite print of an industrial film made between ca. 1945 and 1948. It shows the first phase of the Bridge River Project including construction of the Bridge River diversion dam, Seton Lake powerhouse, penstock on Mission Mountain, and power transmission lines to Vancouver; site preparation for La Joie storage dam and opening of first phase on 23 October 1948. There is also footage of Vancouver and vicinity emphasizing demand for electrical power.

Bridge River stage two (dam) : part 1 : Soletanche

The item is an industrial film on a black and white workprint made between 1956 and 1960. It contains footage of the construction of the Mission Dam on the Bridge River project Soletanche and shows special operations (1958-59) required to seal the foundations and substrata under the site to prevent seepage. Depicts work to remove sections of old steel pilings (cut loose by divers with torches working in mud-filled pits); driving a wall of sheet pilings; manufacturing a clay/cement grout mixture and forcing it into the substrata under pressure to form an impervious curtain. This film is likely very similar to the French-language film produced for the French engineering firm (Soletanche Ltd.) which carried out the work.

Bridge River stage two (dam) : part 2

The item is an industrial film on a colour print made in the late 1950s. It contains footage showing the construction of Mission Dam on Bridge River from 1956 to 60, intended to increase the height of Carpenter Lake. The new dam structure incorporated the original 1948 diversion dam. The film begins with an overview of the Bridge River development.

Bridge River unit no. 4

The item is an Industrial film on a colour print made in the early 1950s. It contains footage of the construction of the fourth penstock down Mission Mountain, to drive generator no. 4 at Seton powerhouse of the Bridge River project.

British Columbia Electric : streetcars & streetcar track removal

The item consists of unedited film footage from 1955 on two rolls. It contains footage of the demise of BC Electric's last Vancouver streetcar run. The first roll shows streetcars in operation at various points along Hastings Street from Granville Street to the Kootenay Loop exchange, 18 April 1955. The second roll, shot shortly afterward, shows crews removing the streetcar tracks along Hastings and repaving the street.
