Rocky Mountain Forest District timber tenures

This series consists of timber tenures from the Rocky Mountain Forest District for the years 1946-2008. This series may also include records created by the Cranbrook, Invermere and Kootenay Lake Forest Districts, as well as the Nelson and Southern Interior Forest Regions. Note that the names and boundaries of districts and regions varied over the years.

Timber tenures include replaceable forest licences, licences to cut, replaceable timber sale licences, non-replaceable timber sale licences, woodlot licences, special use permits and Christmas tree permits. There are also records regarding tree farm licence (TFL) 13, TFL 14, TFL 26, TFL 36 and TFL 37.

Files contain cutting permits, legal documents, operations information, charts, applications, development plans, annual reports, management plans, an “A” number bid deposit register, correspondence, maps, reports, amendments, logging inspection reports, logging plans, licences, policy, procedures, and a variety of other documents.

The series also includes some records related to silviculture. These include silviculture openings, obligations, as well as silviculture experiment (SX) files regard trials completed under the jurisdiction of the silviculture program. Includes records detailing silviculture trials conducted, working plans, results, evaluations, reports, models, maps and data. Silviculture obligations may relate to major licensees, woodlot licences or the small business program.

Rocky Mountain Forest District range management records

This series consists of range management records from the Rocky Mountain Forest District for the years 1940-2008. This series may also include records created by the Cranbrook, Kootenay Lake and Invermere Forest Districts, as well as the Nelson and Southern Interior Forest Regions. Note that the names and boundaries of districts and regions varied over the years.

Records relate to the administration of Grazing Licences and Grazing Permits as defined under the Range Act, and Grazing Leases as defined under the Land Act. This includes their issuance, amendment, transfer, billing, monitoring, policy, and administration. This may include records concerning additions and deletions of land and/or authorized Animal Unit Months (AUM) from grazing tenures. There are also a few range tenure appeal files.

Each grazing permit and licence file relates to a particular range tenure. Note that there may be additional individuals or companies who held the tenure over time which are not listed in the file title. Files within each box are arranged alphabetically by file title.

The series also includes individual range unit files which relate to the management of larger range units. These are areas of range land that may be shared by multiple tenure holders. This includes operational records such as range unit plans, inspections covering more than one range tenure, and general information concerning the history of the management of specific range units. This includes a files regarding the impact of the flooding on rage use resulting from the Libby Dam.

Records in this series include tenure application forms, grazing plans, range use plans, correspondence, maps, photos, surveys, reports, records determining range boundaries and use, and information on range improvements and clearing. Improvements can include infrastructure such as fixing mudholes, constructing fences, corrals, trails or gates, range seeding, and improving access to water sources for livestock.

The file number refers to the number assigned by the court registry rather than to the file's physical order in the box. Each year, the numbering system restarted from 1 and ascended chronologically. Thus, it is possible to have multiple files with the same number in a box, as they date from different years.

Cranbrook Supreme and County Court civil orders

Series consists of civil orders from both the Supreme and County Courts of Cranbrook for 1955-1999. Civil orders represent the formal expression of the ruling of the court. Records relate to a variety of civil matters including divorces, bankruptcies, foreclosures, and some adoptions.

Records from the Supreme and County levels were interfiled together and are arranged by volume and folio number. Records of varying types have been interfiled, except when probate orders were separated into their own files between 1973-1974.

Grace Leighton interview

CALL NUMBER: T3986:0082 RECORDED: Kimberley (B.C.), 1982-06-08 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Grace went to school in Cranbrook. She worked in a bakery and a grocery store, and then as a telephone operator. She worked for BC Tel from 1945 to 1975. Her husband died in 1955, but she eventually remarried. [TRACK 2: blank.]

Cranbrook Supreme Court divorce orders

Series consists of original decrees nisi, decrees absolute, divorce orders, and judgements created between 1972 and 1979 by the Cranbrook Supreme Court. Also includes 1969-1975 monthly lists of returned certified copies of decrees from the Cranbrook Court Registry and acknowledgements of the returns by Vital Statistics. Between 1968 and 1985, a judgement by way of decree nisi required a three-month waiting period before a judgement by way of decree absolute could be applied for. During this time, a divorce was not legally in effect without a decree absolute.

Initially, orders, decrees nisi, and decrees absolute are filed together and arranged by case file number, not by volume and folio or by date. This means that records of varying dates are interfiled. Beginning 1 October 1975, records were separated and arranged by volume and folio numbers. As such, cases started but not completed before 30 September 1975 may be found under a case file number, volume and folio numbers, or by both. The records were scheduled for full retention under Court Services ORCS (schedule 100152) 51440-25.

Cranbrook Supreme Court Letters of administration and letters probate

The series consists of letters of administration and letters probate from Fort Steele, 1906-1909 and from the Supreme Court of Cranbrook, 1906-1978. It includes Form A, Form B, and Form C, each arranged by date of filing. Form A are grants of letters probate in which the deceased individual named the executor of their estate in their will. Form B are grants of letters of administration in which the deceased left a will but named no executor, or the executor was unable to fill the role, so another individual is named. Form C are grants of letters of administration in which the deceased left no will (died intestate), so an individual is named as executor.

Cranbrook County Court orders and default judgements

Series consists of civil default judgements (1971-1975) and civil and criminal orders (1973-1975) created by the Cranbrook County Court registry. Orders are the formal expression of the ruling of the court. Default judgments are ordered when one party has failed to file and serve a response to a claim within an allowed time period. A plaintiff can also apply for a default judgment if the defendant has withdrawn the response to a civil claim. Orders mainly deal with civil matters but also include some criminal matters, particularly for 1974-1975.

Default judgements and orders are filed separately. Records are arranged by case file (or action) number. The records were scheduled for full retention under Court Services ORCS (schedule 100152) 51100-30.
