One cyclist : a portrait

Allan D. Taylor film collection

The collection consists of video copies of 36 film items from the Allan D. Taylor collection held by Library and Archives Canada. These selected items (mainly newsreel footage and out-takes) depict British Columbia events, leisure activities, scenery and cityscapes in Victoria and Vancouver, on Vancouver Island, or in the Interior (for example, Kamloops and Lillooet), during the period 1907-1931. Several items filmed during World War One show events related to the war, including the departures of various military units for the conflict. The collection includes at least one item fillmed by Vancouver filmmaker A.D. "Cowboy" Kean, and a few others that are attributed to him.

The tides of war : the story of Japanese-Canadians in World War II

The item is a documentary video from 1977 about the treatment of Japanese-Canadians in British Columbia during World War II. Includes film footage shot at the time by Rev. Canon G.G. Nakayama (footage now at Public Archives in Canada) and interviews with Ken Adachi, David Suzuki, Rev. Canon Nakayama, Howard Green, and many other witnesses to the period. Modern location footage includes Vancouver and Slocan City. The October Crisis of 1970 is discussed as another application of the War Measures Act.

Images B.C. : a cultural history of British Columbia

The item is a video copy of a documentary. In it, art historian Marc Pessin examines the human history of British Columbia as reflected in the art forms of sculpture, painting and architecture, including images created by the First Peoples and by artists in the European tradition.

Frontier busters

The item is a video copy of a promotional film. It depicts mines and mineral resources in the North -- Alaska, Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories and northern B.C. -- and the role played by the White Pass and Yukon Route. The White Pass container ship "Frank M. Brown" leaves Vancouver and sails to Skagway, where its cargo is unloaded through modern technology. The freight is shipped by rail to Whitehorse, where it is transferred to trucks for transport to various mining operations. Mining of asbestos (Cassiar), copper (Whitehorse), silver-lead-zinc (Mayo), tungsten and lead (Ross River), and iron (Snake River). White Pass's involvement: efficient tranportation, integrated equipment, and increased freight tonnages.

Take four giant steps

The item is a video copy of an industrial film. It depicts the steps taken to transport 3,000 tons of oil search equipment from Vancouver to Bell River in the northern Yukon, where three companies -- Amerada, Marathon and Hudson's Bay -- combined to drill a well. BC footage includes White Pass and Yukon steamer going up the coast, and White Pass and Yukon Route from Skagway to Whitehorse.

Tuum est : excerpt

The item is a video copy of news reel items. This excerpt from the 1951 version of Tuum est [not to be confused with the 1958 Parry Films production of the same name] is mainly composed of footage shot by B.C. film pioneer A.D. Kean. However, most of the inter-titles in this excerpt are from the 1951 film. The archival footage depicts the first UBC convocation (May 4, 1916) and activities of UBC's contingent of the Western Universities Battalion, 196th Battalion, C.E.F. (1916-1917).

Madeleine is . . .

The item is a video copy of a feature film by Sylvia Spring. "The film follows the story of Madeleine (Nicola Lipman), a young French Canadian woman living in Vancouver. Caught between her domineering boyfriend Toro (John Juliani), with his socialist poser friends, and a patronizing employer, Madeleine must break free to assert control over her sexuality and creative desires. Heightened by Doug McKay's quasi-documentary camera style, Spring conveys a strong social vision in her portrayal of Vancouver on the cusp of the 1970s." (Diane Burgess, Vancouver International Film Festival, 2002).

Remembrance Day compilation

The item is a compilation video made by the Royal BC Museum using clips from archival newsreel and amateur footage. It shows mobilization and wartime scenes in Victoria and Vancouver during World War One (clips 1-5) and World War Two (clips 6-10). The Second World War material also includes civil defence activities in Vancouver, and Girl Guides collecting salvage for the war effort.
