Bridge River

The item is a composite print of an industrial film made between ca. 1945 and 1948. It shows the first phase of the Bridge River Project including construction of the Bridge River diversion dam, Seton Lake powerhouse, penstock on Mission Mountain, and power transmission lines to Vancouver; site preparation for La Joie storage dam and opening of first phase on 23 October 1948. There is also footage of Vancouver and vicinity emphasizing demand for electrical power.

Coronation day

The item is a documentary film made in 1952. It shows BC-related activities in London England leading up to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, including the laying of a wreath on the grave of Capt. George Vancouver and Lt.-Gov. Clarence Wallace planting a dogwood tree in the same churchyard. The film begins and ends with BC footage showing highlights of the 1951 Royal Visit of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh. There is also a brief sequence showing decorations and activities in Victoria and Vancouver to mark the coronation.

Vancouver diamond jubilee

The item is a composite print of a promotional film made in 1947. It shows the celebrations marking Vancouver's 60th anniversary to provide a framework for a short history and description of the city. Jubilee events include parades, a pageant at Timber Bowl in Stanley Park, First Nations dancing and the induction of the Governor-General (Viscount Alexander) as an honorary Kwakiutl chief. There are historical photographs which show Vancouver's early development.

Contemporary footage reveals various aspects of the city: skyline, public buildings and street scenes including Marine Building, harbour and shipyards, False Creek CPR yards and roundhouse, Lion's Gate and Burrard bridges, Vancouver airport, bus and streetcar systems, Police and Fire departments, Kitsilano Beach, Stanley Park, Bowen Island, boating, sailing, Sun Salmon Derby etc. It also includes footage of regional industries: logging, mining, smelting, fishing, farming, hydro-electric sites.

The item is a newsreel compilation on black and white film print. It contains an historical compilation of international news items: Admiral Byrd flies over North Pole 1926, 1922 personalities, the luxury liner "Normandie" 1935-42, the "Hindenburg" explodes 1937, 1917 fashions, famous stars portray Shakespearean characters, and 1929 sports. It also contains BC material spliced into the print: 1951 "BC welcomes Royal visitors", showing Princess Elizabeth and Prince Phillip in Vancouver; and 1952 "BC Electric opens Wahleach generating station", showing construction at Wahleach.

Heritage theatre : In 1931 there were jungles in Vancouver

SUMMARY: "Heritage Theatre" was a series of short historical plays set in the Vancouver environs. These vignettes illustrate some of the significant events and interesting episodes from Vancouver's earliest times. First broadcast in 1977, the plays were made in co-operation with the Social Planning Department of the City of Vancouver. This series was broadcast during the summer of 1981. This episode, "In 1931 There Were Jungles In Vancouver" by Brenda White, is a story of the Depression.

CJOR was one of Vancouver's premier radio stations from 1926, when it first went on the air, to its last days in 1988. For over a decade it was the Pacific Coast's CBC Dominion Network outlet and originated many music and variety programs to the network. The audio tapes in T4367 were donated by CJOR in January 1989 when the B.C. Archives expressed its interest in preserving examples of CJOR's talk radio format before its conversion to a classic rock station with the call letters CHRX.

SUMMARY: "Heritage Theatre" was a series of short historical plays set in the Vancouver environs. These vignettes illustrate some of the significant events and interesting episodes from Vancouver's earliest ti;mes. The second file, which is uncoded, concerns the transfer of records to Victoria from the Supervisor of Scaler's office.

The series consists of a typescript copy of "Donated Surplus: Being a Series of Autobiographical Essays". They are reminiscences of Clive Cornish's boyhood in Vancouver, school days at Vernon Preparatory School (1920-1922), and early career as bank junior and clerk in salmon exporting house. Also contains sketch of his later career as chartered accountant and freelance writer. Includes memoir and autobiographical manuscript of the his father, Edgar Osman Cornish, a prominent salmon canneries exporter and commission agent.
