The collection consists of video copies of 36 film items from the Allan D. Taylor collection held by Library and Archives Canada. These selected items (mainly newsreel footage and out-takes) depict British Columbia events, leisure activities, scenery and cityscapes in Victoria and Vancouver, on Vancouver Island, or in the Interior (for example, Kamloops and Lillooet), during the period 1907-1931. Several items filmed during World War One show events related to the war, including the departures of various military units for the conflict. The collection includes at least one item fillmed by Vancouver filmmaker A.D. "Cowboy" Kean, and a few others that are attributed to him.

Series consists of "blue books" containing a compilation of statistical information, public accounts and general information about the Colony of Vancouver Island. Each volume includes a table of contents and includes the following sections: 1) Taxes, duties and other sources of revenue 2) Fees 3) Revenue and expenditure 4) Comparative yearly statements of revenue and expenditure 5) Local revenue 6) public debt 7) Military expenditure: militia 8) Public works 9) Legislation: laws, proclamations, etc. 10) Political Franchise 11) Council and assembly 12) Civil establishment 13) Officer who have given security for discharge of their duties 14) Pensions 15) Abstract of expenditure for civil, judicial, ecclesiastical establishments, etc. 16) Foreign consuls 17) Population 18) Savings banks, friendly societies, immigrants and emigrants, etc. 19) Ecclesiastical return 20) Education, newspapers and reviews 21) Coins exchanges, etc. 22) Imports and exports 23) Shipping 24) Agriculture, cultivated and uncultivated lands, wages, etc. 25) Manufactures, mines and fisheries 26) Grants of land 27) Gaols and Prisoners 28) Charitable and literary institutions.

The series also consists of 11 pages which may be draft copies of several parts of the 1863 blue book.

Vancouver Island: Entry Books of Correspondence, 1849-1867, (C.O. 410, vols. 1-2). This unit consists of letter-book copies of despatches from the Secretary of State for the Colonies (i.e. the Colonial .Secretary) to the governors of Vancouver Island. Subject indexes appear at the end of the volumes. Original duplicate copies of these records are catalogued as C/AA/10.2/1. Other copies, but of inferior quality, may be found on microfilm reel B00004 (1).

This series consists of transcripts of correspondence with the Hudson's Bay Company relating to the conveyance, settlement, and reconveyance of Vancouver Island. Correspondence is arranged chronologically.

This series consists of records of the federal government's Commission on Claims of Settlers in the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway Belt, 1897. Records include the report of Commissioner T.G. Rothwell and transcripts of evidence.

The series consists of copies of correspondence, chiefly from Alexander Begg (b.1825) [British Columbia Emigration Commissioner] to the Marquis of Lothian [Secretary of State for Scotland], concerning proposed Crofter settlement on Vancouver Island. There is additional correspondence from J.H. Turner [B.C. Minister of Finance] to Chancellor of the Exchequer, along with appeals from Highland crofters interested in the settlement. The series also includes documents from the government of British Columbia and the United Kingdom re financing the settlement, British Columbia government emigration pamphlets, and tracts from the British Columbia Development Company and the Vancouver Island Development Syndicate.

There are also documents and provincial government bills dealing with the establishment of deep sea fisheries, plus newspaper clippings, parliamentary reports, and Pacific Coast Steamship Company brochures.

Series consists of Colonial Office correspondence relating to the Colony of Vancouver Island. Correspondence is arranged chronologically in bound volumes.

The item is a video cassette containing five newsreel items. There is a wide assortment of footage, much of it shot in the Victoria area. Highlights include: cars on Malahat; Victoria harbour; Empress Hotel; Government House; Lt.-Gov. Prior; Beacon Hill Park; Hatley Park; Fletcher Bros. music store; boxing; Gorge Sports Day; Colwood Golf Course; sulky racing, Vancouver; Butchart and other gardens; sealing fleet; panoramic views of Victoria; Legislative Buildings; Sooke pipeline; military sports day; motorcycle racing; canoe races; tug-o'-war; ship "Princess Louise"; John Oliver inspecting Navy League; visit of Gov.-Gen. Lord and Lady Byng; Hardy Bay; Willows Sports Day; garden party; Ladysmith coal bunkers; children's garden party; water sports, including high diving.

The item is a video copy of out-takes. Promoting Victoria as "a little bit of Old England", this footage was shot for Universal's "Going Places" travel series with the co-operation of the National Film Board's John Grierson. The outs include shots of: Legislature at night and arrival of dignitaries; sequence on Canadian Scottish Regiment at church parade at Work Point Barracks; University School [St. Michael's boys school] rugby game; girls' school; library reading room; golfers playing at Oak Bay golf course while Empress steamers pass in background; Craigflower School?; dinner at Royal Oak Inn; Nanaimo Bastion; sequence on girls' drill team performing on lawn behind Legislature with Kinsmen Boys Band; Cowichan Indians making sweaters and carving totems and work on display at Koksilah Trading Post, Duncan; also footage of salmon fishing and logging.

The item is an industrial film. A young man who is skeptical about the future of the forest industry is taken to see various plants and operations. Illustrates the processes used and the diversity of wood products. Most of the film depicts MacMillan & Bloedel's Harmac plant and logging operations on Vancouver Island. There are also brief sequences aboard a ferry from Vancouver to the island.
