[Day of Protest -- #2]

News item. Nanaimo contingent of about 1,200 demonstrators in a main street cavalcade and at Nanaimo city park. One speaker says: "It's not Big Labour here today. It's Lillian from the college, Jim from Harmac, it's my neighbour who works at the Free Press. The Free Press that you pick up in your hands today will be hot, so drop it, because the union workers are out."

[Island connection]

News footage. An (uncompleted?) TV news feature examining the pros and cons of a proposed fixed link between Vancouver Island and the Mainland. Includes interviews with Vancouver Island residents who support or oppose the plan. Includes footage of Victoria and other Vancouver Island communities; Strait of Georgia ferries (including jetfoils); and interview with Sam Bawlf, Mel Couvelier, Nanaimo mayor Frank Ney, Dr. Patrick McGeer, and others.

[Malaspina College]

News item. Malaspina College scheduled to open in September, 1976. Some good shots of campus construction and the area around college in the Nanaimo area.

[Nanaimo Harbour]

News item. The Norwegian freighter "Ringstad," on charter to MacMillan Bloedel, loads pulp and paper in Port Alberni and lumber in Nanaimo and Crofton for the European market. Excellent footage of loading facilities in Nanaimo. MacBlo spokesman talks about lack of space to load big freighters, and the plans to develop a consolidated forest products terminal at Nanaimo dock for improved efficiency.

[Nanaimo's Prince George]

News item. Interior and exterior shots of the S.S. "Prince George". Before a refit can even be considered, the debt on the ship -- now over $600,000 -- must be greatly reduced. This is not possible when no revenue is coming in. Neither Nanaimo nor Ladysmith now seem to want to buy the ship. NDP MLA Dave Stupich says the vessel could be developed into an excellent facility and tourist attraction for Nanaimo.

[NDP MLA Dave Stupich]

News item. In an interview in his Nanimo riding, NDP MLA Dave Stupich comments on the abandonment of the CP Ferry route during the winter months. He also discusses the agricultural land reserve loss. He says that the BC Land Commission people made their stand clear right from the beginning. Despite Social Credit promises to eliminate or reduce the power of the Land Commission Act when re-elected, there have been no changes in the Act to date.

[Protection Island]

Television stock shots. Footage of Protection Island [presumably the one adjacent to Nanaimo], including Les Mottishaw [?]; residents walking [?]; scenery.
