Manson's store (Nanaimo) records

The series consists of Manson's store records including ledgers, 1885-1940; daily records of sales, 1912-1919; 1947-1955, and records including lists of goods supplied in account with Dept. of Indian Affairs, 1954-1956.

The series also includes minute books from the Nanaimo and Cedar Farmers' Institute, 1916-1923.

St. Ann's Convent and School (Nanaimo) records

Series consists of records created during the course of establishing, administering and closing St. Ann's Convent and School in Nanaimo, which was constructed in 1877 and closed in 1966.

Records consist of chronicles, official visitation reports, inventories, financial accounts, council minutes, histories of the school, student registers and accounts, grades and exam results, attendance reports, curriculum, meeting minutes, and photographs. Included are photographs of former students, ranging to 2007.

The series is arranged into four subseries: A. Convent subseries; B. School suberies; C. Commercial High School and Business College subseries; D. Photographs subseries.

Series consists of a Nanaimo coroner's office record book for 1866-1905. Inquest (inquisition) entries can include: name of the deceased, cause of death, date of death, date of inquest, name of the coroner, names of the jurors, and the name of the medical officer. Accidental or unusual deaths, some of which may have been the subject of inquiries, are also listed. There is also a loose list of accidental deaths in the Nanaimo district prior to 1866.

Diocese of Victoria records

Series consists of records created by or relating to activities of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Victoria.

When the Sisters of St. Ann arrived on Lekwungen territories in 1858, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Victoria had already existed for twelve years, initially called the Diocese of Vancouver Island. The Congregation of The Sisters of Saint Ann has operated alongside the Diocese and Bishop of Victoria since their arrival.

Records in this series relate to the Sisters being a congregation within the Diocese, and working within schools and parishes governed by the Diocese. Newsletters, reports, correspondence and programs from the Diocese contributed to SSA policy and decision making and also informed the Sisters of the activities of the broader community. Material in the series includes histories of the Diocese, reports, correspondence, centennial celebrations, newsletters, directories, committee records, minutes for St. Ann's Sewing Society, records of pastoral ministries, photographs, and a sound recording.

Nanaimo Supreme Court reports and presentment of the Grand Jury

Series consists of Nanaimo Supreme Court reports and presentment of the Grand Jury for an October 1900 fall assize and 1904 and 1910 spring assizes. Included are reports on conditions of the hospital, court house, schools, opera house, theatre, provincial jail, and city jail. They also address the fees for jurors, the need to enforce the Speed Law with regard to automobiles, the system for train dispatching and signalling, and the need for an enquiry into the ease of procuring liquor by Indigenous peoples.

Prefect of Studies records

The series consists of records created or retained by the office of the Prefect of Studies for the Sisters of St. Ann, a role that was established in 1890 to facilitate the organization and placement of teachers and to supervise all educational aspects of the schools. The role was also responsible for the Sisters' post secondary education and professional development, both religious and academic.

The Prefect of Studies maintained the records of her office alongside inactive school records routinely sent for permanent retention from each of the schools with the exception of Indian Residential Schools, which would usually be considered federal government records.

Included in this series are records of students, which appear in multiple formats and can include exam results and permanent school record cards. Schools represented in these records include: St. Ann's Academy Victoria, St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, St. Ann’s Academy Duncan, St. Ann’s Academy Nanaimo, St. Ann’s Academy Kamloops, Kuper Island Residential School, Holy Angels School Victoria, St. Ann’s Academy New Westminster, St. Mary’s Residential School in Mission, St. Augustine’s School Vancouver, Little Flower Academy, Immaculate Conception School Vancouver, St. Joseph’s School Penticton, Kamloops Indian Residential School, St. James School Vernon, Sacred Heart School Dawson, Lower Post Residential School, St. Ann’s Academy Juneau, Copper Valley School, Smith Memorial School, St Patrick’s School New Westminster, Holy Ghost School in Queensboro, and St. Catherine’s Day School in Duncan. Not all records of students were retained by the SSA.

Nanaimo New Democratic Riding Association fonds

The fonds consists of videotapes of New Democratic Party events, mainly in Nanaimo. It includes speeches by Tommy Douglas (as well as a 1976 tribute to Tommy and Irma Douglas), Dave Barrett (including a 1976 convention speech), Les Benjamin and David Stupich.

Additional NDP events are documented on 1/2-inch open reel videotapes, including a dinner speech by Dave Barrett during the 1975 election campaign, and speeches by David Stupich and Tommy Douglas. If these reels are intact, they will have to be digitized before their content can be made accessible.

The item consists of two reels (one main reel and one duplicate reel) of unedited negative footage of Premier W.A.C. Bennett on an election tour of B.C. during the provincial election campaign, September 1963. Bennett is shown making speeches, riding PGE trains, shaking hands and generally "campaigning" in North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Vancouver, Quesnel, Williams Lake, Dawson Creek, Peace River dam site, Fort St. John, Prince George and Nanaimo. Highlights include Bennett setting off a large explosion at the dam site and touring the mills and roads.
