Series consists of one chronological record book from the Nanaimo coroner's office, 1866-1905, recording inquests and showing the name of the deceased; cause of death; date of death; date of inquest; name of the coroner; names of the jurors; and the name of the medical officer. Accidental or unusual deaths, some of which may have been the subject of inquiries, are also listed. There is also a loose list of accidental deaths in Nanaimo district prior to 1866.

Nanaimo Supreme Court Registrar's assize record books

The series consists of two registrar's assize record books. One dates from December 1882 to July 1884, and the second dates from 1887 to possibly 1888. The first volume was kept by the registrar (Marshall Bray) and served as a minute book, bench book and record book. It includes several Petit and Grand Jury lists. The second volume was not kept by Bray, but was presumably kept either by his successor or another courts employee working in a similar capacity.

Both volumes include a great deal of witness statements concerning particular cases. Many of the cases deal with Chinese or Indigenous residents of Nanaimo and the surrounding area. The statements are frequently lengthy and often appear to have been recorded verbatim. There are notes regarding translations.

Archibald McKinlay Diary Part 1

File consists of one diary of Archibald McKinlay, the first of two. The diary spans November 3, 1876 to February 9, 1877 and documents McKinlay's travels to reserves as reserve commissioner and includes copies of correspondence, basic census information for Indigenous communities, and translations of Indigenous languages.

Vancouver Island Supreme Court of Civil Justice bench book

Series consists of one bench book for Colony of Vancouver Island Supreme Court of Civil Justice civil and criminal cases heard by Judge David Cameron at Fort Victoria from November 1853 to January 1856 and one criminal case at Nanaimo in May 1854. It also includes civil cases heard at Victoria in the Inferior Court of Civil Justice in 1856. The volume additionally served as a criminal record book for 1853, a cause book for 1856, and a Registrar's record book for 1853. It opens with a notation that Judge Cameron's commission was read and that he took his seat on 6 October 1853. The Registrar also notes that he received the court seal from Judge Cameron.

The fonds consists of the wastebook [accounts book] of Fort Nanaimo, 1854-1861,reflecting the various activities of the HBC in the Nanaimo area. It also includes a transcript copy of Fort Nanaimo correspondence between Joseph W. McKay and James Dougas, 1852 to 1853, and a transcript copy of the Fort Nanaimo journal, 1855 to 1857.

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-06-20 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mrs. Annie McLeod, wife of George McLeod, describes her arrival in Nanaimo in the ship "Maude"; mining on Texada Island; her father James Raper and the Cornell Mine in 1898; and a description; of Marble Bay, Van Anda in 1900. She then offers her impressions of her father; Van Anda, including the church and opera house; the Columbia Coast Mission and Hospital; and copper mining. She describes her arrival at Vananda; union steamships; Van Anda company town life; Gilles Bay; the 1913 "Cheslakee" shipwreck; the origin of the Van Anda name, involving Harry Whitney Treat; the town's decline in 1921 and the re-growth after WWII with new mining prospects; the influence of Treat; and comments on Van Anda in the past and present. Ethel Cadorin and Katri Riksman interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1967-01-22 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mrs. A (Ethel) Cadorin acts as a translator for her mother, Katri Riksman, who recalls the Finnish community of Sointula on Malcolm Island. Mrs. Riksman describes her father, Matti Riksman, ;and the beginnings of the Sointula community; earlier settlements in Nanaimo, Hoquiam and Australia. Then she discusses the ideals of Sointula and Kaleuan Kansa; her own impressions upon arrival in Sointula in 1902; the fire of 1903 and its consequences; and the breakdown of Sointula.
