Documentary. "The Columbia Coast Mission boat making its rounds near Alert Bay, Vancouver Island. A number of small settlements, with fishboats, are seen in the distance. They are visited, then left. Bones Bay is visited. Shots of fishermen working on wharf outside Bones Bay Cannery. Village Island is visited, as is Mrs. Kathleen O'Brien, M.B.E., who lives on the Reserve and works for the Anglican Church. Shots of the church and the main street. Logging show with steam donkey. Scenes of logs being felled, yarded with a spar tree and donkey, and loaded onto rail cars pulled by small diesel locomotive. Logs being delivered to a long pier and dumped into salt-chuck. Ship, the 'Venture', at the end of the wharf, and leaving. Burial at sea, performed on the Mission boat with flag at half-mast and with red ensign covering body. Families up the coast living on floats in sheltered bays while the men are away logging. Kids going to school on motor launch. A long caption details how accidents are reported to the hospital ship 'Columbia' from an isolated logging camp via the Dominion Government Radio Station at Alert Bay, and how the boat is despatched immediately to lend assistance. The exact story concerns a picnic during which a young boy hurts his foot badly. Probably the whole episode was dramatized, but only the opening sequences remain: the wounded boy in a launch with his family, a man running along rails to a logging camp where he makes use of the radio telephone, a man in Alert Bay on the other end sending an alert out to the 'Columbia'." Documentary. The changing way of life of Canada's Indian population is illustrated through a look at the varying roles and occupations of Indian people across Canada. Kwakiutl chief James Sewid of the Nimpkish band is shown at Alert Bay and on his fishing boat, the "Twin Sisters".

Docudrama. Follows the Columbia Coast Mission hospital ship "Columbia" on a routine patrol of isolated settlements on the islands, channels and inlets between Vancouver Island and the mainland. Footage of interest: Kingcome village views, Kwakiutl dance ceremony there and Indian children at an outdoor hymn sing; logging operations and floating logging camp. Mission superintendent Canon Alan D. Greene appears throughout.

Following part of a thank-you speech and cake-cutting by Barney Williams (celebrating his 84th birthday), the main content is a lengthy humorous speech by Willard Ireland on "How B.C. SUMMARY: "Saturday Evening" was a series of 1.5 hour programs broadcast from 8:30 to 10:00 PM on Saturday nights. The series ran from October 1962 to the spring of 1967. Usually in two parts, the programs feat;ured plays, classical concerts, documentaries and talks. This episode, "Hamatsa", features a recorded performance of the Kwakiutl Hamatsa or Cannibal Dance. In June 1965, CBC Radio visited Alert Bay, ;where the family of James Knox of Fort Rupert presented the Hamatsa dance-drama, the first time that this dance has been recorded for public broadcast. The program also dramatizes the story behind the; dance and the myth of the Supernatural Cannibal. The voices of actors Walter Marsh, Robert Clothier, Daphne Goldrick and Lee Taylor are heard.;

RECORDED: Alert Bay (B.C.), 1968-05-12 SUMMARY: The first part of the tape comprises an interview with James Sewid, Hereditary Chief and Chief Councilor at Alert Bay. He speaks about the potlatch, the trials, the sentencing, and the imprisonment at; Oakalla. The confiscated regalia was sent to a museum in Ottawa. There are presently [1968] three bands who are requesting to have their regalia returned: Village Island (Nimpkish), Alert Bay and Cap;e Mudge. The second part of the tape (14:00) is an interview with Henry Bell aboard his boat "Porlier Pass" in Alert Bay. He speaks of his family and his inheritance of songs and dances that he had gi;ven to Dan Cranmer for the potlatch at Village Bay. This was the famous potlatch that resulted in the arrests and trials in the 1920s. Henry Bell describes the Potlatch, the types of gifts that were p;resented, the duration of the event, and the arrests at Village Bay.;
