Assize record books.

The series consists of several cause books for bankruptcy created in the Supreme Court of Vernon between 1921 and 1980. The cause books cover the Interior Region of BC, including Vernon, Penticton, Kelowna, and Kamloops. The cause book for the period 1921 to 1973 has been microfilmed, but the corresponding index is available in the original book format only. Page 1 of the 1921-1973 cause book has a note signed by G. Hunter, C.J.B.C., dated 12 April 1921 appointing Leonard Norris as Registrar in Bankruptcy for Vernon. The volume functions as a cause book for the Bankruptcy Court of British Columbia and the Bankruptcy Court of Canada for 1921-1923. In 1923 the entries read "In the Supreme Court of British Columbia - In Bankruptcy."

Indexes are not available for the period 1973 to 1980. The index covering the period 1921 to 1973 lists the name of the party and the corresponding page in the cause book. Typical cause book entries list the plaintiff(s) and defendant(s), as well as a list of proceedings in the bankruptcy case. Entries are arranged chronologically.

This series consists of the records of the Commission to Enquire Into the Economic Conditions in the Several Areas under Irrigation Projects from 1927. The enquiry examined the following areas: Glenmore Irrigation District, Grand Forks I.D., Heffley Creek I.D., Naramata I.D., Peachland I.D., Rutland I.D., Scotty Creek Development District, South East Kelowna I.D., Vernon I.D., West Summerland, Westbank I.D., and Winfield. The records include 4 volumes of submissions to the commission, two copies of the Commission's final report, and 1 volume of exhibits.

The series consists of records relating to school and community drama created by the Dept. of Education. It includes copies of theatre programmes from communities throughout the province from 1933 to 1939; correspondence regarding the 5th Annual BC Drama Finals in Vernon, 1957; and a British Columbia Drama Association cashbook dated 1932 to 1955.

This series consists of Water Rights Branch file No. 011704 of correspondence, including the commissioners' report, regarding the Commission of inquiry under section 171 of the Water Act (1914) to investigate irrigation matters in the vicinity of Vernon involving the White Valley Irrigation Company and Coldstream Estate Company.

Assize record books for criminal cases.

This series contains a notebook of data recorded during a fruit tree experimental pruning project conducted in the vicinity of Vernon. The notebook includes photographs affixed to the pages. The notebook is believed to have originated from the Horticulture branch of the Department of Agriculture.

This series includes records related to forest tenures in the Kamloops Forest Region from 1987-1998. The series currently includes records from the Kamloops Forest District, Penticton Forest District and Vernon Forest District within the larger Kamloops Forest Region.

Types of forest tenure records in this series include non-replaceable timber sale licences (TSLs), including licences issued under the Small Business Forest Enterprise (SBFEP) program and BC Timber Sales Program.

Records regard the issuance, evaluation, administration, monitoring, planning, replacement, cancellation and extension of forest tenures under the Forest Act.

Records include correspondence; licences; logging plans; log hauling and harvesting contracts; preharvest silviculture prescriptions, reviews and amendments; harvest inspection reports and appraisals; stumpage calculations; records related to right of ways and Forest Service Road permits; reports; maps; and photos.

The series also includes legal documents for cutting permits for replaceable forest licences and tree farm licence (TFL) 35. These files may include some of the records described above, but primarily contain records related to silviculture prescriptions and surveys.

The records have been classified as 19500-45 and 19620-25 in the Forestry Operational Classification System (ORCS).

The series consists of ledgers of woodsmen’s and mechanic’s liens registered in the Vernon county court between 1890 and 1949. No index is available for the woodsmen’s liens, and only a partial index is available for the mechanics’ liens. Typical entries include information on the name and place of residence of claimants, as well as a description of the material in question, the dates that work took place, the amount claimed, and the name of the individual against whom the claim is lodged.

Mechanics’ liens were issued in accordance with the Mechanics’ Lien Act, 1891 (c. 23 SBC 1891). The act enabled labourers, sub-contractors, and contractors to claim a lien for the value of the work. Woodsmen’s liens were issued in accordance with the “Woodmen’s Lien for Wages Act” (c. 58, SBC 1895).

The series consists of approximately 5250 black and white photographic negatives taken by Mental Health Services between 1948 and 1967. The negatives are acetate and are mostly in a 4 x 5 format with some 35 mm. There are 62 black and white prints interfiled with the negatives.

The photographs are of various British Columbia mental health institutions including the Boys Industrial School, Colony Farm, Colquitz Mental Home (Saanich), the Home for the Aged in Vernon and in Terrace, Woodlands School, Essondale (Coquitlam) and the Crease Clinic.

The photographs depict the grounds and buildings (both internal and external views) of the mental health institutions as well as photographs of construction and equipment. There are photographs of staff and patients involved in a variety of activities including medical treatments, events, ceremonies, leisure activities and other programs.

The negative files are arranged numerically in seven boxes: 1-657, 658-1004, 1005-1135, 1136-1242, 1245-1325, 1326-1409 and 1410-1499.

This series consists of various records transferred from the Vernon Government Agent's office. Many of the records were created by predecessor Government Agents who worked in Yale, Osoyoos or other parts of the Okanagan District before an Agent was stationed in Vernon. The majority of the records are tax assessment rolls for the Okanagan District from 1880-1884. Other records include applications for the sale of unsurveyed land and pre-emption records; reference material likely from the sessional papers, including bills; cofferdam contract; and a statement of collectors of revenue; and an indexed register of collected taxes.

Information and complaints the majority of which were taken and sworn before William Morley. Juvenile records (GR-2769) have been removed from this series and are filed separately. Includes Coldstream, Falkland, Salmon Arm, and Sicamous.

This series consists of a variety of records created by various provincial mental health institutions from 1872 to 2008. Records relate to the administration and operation of Riverview Hospital and related mental health facilities at the Essondale site in Coquitlam, as well as other facilities across the province. These mental health institutions include: Victoria Asylum, New Westminster Provincial Asylum (later Public Hospital for the Insane or Provincial Hospital for the Insane), Home for the Aged Coquitlam (later Valleyview), Home for the Aged Terrace (later Skeenaview), Home for the Aged Vernon (later Dellview), Crease Clinic, Colony Farm, Colquitz, Woodlands School, Tranquille and other medical facilities.

The names and administrative structure of these institutions changed over time. Mental health functions were originally part of the Provincial Secretary’s mandate; they were transferred to Mental Health Services when it was created in 1950.

These government records were collected by the Riverview Historical Society and include a wide variety of subject matter and media. This includes subjects such as: early development of the Essondale lands and Colony Farm; the construction and expansion of the facility; admissions, transfers, and discharges of patients; administration of patient care; administration of therapy programs; patient and staff recreation; staff and nurse training; operation of the audiovisual department; library services; research into new medical and therapeutic practices; research by staff regarding mental health practices at Riverview and further afield; community involvement; volunteer activity; policy development; the redevelopment of the Riverview lands; general administration; and, administration of other services at the site such as postal, food, laundry, banking, transportation and safety services.

Sheriff's record book for the Vernon Court Registry, 1897, 1913-1915.

This series consists of Forest Branch timber investigations and inspections files, 1913-1915. Records include correspondence and reports from Nelson, Prince Rupert, Vancouver and Vernon Forest Districts. Includes file on early logging railroads, Vancouver Forest District.

Bankruptcy minute books of meetings of creditors held in Vernon, Kelowna, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Merritt and Penticton, 1923-1956.

The series consists of nine volumes of judges’ bench books from the Vernon County Court and the County Court of Yale holden at Vernon. The series includes both civil and criminal court cases and includes two 1934 volumes of the records of County Court Judge J.D. Swanson.

Chambers books. v. 1: October 1904 - 1907 and v. 2: 1908-1910.

The series consists of ledgers of conditional bills of sale for the Vernon area. A typical entry includes the names of both parties involved and a bill number. Most ledgers are indexed. Ledgers date from 1930 to 1953.

The series consists of nine volumes of firm declarations from the Vernon area. Unindexed ledgers are complete from 1898-1964. Indexes of firm names exist for the 1901-1950 time period, and indexes of individual names exist for 1922-1957. The series documents a wide variety of businesses, including general merchants, hotels, and metallurgists and assayers.

The series consists of grants of letters of administration created between 1892 and 1969 by the County Court of Vernon. The records typically provide information on the name of the deceased and their date and place of death, as well as the name and relationship of the appointed administrator.

Series consists of two indexes from the Vernon County Court. The location of indexed items is unknown, and items may not be in the custody of the BC Archives.

Indexes are arranged alphabetically by plaintant (vol. 1) and by defendant (vol. 2) and provide the number assigned to a case (i.e., 1/1944 to 74/1951).

The series consists of registers of naturalization indexes, as well as of one register of naturalization certificates, oaths of residence, and oaths of allegiance. The records were created and managed by the Vernon County Court between 1893 and 1973. Index registers typically provide applicants’ names, addresses, occupations, and nationalities, as well as the date of application filing, date of naturalization hearing, whether the application was approved or rejected, the date the papers and certificate were sent, the certificate number and any other remarks. Naturalization records 583 to 638 include multiple naturalization forms providing details of name, previous residence, current residence, occupation, and length of time spent residing in Canada.
