This series contains miscellaneous bills, paid and unpaid, and a statement of personal expenses for liquor and alcohol, by John Boles Gaggin of Quesnellemouth (modern day Quesnel).

The series consists of records created by the Government Agent and the Gold Commissioner of the Cariboo District, between 1860 and 1938. It includes correspondence inward and outward; court, mining, land, financial and administrative records.

This series contains the records of the Gold Commissioner, Government Agent, and Assistant Land Commissioner, Cariboo District (Quesnel). The records consist of lot registers, certificates of purchase, certificates of pre-emption, registers of pre-emptions (canceled and allowed), registers of land applications and lands purchased, register of leaves of absence granted pre-emption on active service, minute books containing lot register of lands along the route of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, and registers of hay and pasture land leases. The series also includes townsite registers for Quesnel, Barkerville, and Wells and lot registers for some townships in the Peace River Block. Volumes 89-98 and 153-158 are oversize.

This series consists of 11 volumes of records of the Assistant Commissioner of Lands and Works, Cariboo District, 1863-1893. Records include certificates of pre-emption, certificates of improvement, lot register of Group 1, Cariboo District, sale of town lots of Richfield, Barkerville, Cameronton, and Quesnellemouth, and certificates of purchase. Also contains water rights recorded for irrigation purposes and an accounts book.

This series consists of five volumes of Magistrate's record books from the Quesnel Provincial Court. Volumes are an account book, 30 Jun 1864 - 26 Sep 1865; charge book 24 Aug 1896 - 30 Jul 1902; charge book and notebook, 03 Sep 1918 - 09 Jul 1920; notebook, 30 Dec 1947 - 12 Apr 1950; and notebook, 18 Jun 1950 - 10 Oct 1950.

This series consists of a wide variety of records received or created by government officials in the Cariboo region from 1868 to 1915. Most of the records are addressed to government officials or were created by courts in the following places: Richfield, Barkerville, Quesnelle Forks and other locations in the Cariboo district. Over the years, the government offices responsible for the entire Cariboo district were located in each of these towns. The majority of the records appear to have been received by the Government Office, Richfield.

At this time government offices held a very wide range of responsibilities which could be done by as few as one person. The records relate to several government officials: the Gold Commissioner, Government Agent, Magistrate, County Court judge and Supreme Court judge.

The majority of the records are related to leasing, purchasing or gaining access to water for mining claims. This includes some records from the Gold Commissioner court.

There are also many county court and supreme court records. These records include summons; wills; probate and other estate records; search warrants; assizes; court transcripts; evidence; coroner inquest records; assize court calendars; sheriff records; and notes of the Board of Liquor Licence Commissioners approving renewal of liquor licences.

Other types of records include general correspondence from settlers; census data; voters lists; voter registration forms from Keithley Creek; criminal statistics; Land Ordinances; pre-emption records and other records related to the Land Act; naturalization oaths; indentures; receipts and financial records; maps; petitions for liquor licences; a BC Savings Bank (Cariboo Branch) depositors book; and a register of letters inward and outward for 1910-1915.

Miscellaneous court documents, civil and criminal, at all court levels. Includes summonses, exhibits, warrants, orders, affidavits and sheriff forms, from Barkerville, Quesnel, Soda Creek, Richfield and Lytton.

This series contains plaint and procedure books, 1864-1896. In addition to the County Court of Cariboo at Quesnel, also includes cases heard in the County Court of Cariboo at Soda Creek, Richfield, and 150 Mile House.

The series consists of 8 balance sheets covering the period May to December 1867 for the post office at Quesnelmouth, later known as Quesnel. The forms were signed by Frank Trevor, the local postmaster, and were forwarded for examination to A.T. Bushby, who was at that time acting postmaster in New Westminster. The forms show a variety of post office expenses, including stamps, registered letters, and newspapers.

The records were originally found in an accession of assorted colonial-era Cariboo records, including pre-emptions, gold commissioner files, partnership agreements and voters lists. The records were removed from this accession and later re-accessioned.

Criminal assize calendars for Victoria. Also includes criminal assize calendars for Yale, Nanaimo, New Westminster, Clinton, Richfield, Kamloops, Quesnellemouth, Cassiar, Laketon, Glenora and Lytton, 1870s.

This series consists of 8 volumes of birth, marriage, death and naturalization records from the Department of the Provincial Secretary from 1872-1913 for various parts of the province. The volumes are:

This series consists of Richfield Supreme Court proceedings, 1881-1904, and 1881-1911.

Series consists of Schedule B tax assessment rolls created by Government Agents or other government officials for the Cariboo District. There are rolls for Barkerville for the years 1888, 1890, and 1892 (two pages) and one roll for Quesnelle [Quesnel] for the year 1890. The records include names, occupation, numbers of livestock, lot information, and assessments for real property, wild land, personal property, and income taxes as well as dates of notice, total assessed taxes, and provincial revenue taxes.

Record book of cases heard at Lillooet, Soda Creek, Quesnel and Richfield, 1888-1894. The volume also contains Supreme Court cases, 1888-1892, and a case from the Kootenay County Court (Kimpton vs. Kirkpatrick), 1894.

The series consists of a Magistrate's record book for Quesnel, created between December 1892 and July 1896. The volume continues as Provincial Police (Quesnel) daily diary from August 1896 to May 1915. Back pages include the following: applications for gun licences; constable's account book; police court and gaol inventories; and mining claims, 1912. A second volume is a register of motor-vehicles licences in the Quesnel area, from 1922 to 1924, giving owner's name, description of vehicle, and licence, engine and serial numbers. The volume continues with lists of individuals receiving chauffeur's licences, 1922 to 1924; and the remainder is a daily diary for Provincial Police (Quesnel), from September 1931 to July 1934. The back of the book has a list of motor vehicle registrations for1921.

The series consists of indexes to partnerships registered in the County Court of Quesnel. The ledgers are arranged alphabetically and cover both firms and individuals. The whereabouts of the records to which the indexes refer is unknown. Typical entries in the firm index include the style of firm, names of persons composing the firm, and the date of declaration. Entries in the individual index consist of the name of individual, the style of firm of which a member, and the date of declaration.

Fonds consists of broad-ranging records pertaining to the management and operations of the Western Plywood Company Limited and the Weldwood-Westply Limited group of regional and national companies, subsidiaries, divisions and branches in Canada and the United States. Records in this fonds are from the British Columbia Head Office of Weldwood-Westply and include material to do with management and operations of various plants, particularly the Kent Avenue plywood plant in Vancouver, where the head office was located, and the Cariboo Plywood plant in Quesnel. The fonds includes records of the following companies, subsidiaries, divisions and branches: Alwest Wholesale, Canadian Collieries Resources Limited, Cariboo Pulp and Plywood (Quesnel), Empire Lumber Company, Hay & Company Limited and Hubbell Lumber Company (both Ontario), Flavelle Cedar Limited, J.R. The series consists of record books created by the Quesnel Police Court between 1911 and 1925. Volume 1: Feb 1911 - Jul 1919; Volume 2: Dec 1919 -Oct 1925.

The series consists of Mechanics' Liens and Woodmen's Liens from 1913-1915, 1920-1921, 1923-1926, 1931, 1933-1935, 1938, 1940-1953, 1942, 1945, 1953-1956. The register covering 1940-1953 includes an index.

The series consists of plaint and procedure books, some of which also have indexes. The volume in accession 75-G-021 includes a list of court documents and costs for the Supreme and County courts inside the front cover. The volume in container 830898-0003 includes the County Court judge's Criminal Court plaint book. This volume also includes a short list of mechanic's liens in the back of the volume.

Civil case files, with the exception of probate/estate files (GR-2245) Mechanics' liens (GR-2708) and Woodmen's liens (GR-2708) which have been filed separately.

Probate/estate files.

The series consists of one volume of the naturalization register created at the County Court of Quesnel. Records date to between 1914 and 1977. The ledger is arranged alphabetically and entries provide information on the full name of applicant, their occupation, former place of residence, current place of residence, the date notice and papers were filed, the date naturalization certificate was issued, the date it was delivered and to whom it was delivered. Places of residence include Quesnel, Cottonwood, Moose Heights, Wells, Hixon, Barkerville, and Van Winkle. The register also includes a “declaration of intent” list tucked into the front cover.

Civil case files with the exception of probate, divorce and adoption files which have been removed from this series and are filed separately. The case number appears with a number followed by a year (e.g. 3/1914).

The series consists of a prisoner's description book from Quesnel police gaol, created between July 1915 and May 1919.

The series consists of 19 volumes of letters of administration for the Quesnel area. The volumes were created by both the Supreme and County courts of Quesnel between 1915 and 1977. Typical entries include the name of the deceased and the place and date of death, as well as the names of those to whom letters of administration were granted and their relationship to the deceased. Some volumes in accession 83-1199 have a will annexed.

The series consists of cause books created by the Quesnel Supreme Court between 1915 and 1977. While the records are largely civil in nature, the cause book for the period 1973 to 1977 also includes some criminal charges. The series also consists of indexes arranged alphabetically by surname. Each cause book entry includes the case number, the style of cause, solicitors' names, the nature of the charges, and a list of the proceedings. Cause books are often the first step in Supreme Court research and can often be used to locate court orders.

The series consists of indexes and bills of sale from the Quesnel County Court. The records were created between 1915 and 1925 and include bills of sale, agreements, liens relating to livestock, conditional sales, and Land Settlement Board soldier settlements.

The series consists of three volumes of indexes. The “FROM” volume is arranged alphabetically by seller’s name and the “TO” volume is arranged alphabetically by purchaser’s namer. The third volume is a complete register with both seller and purchaser’s names. This volume includes names, occupations, addresses, and the particulars of purchase. The “TO” and “FROM” volumes include file and page numbers that correspond to the bill of sale records in subsequent folders. The bills of sale are arranged by what the indexes call the “file” number.

The sales were made under subsection 4 of section 2 of the “Sale of Goods Act Amendment” (SBC 1916, c. 56) which states “The office for filing shall be the office of the Registrar of the County Court holden in or nearest to the place where delivery of the chattels is made or required to be made.”
