Paper Manufacturing Company, Alberni, 1894. A narrative of a journey from Ucluelet to Village Island, 1896, is also on microfilm.

Long road to travel

The item is a reel of industrial film showing the transportation of logs from the forest to the mill. The main part of the film follows a load of logs down the coast from Masset Inlet on Haida Gwaii aboard the self-dumping log barge "Haida Carrier", towed by the tug "Haida Chieftain". Also includes footage of logging trucks and the manufacture and shipping of forest products.

Boat sounds and miscellaneous

This tape begins with Imbert Orchard announcing "People in Landscape in the New Caledonia Country". A motorboat can be heard, followed by harbour sounds, and the sounds of the "Skeena Princess" and the "Parizeau" being unloaded at the dock at Queen Charlotte City. Sounds of unloading procedures are accompanied by Orchard's narration, and include: longshoremen's equipment; blocks and chains; pulleys; cranes and forklifts. An unidentified First Nations song with drum accompaniment is heard, followed by construction sounds and bells.

Photographs

The series consists of loose photographs, a mixture of negatives and prints, taken by Carmichael in the early 1900s. They are of various places including Alberni, Powell River, Haida Gwaii and Peace River and show landscapes, water courses, dams and people as well as mining operations. Several prints may have been removed from an album.

Each image was given an HP (historic photograph) number in the sequence HP001665 to HP001739 and kept as part of the Archives general file (accession 193501-001). Prints, both original and copy, are in the HP original folders while negatives, both original and copy, are filed either by HP number or by negative number, depending on the media (glass, nitrate, acetate etc.).
