SUPPLIED TITLE OF TAPE(S): Steamboating on BC interior lakes PERIOD COVERED: 1917-1963 RECORDED: Victoria (B.C.), 1979 SUMMARY: Captain Walter H. Spiller recalls his service with the CPR's BC Lake and River Service on the interior lakes from 1917 to 1963. Beginning as a youthful general duty hand he rose to command paddlewheelers and tugs. These tapes provide "a comprehensive and chronological coverage of the development and decline of steamboating on the interior lakes, with details of vessels and the names of personnel involved. [NOTE: Captain Spiller's reminiscences were first prepared for a talk given to members of the Thermopylae Club of Victoria in 1979. The original talk was retaped, with further details added, later in 1979. The revised tapes and the original taped talk were loaned to the Maritime Museum of B.C. for copying.]

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-09-08 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Boyd Campbell Affleck came to the Kootenay/Arrow Lakes region in 1907 from Ontario. He took up a surveying job near Nakusp. He discusses settlers and speculators. He describes Fruitva;le in 1907; the development; the early settlers. Then he discusses irrigation and then more on Fruitvale; the impact of WWI on the region; fruit grown; a picnic in the 1930s; settlers; clearing land; and the Fruitvale town site. Mr. Affleck settled near Fruitvale in 1918; lost his hand and was forced back into survey work. He surveyed the town of Salmo. He offers an anecdote about the red light ladies of Erie and then offers more about Fruitvale; the impact of the Trail smelter; and recalls the forest fire of 1939. TRACK 2: Mr. Affleck continues with more on the forest fire. Then he dis;cusses the Trail smelter; effects on fruit farms; Columbia Gardens and survey work at Nelson. He came with his parents from Alberta to Nelson in 1898. He describes the Silver King Mine and smelters in the area. He describes an incident on May 24, 1907, with Charles "Charlie" Sherwin; the steamer races on Kootenay Lake between the CPR's "Kokanee" and Great Northern's "Kaslo". RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-05-19 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: George Palmer came from Calgary to Kaslo in 1897 with his family. He recalls childhood memories of Kaslo, early residents including: John Kean, John Dawson, Pete Culligan, Scotty Mitchell, Spokane Harris, mining activities, schools, the red light district, and the Comique, a theatrical or variety show venue. He discusses the railroads of the area; Kaslo and Slocan and the Great Northern, the "Fire of 1910" and old timers of the area.

TRACK 2: Basil Palmer, George's brother, continues this tape. He was four years old when the family arrived in Kaslo. He discusses the town of Kaslo, transportation, May 24 celebrations, horse races, main street, the Kaslo and Slocan Railway, and Great Northern Lake Transportation. He recalls the mining boom being over by 1900 and local individuals such as Henry Giegerich, John L. Natallack, Ralph Kenyon, Sandy Robinson, the Comique, local agriculture and the CPR lake boats.

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-05-19 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Elizabeth Giegerich relates memories of early Ainsworth and Kaslo. Her father, Henry Giegerich, moved his family to Ainsworth Hot Springs from Montana in 1891. Elizabeth's younger sister was the first white child born in Ainsworth. Her father was a storekeeper in Ainsworth and later at Kaslo. She discusses many events including town fires, the celebrations, Queen Victoria's Jubilee, sports, social life, George Kane and John Kean, prospecting, early settlers, and the effects of World War I. RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-05-18 SUMMARY: John Black recalls early life in Sandon. His father John came from Ontario in 1895 to mine, settled in Sandon, and later opened a store. Black describes some of the early settlers, his childhood activities, the social life, and sports. He also discusses the area's mining activities, the region's railways, the fires at Sandon and Kaslo, saloons and the red light district of Sandon.

CALL NUMBER: T0346:0001 RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-05-22 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Maitland Harrison came from England in 1908 with hopes of fruit farming. He describes the area around Queen's Bay and Crawford Bay and some of the early settlers, including the Lord Aylmer and Atree families fruit farming conditions and the large home and grounds his cousin, Commander Matthew James Harrison, built at Crawford Bay. The abandoned settlement of Pilot Bay is described with the resident lighthouse keeper, Gene Montrey.

TRACK 2: The description of his cousin's home at Crawford Bay is continued. In 1911, Maitland purchased land at Shutty Bench close to Kaslo. He describes Kaslo's main street, social activities, winter, settlers; the Anderson family, Dave Kane, Sam Green, and John Shutty; employment, the coming of the railway, and World War I. After the war he returned to Shutty Bench, but found neighbours had moved away, and he decided to relocate to Howser where he started a logging business with a friend, Mr. Ainsworth.

CALL NUMBER: T0346:0002 RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-05-22 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Harrison continues his description of Howser, trails used for cattle transport, Duncan Lake, also known as Howser Lake, the Lardeau Valley, the town of Lardo and residents, Henry Hincks, Slim Hadfield, Charlie Hendrickson, Healy of Healy's Landing, Bill Simpson, the Matthew brothers, Spencer's City, and Ferguson.

TRACK 2: The tape continues with a discussion of "Red" McLeod's exploits. Daisy, Mrs. Harrison, joins in the discussion of local characters: Red McLeod, Bob Boyles, a local hunter, Sammy Loffman, "Snowslide Pete", Edgar Peterson, and Maude Healy. She talks about leaving England and coming to Bonnington where her father owned the Queen Bess Mine. An unidentified female, probably Daisy's mother, whose husband worked for the Queen Bess Mine, adds to the discussion.

The fonds consists of 128 photographs created by Ray Starr Goodwin. The photographs include pictures of Ray Goodwin and other members of the Goodwin and Green families of Kaslo, B.C. between ca. 1900 and 1920. There are images of Kaslo, of family members at home, at their summer camp at Beauty Beach on Kootenay Lake, camping at Greer's Beach (Kitsilano) and in Stanley Park, Vancouver.

There are also photographs of Kootenay Lake and other natural features around the Kootenay Lake and Kaslo area such as the Kokanee Glacier as well as photographs of steamboats, the Kaslo and Slocan Railway and various mines.

The fonds consists of a minute book of the Kaslo Board of Trade and certificates relating to the formation of the Board.

The sub-series consists of oral history interviews recorded in the Kootenay Lake region and mainly dealing with the history of that region from the 1830s to the 1960s, as well as the history of some communities in the Arrow Lakes and East Kootenay regions.

The item is a large, illustrated volume titled "British Columbia: of their doings there by one of them" by Frederick D. Williams. The volume contains a manuscript account of a journey from London, England to Vancouver B.C. and back between August 28 and October 6, 1897. Williams landed in New York and travelled by train through Chicago and Spokane to Nelson where he and his party took the Kootenay Lake steamer to Kaslo and the train to Sandon and then on up to Nakusp and Revelstoke, Kamloops and Vancouver.

The volume has been illustrated by glued in photographs, magazine prints, maps, menus, passenger lists and programs.

• William Alfred Galliher was a barrister, judge and Member of Parliament (MP). He had interests in mining development, mineral claims and real estate.

The records include correspondence, legal documents, papers of clients, financial records, account book relating to Galliher's law practice in Nelson and Vancouver. Also, correspondence relating to mining development and mineral claims in Kootenay district with Robert Garvin McLeod (mine owner) and others; re sale of lots in the towns of Nelson, Erie, Three Forks, Comaplix, and Kaslo; re breweries, hotels, grocers, a furniture store, and other businesses in Nelson; relating to land sales of the Columbia and Kootenay Railway Company, and the Similkameen Valley Coal and Development Company; with W.H. Keary, Mayor of New Westminster, re sale of town lots; correspondence with Sir Wilfrid Laurier re Galliher's appointment as a judge for the British Columbia Court of Appeal, 1908-1909.
