Album [views of British Columbia and Quebec]

File consists of one photograph album containing photographs depicting scenes and people in British Columbia and Quebec. The British Columbia photographs depict Indigenous people, the Canadian Pacific Railway at Yale Canyon and various views of Fraser Canyon, a paddle wheeler on the Fraser River (Hope, Yale), a pack train and G.M. Sproat, fishing operations, hunting along the Skeena River, militia and navy groups, and the H.M.S. Caroline at Esquimalt.

Some of the portraits of Indigenous people included in this album appear to have been taken during Department of Indian Affairs tours of inspection in 1873 near Cape Caution (including J-04207). In the album, the photographs are dated 1883.

August Castle interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1963-03-14 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. August Castle came to Yale in 1882. Born in Victoria, he liked fishing, hunting and prospecting. He discusses mining and prospecting in the area, the Western Nickel Mine, and the development of Yale. He describes the gold mining days, offering several anecdotes. TRACK 2: Mr. Castle continues with more anecdotes.

Autograph book

The file is an autograph book of Madelon Cruickshank (nee Derdinger) who emigrated from Alsace-Lorraine to Victoria ca. 1875. Her Aunt Sarah, Mrs. David Oppenheimer, gave her this book. Madelon later lived in Yale, B.C. and San Francisco before returning to Victoria and marrying George Cruickshank. The signatures in the book are from people in Victoria, Yale and San Francisco, 1880-1883.

Bill Murphy interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1963-03-13 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. William T. "Bill" Murphy describes how his father, John Joseph Murphy, came over to Canada from Ireland to Seaward Bluff as a stone mason in the 1880s and worked for the CPR. He worked as a homesteader as well, and worked at Ruby Creek. Mr. Murphy describes Yale at the turn of the century; some old timers, such as Ned Stout, a pioneer who came up the Fraser who lived to be 104 years old; more about Yale, homesteading, the development of Yale including the CNR and roads being built, Laidlaw, the St. Alma Valley, Indians on the reserve, the church, more on Indians, schools, and finally, the hard winters. British Colonies album

The item consists of one album of approximately 150 photographs depicting landscapes, architecture, and people in Malta, South Africa (Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope, Table Bay, and Simon’s Bay), Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Victoria), and British Columbia (Hope, Yale, and the Fraser River). Photographs of British Columbia taken by Francis George Claudet.

All photographs have been captioned by the album creator. A paper bookplate has been adhered to the inside front cover depicting a heraldic badge containing the motto “forte scutum salus ducum” ("A Strong Shield is the Salvation of Leaders”, the motto of the Earl Fortescue peerage) with the name “Carlingford” beneath. It is probable that the album was created by or for Hugh Fortescue (16 April 1854-29 October 1932), the 4th Earl Fortescue.

Canadian Pacific Railway (C.P.R.) photographs

Series consists of 545 photographs of the Canadian Pacific Railway (C.P.R.), thought to be taken by Richard or Hannah Maynard. In 1880-1881, Richard Maynard was hired to document the construction of the C.P.R. but photos within this series may have been taken at later dates or by other photographers. Images depict trains ("rolling stock"); views of locations along the construction route, including rivers, bridges, and mountains; tracks and construction in progress; wrecks following accidents; snowsheds; and portraits of workers.

Anderson was a miner and manager of the Rail Road House Hotel in Yale which he co-owned with Arthur Churton, Victoria soap manufacturer. Unit contains correspondence from Churton re the hotel, various accounts, receipts, contracts and agreements, pockets notebooks as well as notes and recipes re soap manufacture. Also includes Free Miner's certificates, assay report (1864, Rising Sun Company).

Item consists of a documentary video which addresses the decision-making procedures of the Ministry of Forests when confronted with ecological and other values in forestry resource management. Specifically, the video deals with the spruce budworm, a moth larvae, and whether chemical sprays should be used on trees in the Fraser Valley. Minister of Forests, Tom Waterland, hosts an interdisciplinary conference to discuss the issue. The video also addresses how media coverage and public response to these issues.
