[Logging scene.] [The yacht 'Taconite'] in Vancouver Harbour for King and Queen's visit. Many flags and pennants. Lion's Gate Bridge in background. Hundreds of boats in Harbour: fishboats with flags, cabin cruisers, motorboats, and RCN destroyer H48, 'HMCS Fraser'. Biplanes fly over bridge very close to cables. 'Princess Marguerite' hoves into view then sails away under bridge to Vancouver Island, carrying the King and Queen. Village church with wedding party emerging. Footage. Island Tug & Barge vessels and operations on the BC coast and the open Pacific. The first roll, which relates specifically to the operation of the tugs "Sudbury" and "Sudbury II", comprises outs from the film SAGA OF THE SUDBURYS (shot by tug skipper W.H. Blagborne and produced by Parry Films for IT&B). The second roll (which does not relate to the SUDBURY film) shows a barge removing the span of the old Point Ellice Bridge in Victoria; the opening of the new bridge in 1957; a tug towing a scow to Nitinat Bar; the tug "Lloyd B. Gore" towing the old sternwheeler "Delta King" to San Francisco; the "Island Sovereign" towing a dredge platform at sea; vessels at dock in Victoria.

Industrial film. Deep water towing and rescue work by the tugs "Sudbury" and "Sudbury II". "Sudbury" (acquired 1954) tows four tankers from South America in tandem with "Island Sovereign" (longest single line tow in marine history); rescues the freighter "Makedonia"; tows the barge "Straits Maru" (the hull of the Cunard liner "Parthia") to Japan; rescues the Liberty ship "Thunderbird", the "Rowenmore", and the freighters "Lomaland" and "Andros Legend" in the open Pacific. "Sudbury II" (acquired 1958) sails from Australia and is refitted at the company's Victoria headquarters; leaves Victoria for first tow (two Liberty ships) and subsequent service, including rescue of old aircraft carrier "Guadalcanal". Includes scenes of Island Tug and Barge repair shop in Victoria.

News item. Premier Bennett is interviewed on the Inner Harbour causeway. He says that the Transport and Communications Minister is continually reviewing ferry rate structures. Rates will not go down, even in the tourist season. One of BC's main problems, he says, is the high cost of services, even in the forest industry where "we have lost our competitive edge." The Washington State Ferries, according to Mr. Bennett, do not have BC's high labour costs.
