Prince George and Omineca-Peace River Parks records

Prince George Forest District operational records

This series contains operational records of the Prince George Forest District relating to forest administration, 1919-1981. Records are arranged according to the Forest Service filing system. These records include annual reports, ranger meeting summaries, records regarding timber exports, forest protection, forest reserves, the Peace River hydroelectric projects, the Mica Dam flood basin, land use, timber cruising, silviculture, aerial photography, rights-of-way, timber sales, timber licenses, Public Sustained Yield Units, tree farm licences, and forest wood lot licenses. Also contains construction and maintenance reports pertaining to ranger stations, lookouts, forest roads and trails, boathouses, telephone lines and other Forest Service facilities. Records consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, licenses, permits, plans, etc.

This series consists of records of the Ministry of Environment (previously the Dept. of Lands, Forests and Water Resources), Power and Special Projects Division. Records include correspondence, feasibility studies, consultants' reports, engineering studies, application hearings, submissions, progress reports, contract drawings and tender documents regarding hydro-electric projects, water licenses, flood control, petroleum refinery pollution, sewerage treatment plants, fisheries and wildlife, and environmental impact, 1949-1976.

The collection largely contains materials relating to Arrow Lakes Dam, 1949, 1954-1969; the Jordan River redevelopment project, 1968-1972; the Babine Lake development (Fulton River dam), 1967-1970; the Columbia River Mica Dam project, 1954-1970; the Duncan Lake storage development, 1971-1973; the Kootenay canal development, and the Portage Mountain development (Peace River W.A.C. Bennett Dam), 1958-1967. It also includes hearings and submissions regarding the Iona Island sewage treatment plant, 1957-1959; records of Canada - B.C. Consultative Committee on the Okanagan basin agreement, 1970; B.C. Comptroller of Water Rights hearings regarding Nechako River, 1949; various B.C. Research Council reports, 1966-1973; and International Joint Commission (U.S. and Canada) hearings, 1955.

Cariboo district land records

This series contains the records of the Gold Commissioner, Government Agent, and Assistant Land Commissioner, Cariboo District (Quesnel). The records consist of lot registers, certificates of purchase, certificates of pre-emption, registers of pre-emptions (canceled and allowed), registers of land applications and lands purchased, register of leaves of absence granted pre-emption on active service, minute books containing lot register of lands along the route of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, and registers of hay and pasture land leases. The series also includes townsite registers for Quesnel, Barkerville, and Wells and lot registers for some townships in the Peace River Block. Volumes 89-98 and 153-158 are oversize.

Correspondence

Series consists of two letters to Richard Wolfenden and one to Madge (Wolfenden) Hamilton, 1904, 1908, 1958, containing reminiscences of early British Columbia by Francis Brook Gregory and John Connell and reminiscences of the family of R.C. Moody by R.A.C. Lowndes (great grandson); one invoice of Robert Porter and Sons.

This series contains operational records from the Prince George Forest District and consists of property ledgers for "non-expendable property" - see: Operational Manual with instructions to Forest Officers ... (Victoria, 1942), pp. 161-168, 311-327 for definitions and instructions - and a uniform ledger containing records concerning items on charge to personnel who have left the district. Files 1-5, Volume 1 are a property ledger for the period 1953-1955; File 6, Volume 1 through File 1, Volume 4 are a property ledger, 1961-1966; and Files 2-4, Volume 4 contain a uniform ledger, 1950-1970.

Photographs

The series consists of loose photographs, a mixture of negatives and prints, taken by Carmichael in the early 1900s. They are of various places including Alberni, Powell River, Haida Gwaii and Peace River and show landscapes, water courses, dams and people as well as mining operations. Several prints may have been removed from an album.

Each image was given an HP (historic photograph) number in the sequence HP001665 to HP001739 and kept as part of the Archives general file (accession 193501-001). Prints, both original and copy, are in the HP original folders while negatives, both original and copy, are filed either by HP number or by negative number, depending on the media (glass, nitrate, acetate etc.).

Manuscripts and other material

The series consists of manuscripts and typescripts of articles on Northern B.C. published in various magazines and newspapers. It also includes research notebooks; clippings; correspondence and a bibliography of the Peace River Region by Gordon E. Bowes.

Forest fire aerial footage -- June 22-24, 1982 : flight and commentary

The item consists of a video copy of footage from 1982. Shows aerial footage of various forest fires between Squamish and Whistler, in the Cariboo Region, the Peace River Region, Bulkley Valley, Vancouver Island, and along the BC/Alberta border. Commentary discusses characteristics of the individual fires, their causes, specific problems presented, etc.

Del Miller interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], [196-] SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Del Miller recalls his arrival in BC in 1909 from Ontario; a wide variety of jobs he worked at upon arrival; South Fort George in 1911; Hudson's Hope; trapping; shipping freight on Peace; River; Finlay Rapids; more on trapping; living with his family in Deserters Canyon; trading posts; river transportation and freights; scows; more on Hudson's Hope; living in the region, including other pioneers and supplies and the Beaver Indians; trapping; medical care; and a story about his son who was accidentally shot. TRACK 2: Mr. Miller continues with his story about his son; how airplane;s brought in supplies and mail; how he was a mail carrier for a year; how he got supplies from the Fraser River with barges; an account of river accidents; climate; trails; and family history.

Not all committees were recorded since each committee had the choice of whether to accept Hansard's services.
