Correspondence, manuscripts and other material

The series consists of records created and collected by William Henry Clarke, his wife Irene, and their son William (Bill), who managed Clarke, Irwin & Company Ltd., a publishing house in Toronto that was established in 1930. The records were created and collected in both a business and personal capacity between 1930 and 1979.

The collection consists of 120 original Emily Carr letters sent to both William and Irene Clarke between 1941 and 1945. Alongside nearly all these letters are typed transcripts of the letter, as well as the 'flimsies' of the Clarke letters sent to Carr. Also included in the collection are two folders of correspondence between William Clarke and Ira Dilworth between 1944 and 1957, which are related to the publishing of Emily Carr's manuscripts. There are additional folders containing correspondence from William and Irene Clarke, Ira Dilworth, Oxford University Press, Lawren Harris, and other lawyers, solicitors, publishers, amongst others. The collection also includes Emily Carr's probate as well as agreement between Emily Carr, Clarke Irwin & Co. Ltd, and Oxford University Press. Also included are drafts of manuscripts, including 'Pause', 'The Heart of a Peacock', and 'Wild Flowers', and other manuscripts from both Emily Carr and Doris Shadbolt. The collection also includes publicity material, such as book reviews of 'The Book of Small', Carr's posthumous art exhibitions, two photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, as well as copies of speeches given by Emily Carr, Professor Garnett Sedgewick and others. Finally, there are photocopies of some correspondence from Emily Carr to Carol Pearson and Alice Carr from 1942 to 1945.

Some of the contents contain historical language and content that some may consider offensive.

Mount St. Mary Hospital records

Series consists of records related to Mount St. Mary Hospital in Victoria, during the time that the Sisters of St. Ann administered and staffed the institution.

Mount St. Mary Hospital was founded in 1941 as a home for “the aged and infirm and chronic cases” as an adjunct to the nearby St. Joseph’s Hospital. The land on which the hospital was built was purchased in 1939 from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Victoria, and that same year the Provincial Government announced a grant of $50,000 to the Sisters for the construction of the facility. The first building was completed in 1941.

In 1965, Mount St. Mary Hospital was asked to initiate an extended care program. A Board of Management was formed in 1967 and the constitution and bylaws were approved in 1968. The board consisted of nine members, six appointed by the Sisters of St. Ann, one appointed by medical staff and one by the City of Victoria. In 2003, the old Mount St. Mary Hospital on Burdette Street was demolished and the new Mount St. Mary on the corner of Fairfield Road and Quadra Street opened. From September 1990, Mount St. Mary Hospital has been owned and operated by the Marie Esther Society.

Victoria Supreme Court judgements

Series consists of judgements created between November 1880 and October 1977 by the Victoria Supreme Court. Orders are the formal expression of the ruling of the court and judgements are the final orders issued in a case. Early records relate to a variety of matters, including adoption and divorce. Records after 1958 primarily relate to financial matters such as damages, costs, payments, bankruptcy recovery, and divorce costs and maintenance. Original textual records up to the end of 1958 appear to have been destroyed after microfilming; retrieve those records using microfilm.

Records are arranged by volume and folio number as assigned by the court registry. The records were scheduled for full retention under Court Services ORCS (schedule 100152) 51400-25.

Ernest Crocker photos and ephemera

The series consists of an assortment of over 600 black and white photos and negatives, largely attributed to Ernest Crocker. Many of these are of familiar Crocker themes, such as World War One, houses and buildings in Victoria, portraits of families and individuals, as well as scenic photos, taken largely on Vancouver Island, but also British Columbia as well as overseas. In addition, there is some ephemera in the form of postcards, advertising brochures, correspondence to Ernest Crocker, sales receipts with regards his many clients who purchased his photos, as well as his price lists. Within the series is the embossed metal stamp for 'Trio'.

Other material within the series consists of items that was apparently collected by Crocker during his lifetime. This includes correspondence and postcards, photos by other photographers, and a piece of artwork by John P. Peters.

Given the large volume of other Crocker material in this fonds, it is possible that there are duplicates of some of his photos (notably those relating to WW1), within this series. There is also material that is unique, however, such as the 'Trio' stamp, his correspondence, and order slips.

The dates of the series are from 1887 to around the end of World War 2 in 1945.

Ernest Crocker fonds

The fonds notably consists of military-related content from the early 1900s until the 1940s. Pre-WW1 photographs include a limited amount of photographs relating to the Canadian Militia. Photographs taken during the First World War including most departures of troops by ship from Victoria and other departures by train from Vancouver and Vernon. There are also images of numerous B.C. training camps which cover topics from training exercises, inspections, mascots and portraiture. For material covering the inter-war and Second World War, images are predominantly of ceremonies, visiting military dignitaries as well as of graduations and groups of soldiers who trained at the Officer’s Training Centre in Gordon Head. There are also photographs of the Women’s Army Corps and of various legions following the end of World War II.
The next largest group of photographs is a collection of city views, natural landscapes and other tourist-centric photography which Crocker used to make postcards which he sold. These cover large Canadian cities but also various stops along the CPR route through the Rocky Mountains, as well as other locations on Vancouver Island, across BC and down the west coast of the United States and even Mexico.
Other potential series in the Ernest Crocker fonds include portraiture, tableaux vivants, Royal Visits, celebrations and parades, and sporting events.
Also included is some ephemera, Trio postcards, correspondence, sales receipts, and an embossed seal with the Trio stamp.

The collection is presently arranged by size and to some extent format. Containers are not organized by date nor by topic and appear to be mixed throughout the collection. The majority of photographic records appear to have been created in Victoria and the surrounding area, with additional photographic records covering Vancouver Island, the British Columbia Interior, Winnipeg, Toronto, London UK, California, U.S.A., and Mexico.

Crocker, Ernest William Albert

Victoria Supreme Court divorce case files

Series consists of divorce case files created between 1940 and 1949 by the Victoria Supreme Court registry. Orders have been removed from this series and are filed separately as GR-1587. Typical divorce case files can include petitions, affidavits, summons, correspondence and other records relating to the case.

Records are arranged by case file numbers, which were assigned chronologically by the court registry and include the year a divorce was initiated. The records were scheduled for full retention under Court Services ORCS (schedule 100152) 51440-20.

Victoria Supreme Court divorce orders

Series consists of decrees nisi, decrees absolute, and divorce orders issued by the Supreme Court of Victoria between 1877 and 1998. Decrees nisi were used inconsistently prior to the 1930s and required a waiting period before a decree absolute could be issued. Between 1968 and 1985, the waiting period was three months. A divorce was not legally in effect without a decree absolute. After 1985, divorce orders automatically came into effect 31 days after the divorce was granted, barring an appeal.

Volumes 1-11 and 19-43 are indexed. The records were scheduled for full retention under Court Services ORCS (schedule 100152) 51440-25.

Photographs

Series consists of 21 graphic items (prints, negatives, and glass plate negatives) pertaining to the Helmcken family. The photographs depict buildings and events in the Victoria area, as well as one portrait photograph of J.S. Helmcken seated on a chair. In 2021, one picture of a house in Scotland that was home to the Helmcken boys was Found in Collection and added to this accession.
J-01853 and J-08154 were found in collection in 2024 and added to this series.

Chinese josh [joss] house

The item is a black and white cabinet card (with edges trimmed) showing a Chinese temple or Chinese community Tachiu event which may have been hosted by the Hongnen Chee Kung Tong (CKT). It may have been taken in Victoria. On the back of the card is the studio inscription of Mrs. R. Maynard's photographic studio with the address given as the corner of Douglas and Johnson Streets in Victoria. It is presumed to have been taken between 1872 and 1892 as that is when Maynard's studio was located at Douglas and Johnson Streets.

Baptismal, marriage and burial church registers

The series consists of copies of British Columbia baptism, marriage and death registers created by churches that conducted the ceremonies. Currently only records (baptisms 1849-1899; marriages 1864-1903) of St. Andrews Cathedral, Victoria , are available.

Churches were required to submit their baptismal registers to the Vital Statistics Division in the 1940s so the registers could be microfilmed. Vital Statistics subsequently created an alphabetical index to the microfilmed registers, and a database was created from the index volumes with supplementary information from the microfilmed registers added to the entries. This information is searchable via the BC Archives Genealogy database. The microfilm copies of the original registers may include some additional information or context that was not included in the database.

Each bound volume was created by one church. Each entry corresponds with one ceremony, but may involve multiple individuals. The entries within each volume are ordered chronologically and may be numbered. Every volume varies in the type and presentation of information included and may not be consistent throughout one volume. All entries include the date of the ceremony, name of individual(s) involved in the ceremony, and the name of the priest who conducted the ceremony.

Baptism register entries may also include name of child, date of birth, place of birth, sex of child, name and surname of father, name and maiden name of mother, residence of parents, profession of parents, religion of parents, name and surname of grandparents, religion of grandparents, and name and surname of godparents.

Marriage register entries may also include name and surname of groom, name and maiden name of bride, age of bride, age of groom, name and surname of their parents, name and surname of witnesses present, religion of named individuals, place of birth, and signatures of parties involved.

Death register entries may also include: death dates, cause of death, age at death, location of internment and information about the funeral ceremony.

Indigenous people are included in the registers (as Indians or Sauvages). Some Indigenous names are included. Many baptisms of Indigenous people were in groups and may only consist of a list of the Christian names the priest gave to the baptized individuals. Tribal or community affiliations may be included.

Some entries include the geographical location that the ceremony took place. This location may vary from the location of the church, as some priests travelled quite widely to conduct ceremonies.

Speech from the Throne

The collection consists of an incomplete set of copies of the Speech from the Throne, created between 1872 and 2024. The collection was made by the BC Archives using copies of the speeches, including red-ribbon copies, drawn together from various government office sources.

The Speech from the Throne is given by the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia who addresses the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia at its opening and/or closing sessions. The speech outlines the executive government's plans at the start of each session of the Legislative Assembly and reviews the accomplishments of the government at the end of each session.

Victoria School Board minutes and other material

This series contains a bound volume of minutes of meetings of the Victoria School Board, along with receipts of payments made by the Board. The series includes minutes of meetings of school board electors (showing votes cast by individual electors for particular candidates) and contains copies of provincial government circulars relating to education and copies of schools-related bills, by-laws, rules and regulations.

Peter Secord Lampman papers

Correspondence inward and outward, legal correspondence, receipts and accounts, invitations; correspondence of the family of James Henry White (1855-1948) of New Westminster; correspondence inward to Edward Woodman White (1887-1962) from Violet (Latham) White. Peter Secord Lampman was born on 23 June 1867 in Stamford, Ontario. He completed high school in Thorold, Ontario and attended Trinity College and Osgoode Hall in Toronto. Between 1888-1892, he read law with firms in St. Catherines, Hamilton and Toronto. Called to the Ontario Bar in 1892, he came to British Columbia and was called to the Bar in 1893. For two years he practiced law with George Powell in Victoria. In 1895, he left the practice to become Secretary of the British Columbia Law Society, a position he filled until 1905, when he was appointed judge in the County Court in Victoria. He remained on the bench of the County Court until 1936, when he retired. He was active in the North Pacific Tennis Association and the Senior's North West Golf Association. On September 26, 1901, Peter Lampman married Cecelia Maud Prior, daughter of Colonel E.G. Prior. They had one son, Thomas E. Lampman. Peter Lampman died on November 20, 1940. The records consist of 12 boxes of correspondence, receipts, accounts and invitations. One file contains papers related to the estate of E.G. Prior. Boxes 9-12 contain correspondence and papers relating to the family of Rev. James Henry White of New Westminster, in particular correspondence of James' son Edward W. White and Violet (Latham) White.
