Reminiscences / Ernest Hubert Allcock

The item is a photocopy of the reminiscences of Ernest Hubert Allcock. Allcock emigrated from England to Alberta in 1909 and worked on farms and on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. In 1914 he homesteaded near White's Landing, north of Quesnel. He was highway foreman in Quesnel, and from 1941 to 1952 in Lillooet.

Miscellaneous records

The file contains a daybook of unidentified blacksmith at Quesnel, 1871-1882; papers relating to E.T. Dodge, including power of attorney, 1867 and a number of promissory notes; papers re post office at Hanceville, 1902-1904; cartoon of a politician courting Chinese and Indian voters.

Diaries

Microfilmed collection of diaries produced by Wellington D. Moses the Black barber of Barkerville. The diaries in this series are from the years 1865, 1871, 1874, 1876, 1878, 1879 and 1880. These diaries were microfilmed in sequence with diaries and cashbooks held by the BC Archives, and can be located on reels A01046 and A01047.

James Morriss interview

The item is an audio recording of an interview with James Morriss.

T4185:0001 track 1: James Moriss, from Gradna (Grodno?) in Russia, born 1895. His father, a railroad builder, had work in Canada for three years, 1907. Jim, the only son, aged 15, wanted to come to Canada. Left Russia in 1911 with an uncle and several other young men. They were smuggled out of Russia and traveled by boat from Germany to Halifax; then by railway to Cochrane, Ontario, where a Jewish friend of his father's was to look after him. Jim worked on the railroad, and eventually got out to Prince Rupert. Worked on the building of the Grand Trunk Pacific, then on building the Pacific Great Eastern from Prince George south. The war in 1914 stopped all work. Jim and several others walked south past Quesnel, looking for work. Finally, at Australian, were hired by local rancher, Windt, to harvest potato crop. Track 2: Next year, 1917, Jim worked for R. Middleton; then for Robert Yorston for 4.5 years. Jim took up a pre-emption, built cabin and later a big house. Married Helen Zschiedrich, 1924. Raised four girls. Worked on building of the PGE after World War I. After World War II, considered returning to Russia, but changed his mind when he realized he couldn't live under Communist rule.

Series consists of Clinton Small Debts Court cause books for 1957-1964. Volume 1 includes entries for case numbers 1/1957-54/1962 (Jul 1957-Jun 1962) and volume 2 includes entries for case nos. 55/1962-131/1964 (Oct 1962 - Dec 1964). Cause books provide the framework for court cases and may include the names of parties, the dates when proceedings occurred, and volume and folio numbers for locating final orders. Cause books were used by the courts until approximately the mid-1970s.

Judge's inscribed copy of Herbert Broom and Leonard Shelford, The Practice of the County Court (London, England, 1858). The volume contains inscriptions in the handwriting of P.J. O'Reilly and W.G. Cox, as well as artwork by Cox. The inscriptions say: "Government of British Columbia Magistrate at Fort Hope" and "Government of British Columbia, Cariboo East, 1863". The volume is bound with an animal skin spine.

Barkerville after the fire of September 16, 1868

Item consists of one photograph of Barkerville the day after fire destroyed the town on September 16, 1868. Groups of men stand amid rubble, smoke, and tree stumps. An unopened safe from The Bank of British Columbia can be seen at the centre of the image.
