The series consists of a variety of record books created at Woodlands School (later known simply as Woodlands) between 1908 and 1974, with the majority of the records dating from the late 1930s to the 1950s. The records relate to both staff and residents, although the majority of the records pertain to residents. Staff records include “position vacant” cards, lists of staff and the dates they joined and left Woodlands, and ledgers detailing absences and sick time for both male and female staff members. The staff lists are not comprehensive and frequently appear to provide a snapshot in time.
Records relating to patients provide evidence of the day-to-day functioning of the institution, including one- or two-sentence long hourly reports by nursing staff. Researchers should note that while specific individuals are named in the records, the records do not include case files. Some “propensity” ledgers provide alphabetical listings of patients, their admission dates and patient number, a brief one- or two-word description of why they were admitted, information about clothing, religion, and whether they left Woodlands. However, these registers do not cover the entire period of time that Woodlands operated and should not be seen as admissions registers.
The series includes a set of record books with daily shift reports that list disturbances, illnesses, numbers of residents employed in certain tasks, outings to movies and concerts, and any other noteworthy occurrences. The series contains ledgers relating to residents’ health, and other books related to their day-to-day lives. Records related to health care include those detailing medicine dosages, notes on blood pressure, and ‘doctors’ orders’ books. Records relating to daily life include notes on clothing and shoes sent to be cleaned, repaired, or discarded, numbers of residents sent to the ‘airing court’ for recreation, and records relating to the sewing and knitting done by residents. In some cases, ledgers provide assessments of the knitting skill of residents, and it appears that patients did sewing for both themselves and for staff. Records relating to shoes and clothing appear to be carbon copies of receipts issued when items were sent for repair or cleaning, and many are difficult to read. The series also includes general ward counts and statistics as well as a ward inventory listing everything from brooms to medical equipment. Some ledgers provide information on residents who were transferred to or from institutions at Essondale, Tranquille, and Colquitz.
There appear to have been three staff shifts in Woodlands, and records are often annotated with the time of the shift. Shifts ran from 7 am to 3 pm, 3 pm to 11 pm, and 11 pm to 7 am. It is common to see annotations such as 3-11 next to a report.
Many of the ledgers were not labelled and do not have original titles on them. Titles in square brackets were supplied by the Archivist on the basis of the file list that accompanied the records when they were transferred to Archives custody. Where the assigned title does not appear adequate, a further explanatory note has been included. Explanatory notes have also been included in square brackets when the title on the ledger book was vague or potentially misleading.
Within the ledgers, the bulk of the records are organized chronologically. Some books contain indexes or are arranged alphabetically by surname, although due to the nature of the records it is more common to see chronological progressions.
Records in this series were selected for retention by staff working with the Records Management Branch in the early 1990s.

Women’s issues: program and resource files
The series consists of administrative and operational records related to women’s issues and programs in the Ministry of Women's Equality, and the Ministry of Government Management Services and Minister Responsible for Women’s Programs. Additionally, there are several files relating to women’s issues and projects under the guidance of different ministries in British Columbia, as well as inter-ministry working groups and commissions. A full list of ministries with records relating to women’s issues and programs in this series can be found in the attached file list.
The records cover a variety of topics as they relate to women, including: employment (non-traditional employment, women in trades, women in technology, statistics on women’s employment, and ministry job descriptions); education; aboriginal women; immigration; family violence and violence against women; children; sexual harassment; and maternity leave among others.
The records are comprised of program descriptions and overviews; resources, such as discussion papers and reports; memoranda; correspondence between ministries; briefing notes; meeting minutes and agendas; records of committees; and policies and programs from other provinces. The series also contains several published reports and pamphlets. Some of the records are covered by section 1 Women's Issues of the Women's Equality ORCS (schedule 11746).

Women’s issues case files : Bountiful, BC
The series consists of reports, agendas, briefing notes, correspondence and collections of news articles relating to the polygamist settlement at Bountiful, BC. The records were created between 2005 and 2007 by the Women’s and Seniors’ Policy branch of the Ministry of Community Services. Many of the records appear to have been collected in a call for responsive records in order to fulfill a Freedom of Information request. The published news articles appear to have been collected by Branch employees in attempts to monitor popular coverage of issues surrounding polygamy and the community at Bountiful. Some of the records also relate to potential legal action started by former members of the group.
British Columbia. Women's and Seniors' Policy branch
The series consists of articles, meeting minutes, briefing notes, reports, guides and resource guides created or received by the Women’s, Seniors’, and Community Services division of the Ministry of Community Services. The series includes a 2005 report issued by the Federal Government. The series also consists of the results to an anonymous questionnaire regarding women’s economic security and pay equity, as well as reports from the Save the Children foundation about issues affecting Aboriginal women and youth. The series, which covers issues affecting both Native and non-Native women, also consists of statistical profiles of Aboriginal and Metis communities in BC. The records provide evidence of the provincial government’s programs and services for women.. The records were created or received between 1996 and 2005. It is unclear whether the records were created by a branch of the Women’s, Senior’s, and Community Services division, or by the division itself. Other, slightly later, records pertaining to women’s issues were created by the Women’s and Seniors’ Policy branch and this branch is listed in the current ORCS (as of 2016) as the office of primary responsibility.
The records are arranged first numerically by file code and then alphabetically by file title, and are covered by ORCS 20000-20 and 20050-20 of schedule 117476 (Women’s Equality).

Women’s issues : Aboriginal and violence project case files
The series consists of records relating to the initiatives and programs regarding violence against women and children implemented by the federal government, the provincial government of British Columbia, and non-government organizations in British Columbia between 1988-1993.
The records focus primarily on family violence, and many of the files consist of federal initiatives to combat violence, including research and statistics on these issues. Many of the records also address shelters and transition housing, and include correspondence with non-government organizations that provide these services. Some records belong to the Stopping the Violence Initiative (ORCS 31000), and it is possible that other files were considered research and resource files in support of this initiative. Stopping the Violence Initiative consists of program funding for the provision of transition and safe houses, outreach, multicultural services, and counselling for women who experience violence and for children who witnessed abuse.
Many of the records were created or maintained by the Ministry of Social Services. In September 1993, the functions and responsibilities of the Ministry of Social Services regarding child care programs and the operation and maintenance of emergency shelters and transition homes were transferred to the Ministry of Women’s Equality (OIC 1220-1993).
The records consist of memoranda and correspondence regarding different programs, research papers, statistics, reports, and briefing notes.
The records correspond to ORCS 31000-20: Stopping the Violence (STV) Funding – issues files. Although many of the records do correspond to this ORCS, it appears there are additional records in this series that have not been classified accordingly or should be considered resources in support of STV.

The records were created and received by the Women’s, Seniors’ and Community Services division of the Ministry of Community Service between 2001 and 2003. It is unclear whether all the records were created by the Women’s and Seniors’ Policy branch of the division, or whether they were created by other offices within the division. The series includes a draft framework for action regarding fetal alcohol spectrum disorder as well as records relating to a variety of reproduction issues.
The series is arranged numerically by file code and then alphabetically by file title.
The records are covered by ORCS 23120-20 and 23140-20 of schedule 117476 (Women’s Equality).
British Columbia. Women's, Seniors', and Community Services
Women’s employment and economic issues files
The series consists of financial planning guides, correspondence and memos, reports, and articles relating to the employment and economic issues faced by British Columbian women. The records were created or received by the Women’s, Seniors’, and Community Services division of the Ministry of Community Services between 1995 and 2004. It is unclear whether a branch of the division, such as the Women’s and Seniors’ Policy branch, created the records or whether they were created elsewhere in the division. As of October 2016, the relevant ORCS listed the Women’s and Senior’s Policy branch as the Office of Primary Responsibility. Subjects of the records include the effect of a mandatory retirement age on older women, the struggle for pay equity and attempts to close the economic gap between men and women, employment opportunities for women, income assistance, and shortages of skilled labour.
The records are arranged numerically by file code and then alphabetically by file title. The series is covered by ORCS 21000-20, 21050-20, 21110-20 and 22500-20 of schedule 117476 (Women’s Equality).
