Translations of Vancouver Island treaties

The series consists of three documents relating to MS-0772 Register of land purchases from Indians. The agreements recorded in the register are referred to as the Vancouver Island treaties (formerly known as the Douglas or Fort Victoria treaties). In February 2017 a conference was held at the Songhees Wellness Centre, inviting Indigenous and non-Indigenous islanders to discuss the treaties, their history, and their present-day impact.

The conference commissioned the first translations of two of the treaties into Lekwungen by Songhees Elder Dr. Elmer George, and a cultural interpretation of the treaties in SENĆOŦEN by STOLȻEŁ, Tsartlip Elder John Elliot Sr. The Lekwungen translations are of the če’q’nein nəč’elŋxʷ- kʷ’ats’ayč iʔ xpeʔ kʷəliq̌a (Chekonein treaty) and the Teechamitsa treaty.

Dr. Elmer George and John Elliot Sr. were awarded the Meritorious Service Award by the Governor General of Canada in recognition of this work.

The records consist of photocopies of card index files created by John Green from 1970 to 1999 regarding Sasquatch sightings in Canada and the United States. The files cover information about sightings going back to 1900. Green collected the information from a variety of sources, including old newspapers and publications and from interviews and letters. Each card listed the name of the informant, the place and date of the sighting, as well as a brief description of the event. Many of the cards are marked with an "S" for sighting or a "T" for tracks. Green also marked a date on each card that seems to be the date of the creation of the card. The original cards were presumably arranged by location and date and the photocopies are in date groupings with some overlap. The series also includes a photocopy of a chronological listings of sightings compiled by Paul Johnson and Joan Jeffers in "The Pennsylvania Bigfoot".

Colour photos of Western Canada and Alaska

The series consists of 261 colour photographs of Western Canada and Alaska taken from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. The photos are predominantly personal holiday photos taken in Haida Gwaii, Yukon, Alaska, Alberta, the Okanagan, and Vancouver Island. All but 6 of the photographs consist of photographic slides. Most of the scenes are landscape photos, but there are also some of gatherings of family and friends. Most of the slides have handwritten titles on them which have been used to create the file list. There are also a few that were created professionally and likely purchased as souvenirs.

The slides were originally housed in two slide cases when found. One of the boxes contained a handwritten index as well as little cards that provides a title for about half of the collection of the slides. The cards makes reference to some photographs taken in England and Europe, but these were not found within the collection, and so it is assumed that they had been removed by the donor before being given to the BC Archives.

These photographs document many portions of the KVR, but are principally focused on the Coquihalla gorge portion of the line. In addition to photographs of the railway, engines, and surrounding geography, there are a large number of photographs documenting various engine crashes or disasters (such as floods, slides). Many of the locations are identified on the reverse of the photographs, a large number of which are named after Shakespearean characters (chief engineer of the KVR Andrew McCulloch was an admirer of Shakespeare) within the Coquihalla stretch - the Romeo station is particularly well documented. The Coquihalla portion of the line was a particularly challenging project, and although these photographs were taken after the line was completed, they document the engineering challenges of this region. Other locations featured in the photographs include Copper Mountain (near Princeton), Brookmere, Penticton, and Spences Bridge. There are a small number of photographs documenting other portions of the CPR in Golden BC and 2 photos of CPR in Lethbridge, Alberta. The majority of the photographs are not dated; the latest date marked on a photograph is 1955.

Photographs of hatcheries and fisheries, Harrison Lake and Babine Lake

The series consists of photographs of hatcheries and fisheries in British Columbia. The contents, as identified by the donor, are included below. The numbers correspond to envelopes.

  1. This top picture was probably of a pontoon used to hold salmon before spawning. Or possibly to carry trays of eggs to the hatchery after spawning. The boats were used by the fisheries for one use or another.

  2. I have no idea where these were taken with the exception of the top two which have writing on the back [Knough Lake, Fish Lake (Lac la Jeune), and between hatchery and Kamloops]. Frank Tingley wrote on the back of these two [three] pictures so I'm presuming he took them. He was a long time friend of my father and the man who introduced my dad to the fisheries. Frank Tingley and my father were two of the four men kept on the department after Ottawa gave up the fish culture business in British Columbia. He lived in the east for the rest of his life.

  3. Harrison Lake hatchery

  4. I don't know who Mr. Timmins was and these may be of no interest. The second man in this picture was Frank Tingley.

  5. These were probably of hatchery workers. "First class living quarter." And one of maybe a hatchery house and one of a mountain goat may be of no interest to you.

  6. I'm sure these are all pictures of collecting and spawning salmon. My father is in the top picture pushing at the stern of the boat (oval picture). The rest are all unidentified men.

  7. Hatchery interiors with troughs

  8. Unidentified hatchery pictures. My father's writing is on the back of the Babine Lake picture and I'm sure one of the hatchery pictures is of the Babine Lake hatchery.
