Wilson Duff research notes

The sub-series consists of Wilson Duff's research notes accumulated during his time as Curator of Anthropology at the Provincial Museum of British Columbia and it's predecessor. Records include field notebooks, drafts of scholarly articles and other publications, financial records, conference notes, maps, linguistic and other language material, notes on ethnobotany, census information, Mungo Martin's potlatch books, reports, specimen lists, and transcriptions of ethnographic interviews. These records are almost entirely duplicated on microfilm in GR-2809 Research notes of Wilson Duff, but the arrangement has changed significantly. Please see file descriptions or finding aid for cross-references between the microfilm and the originals.

The series consists of operational records of the Department of Anthropology at the British Columbia Provincial Museum and it's predecessor, the Provincial Museum of Natural History and Anthropology. The records are often referred to as the Wilson Duff Papers, as a significant portion of the series consists of original research notes made by Duff, curator of Anthropology at the museum from 1980-1965, in the course of his work with Indigenous communities in British Columbia. Some field notes of other museum anthropologists are also included, as well as correspondence, subject files, and records relating to totem poles in British Columbia.

Staff of the Department of Anthropology conducted research work documenting the history, culture, and languages of Indigenous communities in British Columbia. Records include field notes, maps, transcripts of interviews, correspondence, subject files, and copies of published and unpublished works.

British Columbia Provincial Museum

Totem poles 1950-1975

Sub-series consists of Department of Anthropology records relating to totem poles, including historic totem poles, the preservation and restoration of totem poles, projects for creating new poles, inventories, illustrations, and files on carvers.

Administrative records and correspondence

Sub-series consists of correspondence and other records created by the Department of Anthropology at the Provincial Museum of British Columbia and it's predecessor. The records document the operations of the department including artifact collecting, ethnology and linguistic research, special projects, and publications. Correspondents include Wilson Duff, Francis Kermode, Ian MacTaggart Cowan, W.A. Newcombe, Clifford Carl, A.E. Pickford, Betty C. Newton, Michael Kew, Donald Abbott, Diane MacEachern, Peter Macnair, John H. Smyly, and more.

Ethnology field notes

Sub-series consists of field notes taken predominantly by Peter Macnair, Curator of Ethnology at the Provincial Museum of British Columbia and it's predecessors. Macnair was invited to attend Kwakwaka'wakw ceremonies in Alert Bay and Coast Salish winter ceremonies in Saanich. These ceremonies are considered sacred and private, and his notes were taken with the understanding that they would not be shared with the public. The records comprise field notebooks describing the ceremonies and transcriptions of interviews.

Subject files 1945-1968

Sub-series consists of subject files maintained by the Department of Anthropology at the Provincial Museum of British Columbia and it's predecessors. Records include newsletters, reports, copies of committee notes, ephemera, and records relating to the construction of a new museum building.
