This series contains the records of the Gold Commissioner, Government Agent, and Assistant Land Commissioner, Cariboo District (Quesnel). The records consist of lot registers, certificates of purchase, certificates of pre-emption, registers of pre-emptions (canceled and allowed), registers of land applications and lands purchased, register of leaves of absence granted pre-emption on active service, minute books containing lot register of lands along the route of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, and registers of hay and pasture land leases. The series also includes townsite registers for Quesnel, Barkerville, and Wells and lot registers for some townships in the Peace River Block. Volumes 89-98 and 153-158 are oversize.

Files 1-5, Volume 1 are a property ledger for the period 1953-1955; File 6, Volume 1 through File 1, Volume 4 are a property ledger, 1961-1966; and Files 2-4, Volume 4 contain a uniform ledger, 1950-1970.

The whereabouts of the records to which the indexes refer is unknown. Typical entries in the firm index include the style of firm, names of persons composing the firm, and the date of declaration. Entries in the individual index consist of the name of individual, the style of firm of which a member, and the date of declaration.

The fonds consists of records created and acquired by W. Kimball Nichols between 1922 and 1967. The records include records created by his father, W.K. Nichols and consist of contracts, correspondence and reports from 1922 to 1929 of the Eagle Lake Spruce Mills Ltd. in Giscome BC. There is also a photograph showing a forest fire at Giscome BC ca. 1928. This company was managed by W.K. Nichols. The fonds also includes financial records of Beaver Pass Gold Placers of Wells, BC from 1951 to 1967. This gold mine was owned and operated by W. Kimball Nichols and W.E. North.

Cariboo Land District township register

This series consists of one Cariboo Land District township register, for Townships 21 and 39-42.The earliest entries begin in 1913 and the volume was superseded by 1956 (i.e. no further entries were made after 1956). The registers list land in numerical order by Sections within Townships and record the alienation of land from the Crown (by purchase, pre-emption, lease, etc.): information may include the name of the purchaser, dates and numbers of certificates issued (including Crown Grants), dates and amounts of payments, and reference numbers to correspondence files and field books. There is an alphabetical name index in the volume.

Small Debts Court ledger and ledger of advances

The series consists of one ledger that includes both advance and refund information as well as balances from the Barkerville Small Debts Court. The first ten pages of the ledger appear to have been used by the Government Agent in Barkerville, and provide information on cash advances and refunds from 1941 to 1948. Many of the advances were made to police constables, and included in the ledger are several “Authority for Cash Advance” forms addressed to the Government Agent at Barkerville and signed by Sergeant T. R. Baker, who may have been provincial police sergeant Thomas Raymond Baker.

The second half of the ledger includes a list of receipts and disbursements for the Small Debts Court, presumed to be at Barkerville.

Timber inventory in the oil pipeline right-of-way

This series contains an inventory of the mature and immature timber on Crown Land within the confines of the Trans-Mountain Oil Pipe Line Company right-of-way prepared by C.D. Schultz and Co. for Canadian Bechtel Ltd. and submitted to the District Forester, Fort George. Internal evidence suggests that there were originally at least nine more folios to this report.
