Captain George Vancouver

Item consists of a painted portrait of Captain George Vancouver. The portrait is likely a copy based upon one in the British National Portrait Gallery. The portrait was exhibited in Melbourne, Australia, in 1888, among 27 other portraits of great navigators.

Emily Harley Toldervy Lee

The item is a miniature portrait of a young woman wearing a black and white dress, and with a large hat. Written at the top on the back of the portrait is "Emily Harley Toldervy Le[e], London, Eng[land]. Further down is a label with the name spelt slightly differently. Also on the label is a note about hanging the portrait out of the sun to avoid damage. Underneath this is a note in different handwriting possibly saying, "For Ruth Davidson Lee [illegible]".

Portraits of Captain Cook album

The item consists of one album of 143 prints depicting Captain James Cook (1728-1779). Many are repeated reproductions of similar portraits, in a range of sizes and with a variety of accompanying captions. Eleven have been hand coloured. Other prints include scenes from Cook’s travels and death. There is one undated, polychromatic poster announcing “A new and complete edition of Captain Cook’s voyages” published in twelve monthly installments, “illustrated with numerous woodcuts and steel maps with an appendix.” There are also three copies of a biography (obituary?) for Cook; two identical and one with slightly differing text.
