Correspondence outward

The file consists of 7 letters and 4 transcripts of Ogden's outward correspondence from 1831 to 1849. Correspondence is addressed to a variety of recipients, including John Haldane, William F. Tolmie, John McLeod, Donald Ross, and Ogden's son-in-law Archibald McKinlay, as well as several unidentified correspondents. The file also includes an extract from Ogden's letters to Chief Traders Tod and Mansion in 1845. Although described as a holograph, it appears to be in a different hand than Ogden's. Correspondence deals with a variety of private and Company matters.

Transcripts have been placed in a separate folder for conservation purposes. Not all letters have accompanying transcripts. Some transcripts appear to be copied from John McLeod's "Journals and correspondence of John McLeod, Senior, Chief trader, Hudson's Bay Company."

Correspondence outward

The series consists of correspondence from James Douglas to other HBC officials, written between 1832 and 1849 while he was assigned to Fort Vancouver. The first part of the series consists of the original letters (1839 to 1848) while the second part consists of copies or transcripts of original letters (1832 to 1849) obtained from other institutions or individuals.

The letters cover all aspects of life in the Hudson's Bay Company forts including directions sent by Douglas to other Fort officials regarding men, equipment and farm operations; trading, exploration and relations with the Indigenous people; news and politics.

Correspondence outward

File consists of letters written by John Work. Envelopes have wax seals with John Work's initials. All original letters were written to Edward Ermatinger in St Thomas, Upper Canada from Work while he was in Colvile (Colville), Flat Heads, Columbia River, aboard the Steamer Beaver, Fort Simpson, Nisqually, Fort Vancouver, and Fort Victoria. There is one photostat copy of a letter to John McLeod.

Journal of voyage from Vancouver to Walla Walla and back, 1849

The file consists of several sheets of paper stapled together. They appear to have been removed from a bound volume. The journal documents Lowe's voyage from Fort Vancouver to Walla Walla, Washington between August and September 1849. Lowe subsequently made a note at the end dated San Francisco, 22 March 1853.

Dunvegan : accounts, outfits

The item consists of an account book kept at Fort Dunvegan between 1848 and 1850. It contains the annual outfit inventories of stores and supplies; lists of sundries supplied to various forts, districts and expeditions; accounts with individuals and fur packing accounts.

Kenneth McDonald correspondence outward

The file consists of four letters written by Kenneth McDonald to his brother-in-law, Horatio Nelson Calder, between the years 1843 and 1850. The letters were written at Red River.

Horatio Nelson Calder was married to Nancy Budd. Her niece, also Nancy Budd, married Michael Wren. Their son, Charles Wren, married Elizabeth Ross, daughter of Charles and Isabella (Mainville) Ross.

Amelia Taylor correspondence outward

The file consists of one letter written by Amelia Taylor to her uncle Horatio Nelson Calder. The letter was written at the Red River Settlement in July 1850. The contents of the letter are largely personal, and include information about her children and sisters.

Journal kept at Fort Vancouver, Columbia River

The file consists of a three volume journal kept by Thomas Lowe at Fort Vancouver between 15 June 1843 and 8 April 1850. Lowe records day-to-day activities, the weather, and the comings and goings of numerous Hudson's Bay Company employees. Volume 2 was written on loose-leaf paper. It is quite difficult to read in spots, owing to Lowe's use of pencil rather than ink. During this period, Lowe journeyed from Fort Vancouver to York Factory; entries from these trips were kept in separate journals.

Volume 1 covers the period 15 June 1843 to 5 January 1846, volume 2 covers 6 January 1846 to 1 November 1846, and volume 3 consists of two parts that cover 1 November 1846 to 20 March 1848 and 17 November 1849 to 8 April 1850.

The three volumes are housed separately in different file folders.

Claims of employees at Fort Nisqually

The item is a four page handwritten list of land claims of the employees of the Puget Sound Agricultural Company. The list may have been drawn up around 1850 in order to establish their rights to land that passed from British to American control after the Oregon Treaty of 1846.

Abstract of valuation of the buildings and other improvements at the Puget Sound Company's Establishments

The item is a typescript copy of an abstract of valuation of the buildings and other improvements at the Puget Sound Agricultural Company's establishments at Cowlitz and Fort Nisqually. The valuation may have been drawn up around 1850 in order to establish the company's right to compensation for any land and buildings that passed from British to American control after the Oregon Treaty of 1846. The abstract also contains evaluations for buildings and improvements at Fort Vancouver, Fort Colvile, Okanagon and Fort Nez Perce.

Thomas Lowe, account book, Columbia Department

The file consists of an account book kept by Thomas Lowe in the Columbia Department between 1842 and 1850. The volume appears to be a ledger, but the ink has faded to such a degree that it is nearly completely illegible.

Land office blotter

The item is a volume titled land office blotter. Blotters were used to record detailed trading activity. Only one page has been used. The page describes two financial transactions with the Hudson's Bay Company.

The first transaction relates to 200 pound sterling received from James Cooper, Master of the Hudson's Bay Company ship Columbia, as a deposit on a land purchase in September 1849.

The next relates to the trade of 535 blankets on the 6th of May, 1850. The blankets were paid to several Indigenous groups "for purchase of their lands as per details in Register of Land Purchases", also known as the Douglas Treaties. The names, transcribed directly from the blotter, are: Tee-chamitsa, Kosampsom, Swenghung, Chilcowitch, Whyomilth, Checonein, Kakyaakan, Chewhaytsun, and Soak.

This record was likely created by James Douglas, as it appears to be written in his handwriting [see Wilson Duff, "The Fort Victoria Treaties", BC Studies No. 3 (Fall 1969): 8].

William Fraser Tolmie correspondence outward

The file consists of one letter written by Tolmie to Charles Wren in 1850. The letter was written at Fort Nisqually and gives written notice to Wren that he is trespassing on the lands of the Puget Sound Agricultural Company.

Charles Wren was the son-in-law of Charles Ross and Isabella Mainville.

Private Account Journal

Journal consists of James Douglas’ financial records, prayers, list of his deceased children, and copied down letters he sent to his daughter Martha Douglas.

Letter to the Commanding Officer at Fort Simpson

The item is a letter to the Commanding Officer at Fort Simpson, dated November 21, 1851 from William Rowland, Master of the Sloop Georgiana, while shipwrecked on Queen Charlotte's Island (Haida Gwaii). It includes a copy of the invoice of goods supplied by the Hudson's Bay Company paid to the Haida for the ransom of the crew and passengers.
