Map shewing land proposed to be granted to the Dominion Government in Lieu of Alienated Lands in the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway Belt

Item is a map showing Vancouver Island with details showing the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway Grant and lands proposed to be given to the Dominion Government, Possibly produced in the second decade of the 20th century. The detailed section shows a portion of land between Seymour Narrows and Crown Mountain.

The item is a timber cruiser's logbook, apparently owned by Donald Alexander McPhee. The book contains sketch maps of Victoria Lumber and Manufacturing Company lots in the Cowichan and other South Vancouver Island districts with timber types noted.

There are notes on the fur trade, early Vancouver Island, the Cariboo gold rush, Sir James Douglas, confederation and the Canadian Pacific Railway; and on Louis Riel and the Metis rebellions.

Bill of lading and land receipt

The file consists of two items: a bill of lading for the steamer Beaver, under Captain William Brotchie, to ship goods from Fort Nisqually to Camosun, dated 20 June 1843 and a receipt from the Vancouver Island Colonial Surveyor for 98 acres of land in Cowichan district, 1858.

Henry Labouchere, first Baron Taunton was born in 1798, obtained his early education at Winchester and received a B.A. from Christ Church, Oxford in 1821. In 1828 he received his M.A. He was first elected as a liberal Member of Parliament in 1826 and served in a variety of posts including Lord of the Admiralty (1832); Master of the Mint, privy councillor, and Vice-President of the Board of Trade (1835); and Undersecretary of War and the Colonies (1839). He was appointed President of the Board of Trade in Lord Melbourne's cabinet, 1939-1841, and served in the same capacity under Lord John Russell's ministry, 1847-1852. He became Secretary of State for the Colonies under Lord Palmerston from 1855-1858 and it is to this period of his career that this collection of papers pertains.

Vancouver Island Supreme Court of Civil Justice bench book

Series consists of one bench book for Colony of Vancouver Island Supreme Court of Civil Justice civil and criminal cases heard by Judge David Cameron at Fort Victoria from November 1853 to January 1856 and one criminal case at Nanaimo in May 1854. It also includes civil cases heard at Victoria in the Inferior Court of Civil Justice in 1856. The volume additionally served as a criminal record book for 1853, a cause book for 1856, and a Registrar's record book for 1853. It opens with a notation that Judge Cameron's commission was read and that he took his seat on 6 October 1853. The Registrar also notes that he received the court seal from Judge Cameron.

Register of land purchases from Indians

The series consists of a register of land purchases from Indigenous peoples on Southern Vancouver Island (near Fort Victoria), 1850-1852; record of agreements with Indigenous peoples at Fort Rupert, 1851, and Nanaimo, 1854. These conveyances or agreements are often referred to as the Fort Victoria treaties, Vancouver Island treaties, or Douglas treaties.

The following is a list of the signatory groups, as they were named in the treaties, and their present-day community names. The names are listed in the order the treaties were signed.

Included with these records, but not part of the HBC agreements, are two land purchase agreements made between Vancouver Island Government Agent William Banfield and two Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations in 1859 and 1860, as well as a list with the male adult population of tribes of the southwest coast of Vancouver Island compiled by Banfield.

Copies of Admiralty correspondence related to British Columbia

This series consists of 125 pages of typescript copies of correspondence. The pages are numbered 98-223, and the location of pages 1-97 is unknown. The originals were created between 1858 and 1861. The correspondence is between various members of the British Admiralty, or between the Admiralty and government officials from the colony of Vancouver Island.

The correspondence relates to topics such as: the construction of the Esquimalt navy base, powder magazine and lighthouses on Southern Vancouver Island; the deployment of Royal Marines, Royal Engineers, ships and gun boats to and around Vancouver Island; fights between various First Nations groups and conflicts between Indigenous Peoples and settlers at Victoria, Nanaimo, Fort Rupert [Port Hardy] and Haida Gwaii.

Journals

The series consists of four volumes of journals (4 vols.) describing Daniel Mainguy's activities.
Volume 1: voyage from England around Cape Horn to Vancouver Island from January to April 1863. Life at Chemainus and a visit to Victoria, January 1-14, 1869; departure from Victoria and return to England via San Francisco and New York and the first part of a lengthy visit in England, November 1876 to June 1877.
Volumes 2-3: activities in England, July 1877 to August 1878, including visits to the Channel Islands and France, return to Vancouver Island via Halifax and the U.S. from August to November 1878.
Volume 3: work on the CPR in the Fraser Canyon July 1882 to October 1883 and work as a constable at Chemainus from October to November 1884.
Volume 4: contains humorous accounts by others of a visit by Mainguy to Leamington in 1878, a stay in Halifax in 1878, and a trip from Drynoch to Spences Bridge at Christmas 1882.

Scrip book no. 1

The item is a script and claim book for the lower mainland area. The left hand side of each page in the volume lists the issuance of script including entry number, acreage, date, person to whom script was issued and nature of work done. The right hand side of each page lists land claims including entry number, acreage, date, person and situation of land. There are also loose pages listing Vancouver Island claims.
