Photographs and other graphic material

The series consists primarily of graphic materials belonging to B.W. Pearse and Sarah Jane Pearse. Two of the files are albums, which belonged to B.W. Pearse and his signature on the inside cover. The photograph album (MS-3281.2) contains several Frederick Dally prints. The other graphic materials in this series consist of an engraved steel printing plate with the portrait and signature of B.W. Pearse and a collection of photographs that most likely belonged to Sarah Jane Pearse.

[Art album]

The item consists of one album inscribed “B.W. Pearse, Fernwood, Victoria, British Columbia, 1860.” The album contains a collection of artistic works, some of which are initialed and dated by Pearse. Among Pearse’s original work is a sketch in sepia inscribed “Comox, B.W.P., 1852.” The album includes several English botanical miniatures, pencil drawings likely by G. Copeland (1835 exhibitor, Royal Academy), and one water colour signed “E.T. Coleman” and inscribed on mount “Indian Graves at Yale, Br. Columbia.”

The album also contains 27 b&w albumen prints, all of which include hand-written captions (likely by Pearse) or titles printed on the photograph. The photographs are primarily of Warwick, England, and some other locations in England.

Seven engravings (prints) taken from “The Holy Bible With Explanatory Notes, Practical Observations and Copious Marginal References, by the Rev. Thomas Scott. Vol. 2.” (1845) were kept in the front of the album. These have been placed in a file folder within the same box.

Three prints relating to the Klondike published in The Illustrated London News (September 11, 1897) were stored at the back of the album. These have been removed and placed in a file folder within the same box.

Photograph album

The item consists of a photograph album that belonged to B.W. Pearse. The front page is inscribed "B.W. Pearse, Fernwood, Victoria, British Columbia, 1860.” The album contains 55 b&w photographs collected by Pearse that primarily depict Yale, the Fraser River, areas around the Thompson River, and views of Victoria. Several of the photographs are by Frederick Dally. Pages are numbered and nearly every photograph has a caption.

Item consists of one engraved metal printing plate, with a portrait of B.W. Pearse and his signature below. The portrait was published by the S.G. Clark Publishing Company of British Columbia, and engraved by E.G. Williams & Bro. of New York. The original envelope is included in the file.

Sarah Jane Pearse photographs

File consists of 52 photographic prints, primarily depicting the Pearses' Fernwood estate and their cottage, located at McNeill Bay. The photographs are principally of Sarah Jane Pearse, and based on the date of creation of most of the photographs, likely comprised her personal collection. Also included in this file are several cartes de visite, most of which are unidentified.

Sketchbook with sketches done in England

File consists of one sketchbook that belonged to B.W. Pearse. The sketchbook is a hardcover folder, with an expanding file on the left side and a pencil loop along the spine. The folder contains 9 sketches (graphite) by B.W. Pearse of scenes and buildings in England, as well as 1 painting by B.W. Pearse. There are also two blank pages.

Item consists of one album consisting of 140 carte de visite portrait photographs. Many of the individuals are identified. A loose photograph of Sarah Jane Pearse's carriage is filed with the album.

Item consists of one album containing 72 carte de visite portrait photographs. Individuals are not identified in the album, but the following have been identified by staff: Mrs. J.D. Pemberton; Barbara Thompson; N. Lindley; M.L Pemberton; J.D. Pemberton; Pemberton sisters.

Series consists of personal records belonging to B.W. Pearse and Sarah Jane Pearse. The series consists of B.W. Pearse's copy of Dispatches and Correspondence Transmitted to the House of Assembly in Governor Douglas' Message of 3 September 1863 (signed by B.W. Pearse), Pearse estate records, and some miscellaneous records belonging to Sarah Jane Pearse, including corredpondence.
