The file consists of a report written by James Deans regarding evidence of early habitation on the southeastern part of Vancouver Island. The last page of the report includes several rough pencil sketches of artifacts found by Deans elsewhere on Vancouver Island in 1870 and 1874. Pages 21, 22, 25 and 26 of the report are missing.

Television shorts. Television spot featuring an archaeological dig in the Port Alberni area. Located near one of MacMillan Bloedel's mills, the dig was carried out with the company's financial support, under the direction of Denis St. Claire. Archaeologists are seen at their various tasks in the excavation, documenting artifacts, etc. The site appears to relate to the whaling tradition of the West Coast people.

This film shows what is being done, with National Housing Act assistance, to build planned communities in parts of mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island, and to initiate various forms of urban development and renewal.

Film highlights construction of Port Alberni sawmill, 1934-1935, from an empty site to an operating plant, and arrival in spring 1935 of the "Rio Dorado", the first ship to load at the company dock. Also includes footage of boat trip to Great Central and scenes in and around the Great Central townsite; the steamship "Princess Maquinna" is shown en route. B.S.&W. personnel shown and named in the film include E.P. Demens, J.H. Bloedel ["J.H.B."], and J.W. Stewart.

Industrial film. BC Packers (Western Canadian Whaling Ltd.) whaling operations, based at Coal Harbour. Whaling ship departs; whale is sighted and harpooned; whale struggles and dies. Flensing and processing of whale carcass at Coal Harbour -- products are frozen ground whale meat and mink feed. Sequence on preparation of harpoons, followed by another whaling trip aboard the "Polar V". Several sequences appear to be in slow motion.

Newsreel. Eleven stories from around the world, including three from British Columbia. The eighth story, entitled "Rodeo: Cowboy's Holiday -- Wild and Western," shows bronco and Brahma bull riding at the Cloverdale holiday rodeo. The ninth, "Indian Regatta: West Coast Tribes Vie in War Canoes," shows native Canadians competing in the annual war canoe races at Esquimalt; the Chemainus team wins. The tenth, "End of Era: Timber Festival Marks End of Logging Trains," shows the shutting down of the logging railway at MacMillan & Bloedel's Franklin River operation. The train, pulled by a steam locomotive, is shown loading and dumping logs, and its replacement -- the logging truck -- goes to work.
