Outfit statement and invoice

The file consists of various documents created at Fort Alexandria in 1850-1852 and 1861. It includes unbound ledger sheets listing the Fort Alexandria outfit returns, book debts, inventory of merchandise, a requisition list and servants private orders. There is also an invoice of sundry merchandise supplied to the fort in 1861.

Account book

The item is an account book created at Fort Connolly in 1868. It contains details of servants advances, labour account, Fort expenses, rations accounts and outfit details.

Calumet Journal

File consists of one unbound journal from Calumet Farm kept by William Manson between April 17 and July 31, 1860. Calumet Farm was a created as a farming outpost for Fort Kamloops.

Extracts from Day Book - Ledger

File consists of two transcription copies of extracts from the day book-ledger of the Hudson's Bay Company Trading Post at Fort Kamloops from between 1863 and 1864.

The item is a photocopy of an 1856 list of servants at Fort Langley. Some names have comments written next to them regarding their rate of pay or other particulars.

Correspondence outward : W.F. Tolmie

The file consists of letters outward written by W.F. Tolmie at Fort Nisqually between 1853 and 1858. The letters (mostly transcripts) are to various HBC forts and to William Sinclair of the nearby Puget Sound Agricultural Company and relate to activities in and around the Fort and relations with the Americans and the local Indigenous community. There is also a letter to the Governor of Washington Territory, Fayette McMullen, dated January 12, 1858 making an application for clemency on behalf of an Indigenous man named Leschi.

In addition, there is an unfolded envelope addressed to Tolmie from William Sinclair dated April 20, 1848 but the letter is no longer attached.

Letter to the Commanding Officer at Fort Simpson

The item is a letter to the Commanding Officer at Fort Simpson, dated November 21, 1851 from William Rowland, Master of the Sloop Georgiana, while shipwrecked on Queen Charlotte's Island (Haida Gwaii). It includes a copy of the invoice of goods supplied by the Hudson's Bay Company paid to the Haida for the ransom of the crew and passengers.

Journal

The file contains loose ledge pages containing a brief daily journal. Entries appear to be in two different hands and on the fourth page, the page begins with the header "Stuarts Lake Journal" and all entries may be from Stuart Lake post. The entries document events like weather and daily activities. Individuals mentioned include Michel Lacroix, Tomma, and Michel Deschamp. The two last pages contain lists of places (Thomasson River, New Caledonia British Columbia, Stuarts Lake) and the name Charles G. Ogden.

Accounts and private orders of people attached to H.B.C post

The file contains lists of accounts of individuals associated with the post. The pages are mostly loose ledger pages, although some have maintained a semblance of binding. The accounts are written by a number of different hands and the file appears to pull together pages from various different account books. On most pages, the name of the individual is listed at the top of the page.

Expenses of leather trip

The file contains two documents, each detailing expenditures during leather trips from Stuarts Lake. The first document, dated 1869, is titled "Provisions expended during trip to and from R.M. Portage 6 men and clerk." The second document is not dated but also provides a list of expenses for a leather trip from Stuarts Lake.

Packing account : Babine Portage and Stuarts Lake

File contains lists of supplies. The first page is a list of supplies at Babine Portage, June 11, 1866, and the second page is furs received from Mr. Hamilton from the Babine Portage. The remaining pages (10) are Stuarts Lake packing accounts.

Correspondence outward

The series consists of correspondence outward written by Dugald Mactavish between 1854 and 1858 from Vancouver, Washington Territory. The letters are a mixture of original records and transcript copies from other sources. They are mostly written to W.F. Tolmie at Fort Nisqually and to Henry Peers or William Sinclair at Cowlitz Farm. The letters are primarily concerned with the sale and transport of goods between various forts but also touch on local events and news.

Letter from H.H. Berens to James Douglas

The item is a letter to Governor James Douglas at Fort Victoria written by H.H. Berens, Agent of the Puget Sound Agricultural Company at Hudson's Bay House in London, on June 11, 1862. The letter states that the company is not interested in purchasing Douglas' shares in the PSAC and giving Douglas the authority to dispose of them as he pleases.

Journal of expedition to the North, 1859

The file consists of both the abstract and the report Torrens sent to James Douglas in 1859 regarding his trip to Haida Gwaii and inland along the Nass River. The trip took place between 1 July to mid October 1859. The report mentions interactions with the local Indigenous population on Haida Gwaii. Several Indigenous men are named, including Naskilkengans, Nestacana, Mr. Charles, Tatsai, and Kitkuhn. Naskilkengans and Nestacana appear to have been from the Skidegate area; the home village of the other men is not provided. Torrens also writes at length about the geological composition of northern British Columbia, including along the Nass River and on Haida Gwaii. He also includes his general impressions of the Indigenous peoples that his expedition met.

Torrens's abstract includes a daily assessment of the weather and general remarks.

Report of explorations and proceedings at Clayoquot Sound

The file contains two reports written in 1865 by Torrens and sent to the Honourable William A. G. Young, Colonial Secretary. The first report was written in August 1865 and describes his trip to Bear River, which was cut short. The second report is dated September 1865 and provides lengthy detail about Torrens's trip to Nootka Sound and Friendly Cove following the aborted trip to Bear River. Torrens writes at length about the geography, geology, flora and fauna of the area and provides a detailed description of the trip.

In his September report, Torrens makes several comments on the Indigenous peoples and villages that his expedition encountered, including the villages of Maktassis on Flores Island (likely Marktosis/Maaqtusiis), Oupinit (likely Openit), Ouchucklesit, Sleeptic, and Tsumakose near Refuge Cove, the latter noted as being a village site for the Manahoussat people. Torrens also met with Imharp, whom he names as the chief of the Mowachaht peoples. Torrens attached several appendices to his report, including a vocabulary, a story he has entitled "Indian Superstitions" and a list of the villages of the Mowachaht, Muchalaht, Nuchatlaht, Ehattesaht (ʔiiḥatis), Kyuquot (Ka:'yu:'k't'h'), Cheklesath (Che:k:tles7et'h') and Cla-issat First Nations.

Excerpts and notes of expedition to the North, 1859

The file consists of two copies of a typed transcript of notes detailing Torrens' 1859 trip. The excerpts are dated between 1 July to 31 August 1859, with a single-line entry from 1 October 1859. The covering page is entitled "Nass Dialect" and includes a list of words in Nisga'a and English, including numbers 1-20.

Correspondence

The file consists of both original and photostat copies of correspondence written by James Anderson between 1854 and 1859. Correspondence is both personal and professional in nature. The majority of the correspondence is addressed to Sir George Simpson, although the file also includes letters to Anderson's brother, Alexander Caulfield Anderson, and to a number of other HBC employees.

The photostats appear to have been made of pages 284 to 308 of a letterbook written while Anderson was at Lake Simcoe between December 1858 and November 1859.

Outward correspondence

The series consists of correspondence sent by Paul Fraser in 1852 and 1853 to a number of correspondents, including James Douglas, Eden Colville, and James Yale. Correspondence deals with Hudson's Bay Company and other business or travel matters.

The file consists of correspondence sent to Paul Fraser by a variety of correspondents. The first four pages of one letter are missing. Much of the correspondence is personal in nature, and senders include Fraser's nephews A.G. Fraser and Hugh Fraser, and his brother Alexander.
