Journal of Clallum [Clallam] expedition from Fort Vancouver

The file consists of Ermatinger's 1828 journal detailing the so-called Clallam expedition from Fort Vancouver under the command of Alexander McLeod, chief trader at the fort. The punitive expedition, which set out from Fort Vancouver in June 1828, sought revenge for the deaths of Alexander McKenzie and four of his men.

Miscellaneous papers regarding the Puget Sound Agricultural Company

The file consists of various documents relating to the creation and purpose of the Puget Sound Agricultural Company (PSAC) 1839-1852. The file includes an extract of Committee minutes re the PSAC, a list of shareholders, a letter to John McLoughlin from the directors regarding the formation of the company, miscellaneous correspondence and the memorandum of understanding or prospectus of the company.

Autobiography of Roderick Finlayson

The file consists of one bound volume written by Finlayson in 1891. Several pages appear to have been torn out of the front of the book; however, it is unlikely that these pages contained any substantive information as the biography appears to be complete. The biography covers the period 1837 to 1851 and is 17 pages in length.

History of Vancouver Island and the Northwest Coast / Roderick Finlayson

The file consists of handwritten notes on Finlayson's "The History of Vancouver Island and the Northwest Coast" as well as 2 typed bound manuscripts of Finlayson's work. The notes do not appear to be in Finlayson's hand and may have been made in the 1930s when the manuscript was transcribed. The first copy of the manuscript is 66 pages in length and bears both the Legislative Library stamp of "113118" as well as an "M" number of M-148. The second copy is noted as the "corrected copy" and bears Legislative Library stamp "113119" and M-149.

A xerox copy of these records is also available in this file and is stored in a second volume of the file with the same call number.

Autobiography (transcript)

The file consists of three transcripts of the biography of Roderick Finlayson, which he wrote in 1891. The transcripts are typescript and appear to have been created in the first half of the twentieth century.

Correspondence outward

The file consists of original correspondence written by James Anderson between 1846 and 1849 during his time at Lake Nipigon. The letters are personal in nature and are addressed to his brother, assumed to be Alexander Caulfield Anderson. The earliest pieces of correspondence predate Anderson's 1847 promotion to Chief Trader, and document his disappointment at being passed over for promotion. The letters contain references to events affecting other HBC personnel, including the 1845 suicide of William Glen Rae.

Journal April 3-April 9, 1832 : Moose Factory to Hannah Bay

The file consists of a bound photostat volume of Anderson's journal between April 3 to April 9, 1832. The journal is bound with photostats of inward correspondence (1853-1863), outward correspondence (184-? to 1868) and Anderson's commission as Chief Factor.

Correspondence

The file consists of an original letter written by Francis Ermatinger to John McLeod at York Factory in 1828. The file also consists of a typed transcript of the letter, as well as a photostat copy of a letter written in 1843 from Ermatinger to Angus McDonald.

Papers of Edward Ermatinger

The file consists of one bound volume of typescript photostats of correspondence addressed to Edward Ermatinger between 1826 and 1874. The majority of the letters in this volume are from John Tod, although it also includes correspondence from John McLoughlin (correspondence dates 1834-1846), David McLoughlin (1829), George Barnston (1858), Peter C. Pambrun (1858), W. Sinclair (1831-1835), George Gladman (1840-1845), Thomas Dears (1829-1834) and Robert S. Miles (1833-1859). Many of the letters included in this volume appear to be included on the microfilm in file MS-2716.

Letters to Edward Ermatinger

The file consists of one bound volume of transcripts of correspondence sent to Edward Ermatinger between 1828 and 1856. Senders include Archibald McDonald, Jane Klyne McDonald, William Todd, and John Work. The volume includes a note by W. Kaye Lamb dated 18 October 1938 that indicates that there are "many inaccuracies in these transcripts. For specific questions consult original letters when in Archives."

All of the letters included in this volume are held by the BC Archives. Letters from Archibald McDonald are found in file A/B/40/142, those from Jane Klyne McDonald are found in file A/C/40/M143, those from William Todd are in A/B/40/T56, and those from John Work are found primarily in file A/B/40/W89 (PR-1506) with some in file A/C/40/W89.

The file consists of one original letter written to Sir James Douglas by Finlayson in 1844, as well as 2 typed transcripts. The letter regards the death of Charles Ross. Finlayson writes that Ross died without a will, but that he gave Finlayson instructions on the disposal of his estate prior to his death.

Correspondence from Archibald MacDonald

The file consists of several letters written to Edward Ermatinger by Archibald McDonald between 1830 and 1846. Early correspondence refers to the Clallam campaign, in which Ermatinger's brother Francis took part. All letters in this file are original with the exception of one dated 15 January 1832.

The file consists of 7 letters and 4 transcripts of Ogden's outward correspondence from 1831 to 1849. Correspondence is addressed to a variety of recipients, including John Haldane, William F. Tolmie, John McLeod, Donald Ross, and Ogden's son-in-law Archibald McKinlay, as well as several unidentified correspondents. The file also includes an extract from Ogden's letters to Chief Traders Tod and Mansion in 1845. Although described as a holograph, it appears to be in a different hand than Ogden's. Correspondence deals with a variety of private and Company matters.

Transcripts have been placed in a separate folder for conservation purposes. Not all letters have accompanying transcripts. Some transcripts appear to be copied from John McLeod's "Journals and correspondence of John McLeod, Senior, Chief trader, Hudson's Bay Company."

Ogden, Peter Skene, 1794-1854

Appointments as Chief Trader and Chief Factor

The file consists of the original documents appointing Peter Skene Ogden as Chief Trader and Chief Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company. Ogden was appointed Chief Trader in 1824 and as Chief Factor in 1835. The file also includes 2 photostats of the original records; these have been placed in a separate folder.

The file consists of one letter written by Peter Skene Ogden's son, Peter Ogden, to Donald Manson in 1847. The letter provides details of Ogden's life at Fraser's Lake.

The file consists of both original and typed transcripts of two letters written by Charles Ross. The first is dated October 1 1842 and was written at Fort McLoughlin to Sir Charles Simpson. The second was written at Fort Victoria in January 1844 and was sent to Donald Ross.The letter to Simpson refers to a list of "words and phrases to be translated into the language of those Indian tribes to which I have access." Ross indicates that the list - which is not included in this letter - was translated into the language of the "Billbillah" and "Bellwhoolah" tribes. There is some suggestion that this refers to the Bella Bella and the Bella Coola, or the Heiltsuk and Nuxalk peoples, respectively. Ross also provides a rough population count for each group.

Correspondence inward

The file consists of one original letter from Sir George Simpson to Charles Ross, dated at Red River Settlement 20 June 1844. The letter is personal in nature. Simpson makes passing reference to the Indigenous population near Fort Victoria, and also the "Quakiolths" (likely the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw or Kwakiutl peoples) in Johnston Strait, and makes several comments on Ross's family, friends, and finances.

The file consists of an original copy of a letter sent by Isabella (Mainville) Ross to James Douglas in 1860. There are also two typed transcripts included in the file. The letter was written inquiring about the financial state of her husband Charles Ross's affairs at the time of his death.

File consists of letters written by John Work. Envelopes have wax seals with John Work's initials. All original letters were written to Edward Ermatinger in St Thomas, Upper Canada from Work while he was in Colvile (Colville), Flat Heads, Columbia River, aboard the Steamer Beaver, Fort Simpson, Nisqually, Fort Vancouver, and Fort Victoria. There is one photostat copy of a letter to John McLeod.

Outfit statement and invoice

The file consists of various documents created at Fort Alexandria in 1850-1852 and 1861. It includes unbound ledger sheets listing the Fort Alexandria outfit returns, book debts, inventory of merchandise, a requisition list and servants private orders. There is also an invoice of sundry merchandise supplied to the fort in 1861.
