Lea Gillard's diary

The file consists of a small handwritten diary that was written by Lea Gillard, a United Church minister who worked about a coastal missionary boat, the Sky Pilot, in the 1930s and 1940s. The diary starts in 1935 and ends in 1939. The diary captures life aboard the boat that operated up and down the eastern coast of Vancouver Island. Gillard records day-to-day activities on the boat, such as ministering to the communities along the coast, dealing with repairs and maintenance of the boat, the weather, social events and family life.

Alongside the diary is a typed transcript that was done by the donor in 2022. This not only is a typed version of the diary, but also includes additional notes about Reverend Gillard as well as some photos.

Nellie Isabel (Burnham) Gosnell family history

File consists of a black and white photographic print, presumably of Nellie Isabel Gosnell as a young woman and a two page typewritten history of the Chapman, Burnham, and Gosnell families. It provides family trees and recounts the movements of these families as they settled and became established in Cobble Hill and Victoria in the late 19th and early twentieth century. The history was written by Nellie Gosnell's daughter, Margaret (Gosnell) Taylor.

Cariboo gold rush records

File consists of textual records including licenses to sell liquor, free miners certificates, receipts for goods purchased, telegraph messages, Royal Engineers discharge papers, a will, correspondence, a list of persons entitled to vote in electoral district of Cariboo, and other records created between 1863 and 1885. They are generally related to the Cariboo region, especially Richfield, Barkerville, Quesnel, William Creek, and Yale.

The London Gazette Extraordinary

The item consists of one sheet marked "Copy - The London Gazette Extraordinary." The sheet was published at Whitehall on August 5, 1790. The sheet includes a translation of a declaration by the Comte de Florida Blanca regarding the capture of certain vessels belonging to his subjects in the Port of Nootka.

Photos of Ogden Point construction

The file consists of 14 black and white photographs showing the construction of the Ogden Point grain elevator in Victoria, BC. The photos were taken in 1927 and 1928. Most of the photographs have a stamp from that of Victoria photographer Harold Fleming. Many are also dated. The photos show the area around Ogden Point and show the pier as well as the construction of the grain elevator building.

Included in the accession is a fairly worn envelope that presumably had housed the photos at one point. The address on the envelope is that of Harold Fleming Esq., 1014 Government Street, Victoria. The return address is that of D.P.W., Box 920, Victoria. On the envelope is a handwritten note in black ink that says Dad's engineering pictures.

Walter Byron McMicking commemorative certificates

File consists of two oversized certificates presented to Walter Byron McMicking (1879-1960): (1) by the Firemen's Benevolent Society, Victoria on February 28, 1930 and (2) by the Mason's Britannia Lodge No. 73, New Westminster on December 11, 1930. Walter was the son of Robert Burns McMicking and Margaret (Leighton) McMicking.

Photographs of surveys in the Northern Interior

The file consists of 21 photographs showing survey work in the Northern Interior region of British Columbia, primarily in the Nechako Region. The majority of the photographs are identified with captions (see file list below). The photographs show the routine work of surveyors, but are not surveying photographs.

Album : Blankenbach photographs

The file consists of a photograph compiled by the Frederick and Alice Blankenbach family during their time at "Westward Ho" at the corner of Cadboro Bay and Telegraph Bay Road in Oak Bay, B.C. The album contains photographs of the Blankenbach family and friends, their homes and neighbourhoods, taken between ca. 1902 and 1905.

Photos of Prince Rupert and Nanaimo

The file consists of 15 black and white photos taken in Prince Rupert and Nanaimo in the 1940s. They appear to have been taken by a few different unknown photographers, though one photograph was taken by William Walker Wrathall, a Prince Rupert photographer. Some of the photographs have titles handwritten in French, while others are printed in English.

Bill of sale between Jean Caux and James Reid

The file consists of a copy of a bill of sale between Jean Caux (Cataline) and James Reid of Quesnellemouth. The bill of sale is dated at Quesnellemouth 2 June 1888. The record clearly formed part of a larger court file originally, as W.A. Johnston, J.P. has noted "A - This is the paper writing referred to in the annex and affidavit of John Stephenson."

The record was found in collection and was separated from its original file.

Land Registry office receipt

The file consists of one receipt issued by the Land Registry Office in 1866. It relates to subdivisions 1, 7 and 8, lot 21, Spring Ridge, Victoria District. This land was owned by Honore Passerard.

Francisco Marescal notes

The file consists of one page of notes regarding two agreements involving Francisco Marescal. The first is between Marescal and H.A. Messenger and is in regards to a ten-year lease dated April 2 1875 for the north half of the northwest quarter and the south east quarter of the northwest quarter of section 7, township 4, north of range 11 east. The second note regards a patent between the United States and Marescal dated September 9, 1881. It was recorded December 10, 1881 and is for the franctional northwest quarter of section 7 in township 4 north of range 11 east.

Health Insurance Commission Reports

The series consists of two reports created by the Health Insurance Commission in 1938 investigating medical insurance in British Columbia. The first report is titled Industrial Medical Services Plans and Health Insurance in British Columbia by H B Garland and dated March 1938. The other report is titled Health Insurance for Rural Municipalities by D K Bell and dated May 1938.

George Marchant naval records

File contains naval service records of George Marchant. The records consist of Marchant's certificate of service in the Royal Navy; his certificate of continuous service; and a certificate of service as master of a steamship in the coasting trade (1884) with an accompanying memorandum (1914) and correspondence (1916).

Goodbody correspondence re Queen Victoria's handwriting

The file contains one piece of correspondence and one envelope. The items relate to each other only in subject matter. The correspondence, written by William Goodbody to Mr. Mortimer in 1876 from Betchworth, UK, indicates that a sample of Queen Victoria's handwriting is included. Found with the correspondence is an envelope, stamped with Provincial Library and Archives, Victoria, B.C. Writing on the envelope reads: "Sample of Queen Victoria's writing - on House of Lords stationery." The envelope is empty.

Commemorative album

The file consists of a small homemade commemorative album containing 17 black and white photographs. The album was made to mark a reception for Mr. and Mrs. Gomer P. Jones given by the the staff of the Hedley Gold Mining Co. on September 20, 1915. The occasion was the 50th birthday of Gomer P. Jones and the reception was held at Hedley, B.C.

The album contains a photograph of Mr. and Mrs. Jones and one of Jones and his son, Gomer P. Jones Jr. There are also 15 photographs of the company staff.

Tranquille Sanatorium postcards

File consists of 8 colour postcards depicting Tranquille Sanatorium near Kamloops. Seven of the postcards are published by The Camera Products Company in Vancouver and one is published by Gowen, Sutton Company in Vancouver. All photographs were likely taken by Joseph Frederick Spalding, a photographer based in Vancouver who initially worked for Gowen, Sutton before establishing The Camera Products Company.

Margaret Trenchard child welfare records

The file consists of pamphlets, brochures, booklets, reports, and backgrounders on child welfare. These records appear to have been collected and used by Margaret L. Trenchard. The file covers a variety of child welfare institutions, including the Children's Aid Society, the Bishop Cridge Centre for the Family, and the Canadian Jewish Congress.

Letter regarding Pym Nevins Compton

The file consists of one letter written by H.J. Seaton to his sister, Kitty. Kitty was the widow of Pym Nevins Compton. The letter was written shortly after her husband's death, and regards her plans for sending her son Johnny to England.

Duncan McAulay photographs

File consists of one photograph album (30 b&w photographs and 1 high school certificate, 1889) and 36 loose photographs. Several of the photographs are of unidentified individuals, but the album contains early views of Vancouver and Victoria, as well as views from a train window along the Fraser River.

Address and order book

The item consists of a hardbound “order book” that appears to have been created in about 1914. There is no date written in the volume, but searches in the vital statistics index have turned up records that indicate it was created after April 1914 and prior to November 1914. The volume lists the names and addresses of women, and in many cases, it also lists what goods and services they could supply. Goods include embroidery, fine tatting, knitted garments, crochet hats, china riveting, tortoise shell products, dinner mats, children’s whitewear, and foodstuffs.

The volume may have been created by a local Women’s Institute, and may list women available to assist with fundraising or early war work. The majority of individuals listed lived in the Greater Victoria area, although several lived in the Cowichan Valley and Salt Spring Island.

Letters to Ellen Bonney from Emily Carr and Ira Dilworth

The file consists of two letters and one note written to Ellen Bonney of Ocean Falls from Emily Carr and Ira Dilworth:

Transcripts

The file consists of two typed transcripts that correspond to the oral history audio recordings. The transcripts were created by the BC Forest Service Centenary Society.

[Views of British Columbia photograph album]

The album consists of 65 pages, which contain 58 b&w photographs from various creators, and 5 engravings. The photographs primarily depict scenery throughout British Columbia, as well as some photographs of First Nations people and villages. Many of the photographs appear to have been taken by George Mercer Dawson during Geological Survey of Canada expeditions (1878 and 1879), and are complemented by the Survey reports. However, there are also some photographs by Frederick Dally and by Richard Maynard. When known, the photographers and any identifying information are provided (see the attached list of photographs). Many of the unidentified photographs may be Geological Survey of Canada photographs by Dawson as several are numbered in a similar way.

Retinal Circus handbills

The file consists of eight handbills that advertise concerts at the Retinal Circus, a music club that opened at 1024 Davie Street, Vancouver, in the fall of 1967 and closed in January of 1969. The club hosted a wide range of psychedelic, blues, rock, and rockabilly musical acts, and was known for its psychedelic light shows. The handbills were designed by Steve Seymour.
