143rd Battalion departure

Photograph depicts the 143rd Battalion (B.C. Bantams) aboard the SS Princess Mary on departure day. There were two departures for Bantam soldiers on the same day; one aboard the SS Princess Mary and another aboard the SS Princess Victoria. Some soldiers have climbed the ship's rigging to gain a better view of the crowds who had come to watch the departure. On the left side of the top deck, one of soldiers is carrying Muggins, the Red Cross mascot. The spitz is carrying its Red Cross collection tins on a harness in which people could donate money for the war effort.
