Lou Cumming interview

The item is an audio recording of an interview with Lou Cumming. Louis W. Cumming is the editor of the "Ashcroft Journal", and his family have been connected with the Ashcroft paper for three generations. While the family did not establish the "Journal", Cumming's grandfather and partner bought out the operation in 1912. The family has also been instrumental in starting other newspapers in the Fraser Valley area. Cumming touches upon the early history of Ashcroft, its reason for being, in both wagon and early train days. Special mention is made of the 1916 fire. Speaking strictly of the "Journal", Cumming mentions equipment used, conversion to modern print set and type, and range of subscribers.

Frank Keyes, a legal consultant on copyright to the federal Department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs, describes the current state of copyright law in Canada, particularly as it relates to non-print media.

Victor Nancollas interview

The item is an audio recording of an interview with Victor Nancollas. Nancollas was involved in local Salmon Arm politics for 27 years. He traces the history of incorporation from the separate city and municipality to the amalgamation of the present day district. The topics of public works, emphasizing water and treatment of sewage are discussed, as are the community services such as the library and old age and youth centres. Mill rate with relation to industry is discussed, as is the development of the industries themselves. The one time fruit industry and the present (1977), sawmill and machine shops are all mentioned. He also gives personal views on the value of Regional Districts with special relation to city planning and agricultural land use. The size of the school district, the number of schools and special education facilities (such as schools for the mentally handicapped) are mentioned. He describes the B.C. and Confederation Centennial celebrations that took place in his district.

The item is a typescript copy of a letter from John Stuart at Fort Saint Ain in Saskatchewan, dated September 26, 1826. It is written to James M. Yale and mostly concerns the difficulties faced by the Red River Colony.

The series consists of John Stuart's original journal which runs from December 20, 1805 to February 28, 1806. Stuart wrote the journal at "Rocky Mountains," a reference to Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, where he helped Simon Fraser to reestablish a trading post in the fall of 1805 for the North West Company. The journal details daily life at the fort, including interactions with the local Indigenous population. In particular, Stuart mentions "Beaver Indians," more properly known as the Dane-zaa or Tsattine peoples.

The series consists of a letter book of correspondence outward from Hamilton Moffatt to the Hudson's Bay Company Board of Management in Victoria and various other individuals. The book was kept by Moffatt during his time at several forts and contains details of fort activity.
