Submission to Commission on Forest Resources, 1943

The series consists of two copies of a three volume submission to the Royal Commission on Forestry by the Bureau of Economics and Statistics. It includes a statement showing the amount of timber held under all types of tenure, by individuals and firms in B.C. during 1938 and 1944.

This series consists of records of the 1975 Royal Commission on Forest Resources led by Commissioner Peter H. Pearse. Records include exhibits, transcripts of evidence, correspondence, subject files, working papers, financial records and newspaper clippings.

The finding aid provides an alphabetical listing of exhibits (volumes 1-9), a file list of correspondence and subject files (volumes 10-13), and a file list of working papers (volumes 14-16). Volumes 17 and 18 contain newspaper clippings about the activities of the Commission, volume 19 is a Ledger of accounts and volumes 20 to 28 contain the transcripts of evidence taken at public hearings of the commission. An alphabetical index of participants providing the transcript volume number and page numbers of testimony given is included at the end of the finding aid.

To find briefs of particular participants, researchers are advised to search the alphabetical listing of briefs for the appropriate box number. References to the original numbering of briefs done by the Commission no longer have meaning for retrieval purposes.

This series consists of records of the Commission on Victoria Police Commissioners, 1910. Commissioner Peter S. Lampman was appointed March 24, 1910 to inquire into the actions of the Victoria Police commissioners in response to allegations of corruption. The investigation centered on the actions of the Police Commissioners in regard to bawdy houses and gambling establishments in the Chinatown area.

This series consists of the records of the Commission on Coal, 1921. The records include transcripts of proceedings of hearings, exhibits, Mining engineer, R.G.E. Leckie's report and accountant P.A. Foster's report. Also included is the commissioner's report in which he recommended that the short ton be used in government compilations and all sales, dealers be licensed and required to submit monthly returns, that coal stocks be accumulated during summer months, grading standards be adopted, combines be dissolved, and an effort be made to reduce freight rates on both land and water.

The inquiry was appointed under the Public Inquiries Act by Order-in-Council no. 1466, June 18, 1958, to inquire into the collapse of the bridge on June 17. Sherwood Lett was the Commissioner. Records consist of proceedings, exhibits, and correspondence. The records also include Sanderson, A.B. Report on investigation and two volumes of the Commissioner's report.

This series consists of records of the Commission on the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, 1924. The records consist of letter patent appointing the commissioner, Provincial Secretary's correspondence file Pi 9/24 (which contains the petition requesting the inquiry), transcripts of evidence presented at proceedings and the commissioner's original signed report. Also included are several Provincial Secretary files, 1914, relating to the following railways: Canadian Northern, Canadian Northern Pacific, Kettle Valley, Pacific Great Eastern, and Dolly Varden.

Commissioner Inquiry into the Coquihalla and related highway projects

The series consists of the records created by the Commissioner Inquiry into Coquihalla highway construction costs in 1987. Douglas L. MacKay, a professional engineer, was appointed Commissioner through OIC 1546/1987 to compare the estimates and costs of the Coquihalla Highway; to find reasons and justification for differences between estimates and costs; to examine other recent highway projects where costs may have differed from estimates; to investigate the procedures for costing, administering, and reporting highway projects; and to make recommendations. The Commissioner concluded that the Legislature and the public were deliberately misled about the cost of the Coquihalla Highway Project. The true costs were disguised by falsifying documents and expense account transfers.

The series includes interviews with officials; proceedings and exhibits; briefs and submissions from government, opposition, unions and others; research consultants' files, secretary's files, and reports. Other records include printouts from the Commission Secretary's WP discs which may overlap with some of the files. It also includes drafts and gallery proofs of the final report, including appendixes and figures. Some records relate to the proposed Annacis Island crossing of the Fraser River.

Royal Commission to inquire into the Administration of South Vancouver Municipality (1912)

This series consists of the records of the Royal Commission to Inquire Into the Administration of South Vancouver Municipality, 1912. The commissioner, Vancouver accountant Matthew Joseph Crehan, was appointed on 6 May 1912 to inquire into the affairs of the Municipality of South Vancouver. He investigated the administration of school affairs (purchasing of school sites, supplies, awarding of contracts, etc.) as well as the administration of the departments of the municipal government. Commission records consist of the original signed report, plus copy and five volumes of typewritten transcripts of proceedings.

The Commissioner was appointed by Order in Council 1586/73 to Inquire into (1) the affairs of the Corporation of Surrey involving land transactions and re-zoning applications, and any involvement therein of members of Council, officials or employees since January 1, 1971, (2) whether information gathered in the pursuit of official business was disclosed for private advantage, and (3) any matter affecting the good government of Surrey that may come to the attention of the Inquiry.

Railway Belt and Peace River Block lands dispute records

This series consists of correspondence, memos, notes, reports and agreements accumulated in the course of presenting British Columbia's case to the Commission on Reconveyance of Land to British Columbia. Records were used to receive and inquire into the arguments of the Government of the Province of British Columbia in support of its claim for the reconveyance to the Province by the Government of Canada of the land conveyed by the Province to the Dominion pursuant to paragraph 11 of the Terms of Union and in arriving at the Agreement of Feb. 20, 1930, between Canada and British Columbia on the subject of the transfer of the Railway Belt and the Peace River Block.

Inquiry Into the Administration of Mount View High School

This series consists of the records of the Inquiry Into the Administration of Mount View High School, 1943-1944.

This Inquiry was established by OIC1096 8 July 1943; John Owen Wilson was appointed as sole Commissioner to inquire into the administration of Mount View High School (Saanich), particularly the methods of discipline and alleged excessive corporal punishment. The collection contains correspondence, administrative records, proceedings, exhibits and the inquiry report.

The Inquiry into the Administration of Mount View High School was established under Section 5 of the Public Inquiries Act by Order in Council 1096, dated 8 July 1943 with John Owen Wilson appointed as sole Commissioner. The Commissioner was to inquire into the administration of Mount View High School, Saanich, and in particular into the methods of discipline and alleged excessive corporal punishment administered by the Principal or by any other teacher. The Report of the Inquiry was submitted on 4 September 1943 and tabled with the Legislature on 3 February 1944.
