The fonds consists of records created and received by the Post Office Department. Fonds also includes records received from predecessor agencies including the Post Office Department of the Colony of British Columbia and the Post Office Department of the Colony of Vancouver Island. Fonds includes correspondence outward from the Victoria Post Office (1864-1873), a cash book of the New Westminster Post Office (1861-1868), a register of mail from the Pender Island Post Office (1902-1908) and a register of mail from the Clo-oose Post Office (1938-1951).

The fonds consists of records created and received by the Dept. of Marine and Fisheries and its subordinate agencies. Fonds includes log books for the Canadian government ships Sir James Douglas and Quadra as they served as lighthouse station tenders (1888-1906), and lighthouse journals believed to have been maintained by Captain James Gaudin on the British Columbia Coast (1902-1907).

This series contains correspondence between Messrs. Wm. Cochrane, H.M. Ball, W.R. Spalding, John Bowron, and Acting Postmaster General A.T. Bushby, concerning the establishment and operation of postal services between New Westminster and the Cariboo. The series also contains mail contracts drawn up between Bushby and Peter O'Toole and Stipendiary Magistrate Chartres Brew and H.R.H. Adamson.

The series consists of the records of the British Columbia Heritage Trust, primarily of its meetings, as well as some publicity and organizational files. The meeting records (primarily minutes and reports) are from the first to the 59th meeting, from March 1978 to June 1987. Other records include Board of Director’s files, Trust-Branch committee files, press releases, and office support services files.

In 1948 the Act to provide for the establishment of Hospital Insurance and Financial Aid to Hospitals (1948, c. 28, s.1.) was passed, and the British Columbia Hospital Insurance Service (BCHIS) was set up as the third branch of the Department of Health and Welfare. The fonds includes documents filed in support of registration of ships and copies of investigation reports. Types of records include correspondence, declarations of ownership, registered court documents, bills of sale, ship registration forms, certificates of survey and inspections, and reports. Records include material from the offices of the Mercantile Marine Shipping Office of Vancouver, B.C. including ships articles, log books, statement of engineers fees from the steamboat inspector and a minute book from the ship Pollalloch (1888-1952); records from the Carmanah Point lighthouse including lightkeepers diaries, lightkeepers journals, diaries of the engineer, engine room diaries, engine room detailed reports, fog signal operating reports, fog signal operating reports, quarterly returns of stores, a notebook containing weather statistics (1891-1965); and a diary from the Fiddle Reef lighthouse (1903-1940).

Fonds consists of records of the Board of Steamboat Inspection created in the office of the Inspector of Steamboats in the British Columbia Division. The fonds includes records of the Inspector of Steamboats, inspecting engineers, and of the steamers Onward and Glenora. It also includes Rules for the Inspection of Steamboats published by the federal Minister of Marine and Fisheries. Types of records include: registers, notes of engineers, reports of accidents, correspondence, returns, ledgers and requisition books, manifest books (Onward), crew list and account books (Glenora), inspectors' books, and manuals.

This series consists of the records of the Academic Council and its predecessor, the Academic Board for Higher Education as well as board minutes from the various regional colleges and provincial institutes. This series also includes copies of correspondence outward of the chairman and director of the council, policy papers, research reports, and data books showing funding and enrollment levels in provincial post-secondary institutions.

In 1964 an Academic Board for Higher Education was established by an amendment to the Universities Act (S.B.C. 1963, c. 52). The board was empowered to set academic standards for regional (community) colleges, to assist colleges in securing adequate staff and facilities, and to approve funding for college programs. The board was conducted by a chairman, appointed by cabinet, and functioned under the auspices of the Department of Education. The Academic Board was replaced in 1978 by the Academic Council of British Columbia, a crown corporation which derived its authority from the Colleges and Provincial Institutes Act (S.B.C. 1977, C. 67). The new council was established to coordinate academic, technical, and career programs in community colleges and in other provincially funded training institutes. As well, the council monitored admission and transfer arrangements between colleges, institutes, and universities.

"Colleges", as defined by the 1977 Act, were institutions whose objects were to provide (a) comprehensive courses of study equivalent to those given by a university at the first and second year postsecondary level, (b) postsecondary education or training, and (c) continuing education. "Provincial institutes", though not specifically defined by the Act, referred to institutions which provided occupational or vocational training and which offered programs for continuing education. The Academic Council was abolished in 1983, at which time many of its duties were assumed by the Academic Technical Programs Branch of the Ministry of Education.

The fonds consists of records created by the Yale School District as required by the Public Schools Act. The records include a minute book of the Board of School Trustees (1887-1929), which also includes correspondence and accounts.

The fonds includes a visitor's book (1876-1884) and attendance registers for South Saanich School (1878-1881, 1884-1886, and 1888-1897). It also includes attendance registers for East-South Saanich School (1882-1884). Some of the registers include the courses taken by the students.

The fonds consists of records of the South Gabriola School District, which included the only school on the island prior to 1883. Records include the attendance register for Gabriola School (1879-1886).

The records are individual records of students attending Gabriola School (1877-1878), the only school on the island from 1872 to 1883.

The fonds also includes records created by several schools in the district prior to 1946. The records includes a school trustees' minute book (1898-1906), an account book for Mission City School (1885-1905) and student attendance registers created by schools in Cardinell (1926-1929), Cedar Valley (1940-1944), Hatzic (1911-1920), Silverdale (1910-1931), Silverhill (1928-1939), and Stave Falls (1916-1926).

This series includes records of the Colony of Vancouver Island Police. Volume one is a charge book, 1862-1866; this volume also includes complaints of the Victoria Police Office, July - September 1866, and a census of householders in Victoria by street, 1871. Volume 2 is a daily report book, April 26, 1863-Dec. 23, 1864.

The fonds consists of minutes, correspondence and financial records of the Jordan River Athletic Association. The records document the activities of the association and its relationships with other clubs including the British Columbia Amateur Basketball Association. The fonds also includes the records of the Jordan River Badminton Club, Jordan River Social Hall, Jordan River Baseball Club, and Jordan River Lawn Tennis Club which have been intermingled with the records of the Jordan River Athletic Association.

This series consists of records of the Inquiry into the Circumstances of Landslides at Whatshan, 1953-1954. Records include argument of counsel, transcripts of evidence presented at the proceedings (1953-1954), exhibits (1953-1954), and Commissioner Clyne's original signed report with bound copy (1954). Although the BC Archives never received some exhibits, details about missing exhibits are recorded in the files.
