Mining in the Cowichan Valley : talk by Jack Fleetwood

The item is an audio recording that contains a talk by miner, logger and historian Jack Fleetwood of Cowichan Station, recorded at a meeting of the Shawnigan Lake Historical Society, November 25, 1980. After introducing his talk with comments about the gold rushes in California and B.C. (Fraser River, Cariboo, and Leechtown), Mr. Fleetwood talks about the 1865 finds at Koksilah, the Silver Mine at Stirling, and Glenapel; Robertson and Sons; iron ore at Maple Bay; the lost "silver" mine at Irvine; copper finds in 1892 at Colvins Mountain, and in 1898 at Bluebell, Mount Sicker, Tyee, and Lenora [?]; smelter at Osborne Bay; the Malahat Mining Company at Mt. Wood; Smith's Mountain, 1902-1907; King Solomon Mining Company and sawmill, 1913 and the mystery tunnel of Leechtown.

William Law Ogilby fonds

The fonds consists of an illustrated diary written in a school exercise book of William Law Ogilby's experience as a chainman on a survey of a portion of the western boundary of the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway Belt on Vancouver Island in 1892. A photograph, presumed to have been taken on the survey, depicts Ogilby and two other men at their camp at an unidentified location.

Records of the Colony of Vancouver Island Treasury

This series consists of a variety of records related to the Colony of Vancouver Island Treasury from 1853-1866. The majority of the records are various receipts, expenditures, estimates and financial statements of accounts. Accounts relate to a wide variety of government expenses, particularly those of the Land Office and transactions with the Hudson's Bay Company.

Other records include: a 1859 return of officers submitted to the Legislative Assembly detailing all employees of the colony, including their names, title, salary and remarks; an 1860 index of letters outwards including the date and subject; and a copy of the 1866 budget act with associated schedules.

Copies of Admiralty correspondence related to British Columbia

This series consists of 125 pages of typescript copies of correspondence. The pages are numbered 98-223, and the location of pages 1-97 is unknown. The originals were created between 1858 and 1861. The correspondence is between various members of the British Admiralty, or between the Admiralty and government officials from the colony of Vancouver Island.

The correspondence relates to topics such as: the construction of the Esquimalt navy base, powder magazine and lighthouses on Southern Vancouver Island; the deployment of Royal Marines, Royal Engineers, ships and gun boats to and around Vancouver Island; fights between various First Nations groups and conflicts between Indigenous Peoples and settlers at Victoria, Nanaimo, Fort Rupert [Port Hardy] and Haida Gwaii.

H.V. "Paddy" Acland interview

CALL NUMBER: T1085:0001 RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-11-12 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Paddy Acland remembers a few anecdotes about hunting and hiking in the BC interior. He explains how he came out to British Columbia from England after serving with the British Army duri;ng the Boer War. He describes expectations of life in BC and offers comments on the background of his father, John Acland. He arrived in BC in 1908; he describes the appearance of Summerland. He discusses his first jobs in the Okanagan; building his first log cabin; an anecdote about digging a basement for "Old Johnson"; buying and pre empting land in the Okanagan. TRACK 2: Paddy Acland describes the development of his own property near Eneas Lake between Peachland and Summerland. He discusses his first impressions of the Okanagan Valley, coming into it via train and boat. He describes ;the sternwheeler "Aberdeen"; labouring for a tobacco farmer in Kelowna; working for a dairy farmer, the meanest man Mr. Acland had ever met; comments on another employer, named "Fluffy" Williston. Mr. Acland offers further comments on British immigrants who came to the Okanagan during this era.

Mr. Acland returned to England for two months, and then returned to the Okanagan. He offers an; anecdote about a man being thrown into Lake Okanagan with all of his belongings, for making a pass at a local girl, and the "rough" justice of the era. More anecdotes about promiscuity between wives; of landed settlers and hired working men. Mr. Acland discusses his marriage to a girl from Summerland, and a digression on the different types of English immigrants, including the class that settled; in Vernon during the early decades of the century, which he found snobbish and pretentious. He describes the mixture of settlers in Kelowna during this era. TRACK 2: Mr. Acland offers comments about the Edgelow family of Kelowna, particularly Mrs. Edgelow, who delighted in shocking Kelowna residents prior to World War I. He comments on the background of the Acland family and offers anecdotes ;about his mother-in-law, Mrs. Hutton of Kelowna, an ardent Catholic convert who often entertained in her large home. He tells a story about an English orchardist who planted his trees upside down, an;d describes dances and social activities in the Okanagan Valley during this era. He describes the growth and development of Summerland during its early years and reflects upon the different currents ;of immigrants and settlers which have made up the fabric of Canadian society.

Mining register and Royal Engineers record book

Series consists of one mining records register book. The volume is a register of various land grants, mineral claims, mining records, and water rights. Included are a December 1864-1878 register of all claims and water privileges recorded in the Leech and Sooke River districts and a 1873-1911 register of all mining records and mineral claims recorded at Victoria by the Chief Gold Commissioner. Areas covered include the Queen Charlotte Islands [Haida Gwaii], Cassiar district, portions of Vancouver Island, and adjacent mainland BC coasts. Also included is a list of Royal Engineers who purchased their discharge in BC or Vancouver Island on the return of the North American Boundary Commission to England on 26 Sep 1863 and Schedule of Crown Grants issued to Royal Engineers who served in the Colony of British Columbia under Colonel Moody.

Vancouver Island Supreme Court of Civil Justice bench book

Series consists of one bench book for Colony of Vancouver Island Supreme Court of Civil Justice civil and criminal cases heard by Judge David Cameron at Fort Victoria from November 1853 to January 1856 and one criminal case at Nanaimo in May 1854. It also includes civil cases heard at Victoria in the Inferior Court of Civil Justice in 1856. The volume additionally served as a criminal record book for 1853, a cause book for 1856, and a Registrar's record book for 1853. It opens with a notation that Judge Cameron's commission was read and that he took his seat on 6 October 1853. The Registrar also notes that he received the court seal from Judge Cameron.
