Ida Halpern fonds

Fonds consists of mulitmedia records documenting Ida Halpern's professional work and private affairs of her life in Canada. The records document predominantly Halpern's study of the art and culture of First Nation's communities on the West Coast of British Columbia. In particular, Halpern's studies focus on the musical traditions and cultures of First Nations communities. Halpern's recordings include music from the Kwakwaka'wakw peoples, Nuu-chah-nulth peoples, Haida peoples, and the Coast Salish peoples. There is also a considerable amount of textual material concerning Halpern's study of her recordings and publication of her conclusions on her work. Material from her writings as a music critic and supporter of local arts comprises a smaller portion of the fonds. There are also records of Halpern's private affairs in the form of correspondence, photographs and various ephemera.

The fonds consists of records generated by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, its subordinate branches, divisions and agencies and predecessors, relating to the administration of Indian affairs in British Columbia. The fonds includes records created in the offices of the Indian Reserve Commissioner, the Indian Commissioner, and the Chief-Inspector of Indian Agencies for the Department of Indian Affairs and the Indian Affairs Branch. It also includes records of the Victoria office of the Indian Superintendent of British Columbia. Copies of records from the National Archives of Canada include microfilm copies of parts of RG 10 (central registry files and records of the Indian Reserve Commission) and photocopies of finding aids. Types of records from the office of the Indian Superintendent of British Columbia include records books, cash books, cheque books, letters of credit, statement of accounts, schedules, and requisition receipt books.

Jim Ryan fonds

The fonds consists of photographs and other records from 1908 to ca. 1995, created or collected by Jim Ryan in the course of his career as a photographer. There are approximately 105,738 photographs, mostly black and white and colour negatives, but also including prints, slides and glass slides. The fonds also includes textual records consisting of news stories, copies of Ryan's publications, a few letters and other such material. The majority of the photographs were taken in the Victoria area and include images of the harbour, the city, buildings, events and parks. There are many photographs of British Columbia politicians, notably W.A.C. Bennett, as well as distinguished visitors, federal and local politicians. There are also photographs of local characters, children and ordinary people. Although most of the photographs were taken in the Victoria area, there are occasional images taken in other areas of Vancouver Island as well as some of Ryan's travel photographs. Some of the earliest material relates to World War I and may be Ryan family photographs or items that Ryan collected out of interest.

The fonds also includes motion picture film material, including completed films, production elements, news stories shot for television, and selected reels of footage.

The fonds consists of records created by Thomas (Tom) Fyles from 1914 to 1980 and particularly document his climbing career. The fonds includes 13 photo albums and one shoe box of negatives organized by album. The albums document climbing trips from 1913-1969. Textual records include Fyles' pocket climbing/trip diary which documents trips from 1913 through 1930s recording daily activities, costs per trip, supplies and food, photos taken. The records also include Margaret Gladstone's pocket diary of trip to Mt. Rainier in July 1921 and letters home to parents documenting 1921 trip with BCMC members (including her future husband Tom Fyles) to Selkirk Mountains. Also included are letters of condolence to Fyles' family; letter regarding naming of Mt. Fyles; photocopies of caricature sketches by climber Alec Dalgleish; 15 topographic charts by climber Neal Carter, 9 journals, offprint articles and pamphlets.

Canadian Northern Pacific Railway fonds

The fonds consists of photographs, maps and technical drawings that document the railway line building activities of the Canadian Northern Pacific Railway in British Columbia. The seven photograph albums consist of black and white photographs taken between 1911 and 1913 of the construction of the railway line from Port Mann in the Lower Fraser division to mile 421 near Valemount. The albums are arranged by division and mile number and most have captions. The first four albums also contain small copies of blueprint maps showing the extent of the division. These maps are glued into the back page of the albums. The fonds also includes a gatefold technical drawing in a leather case. This drawing is a progress profile created by the construction department for the building of the Patricia Bay rail line on Vancouver Island. The drawing goes from mile 1.2 at North Quadra Street to mile 8 at Martindale Road and was probably drawn by Lawrence P. Macrae, engineer ca. 1913. In 2021 three technical drawings were added to the fonds. These are sheets that contain both profile plans and surveys of the CNPR line on both Vancouver Island and on the mainland. Number 24925E shows the extra width right of way from mile 210 to mile 212.50 (east from New Westminster Bridge), 1913. Number 24926E shows a proposed level crossing at mile 23.6 at West Sooke Road on Vancouver Island, 1911. Number 24927E shows a proposed connection with New Westminster Southern Railway at Port Kells, mile 82.77 west from Yale, 1911.

The fonds consists of correspondence and telegram messages created by the Telegraph Creek telegraph office agents from 1949 to 1962. From 1949 to 1954 the Telegraph Creek office was run by the Government Telegraph and Telephone Service. From 1954 to 1961, the office was managed from the Vancouver office of the North-west Telephone Company. When North-west joined the British Columbia Telephone Company in 1961, the running of the exchange was managed by the British Columbia Telephone Company. The first file contains correspondence (1949-1956) between the Telegraph Creek agent and the supervisor either of the Government Telegraph and Telephone Service or the North-west Telephone Company regarding office facilities, supplies, payment, work duties etc. The rest of the files are arranged by month and year (1958-1962) and consist of telegram messages sent out and messages received in at the Telegraph Creek office.

The fonds consists of a painted, cedar box that contained correspondence by Emily Carr and others to Mrs. McVicker, publications by Mrs. McVicker, newspaper clippings about Carr, a wooden doll reputed to have belonged to Carr, a 1908 framed copy photograph of Carr and her pet crow (from ca 1887), and a framed artwork. The box may have been painted in 1949 by George Clutesi with Haida designs copied from a 1905 publication by John R. Swanton. The box and the doll were transferred to the Human History Division of the RBCM.

Wright, who preserved the records, protected their mother's intellectual property, and assisted historian and biographer Margaret A. Ormsby with her book A Pioneer Gentlewoman in British Columbia: The Recollections of Susan Allison (University of British Columbia Press, 1976).

Fonds also includes records accumulated while the organization was known as the Vancouver Music Teachers' Association, British Columbia Music Teachers' Federation, and British Columbia Music Teachers Association.

Minutes of the Provincial Council from 1985 to 2002 were donated in 2023.

The fonds consists of the records generated by the 1997 North American Indigenous Games in the course of managing the sport and cultural events that took place in Victoria, BC in August 1997. The fonds includes two series: the management files of Alex Nelson, Executive Director and Rick Brant, General Manager and marketing files. The management files are arranged by subject and include correspondence with the Aboriginal Sports and Recreation Association of BC (ASRA) and other records relating to the management, administration and financial aspects of the games. The management files also include policy and procedure files, briefing materials, reports and minutes from meetings. The marketing files are arranged alphabetically by subject and consist of general files regarding all aspects of marketing the sport and culture events of the games. The marketing files also include a poster, examples of bronze, silver and gold medals and three videocassettes.

The fonds consists of project files created by Jean Jacques André Consultants Ltd., and André & Associates Interpretation & Design Ltd., a Victoria-based company. Headed by Jean Jacques André (1932-2021) and his wife, Joan André, and later his daughter, Bianca Message, the family company planned and designed exhibits for museums, historical organizations, and cultural and visitor centres across North America and around the world. The fonds cover the period 1967 to 2014. In 2026, two plans of the 'Coastal Waters' exhibit at the Royal BC Museum was added to the fonds. These were Found in Collection in 2025. The 'Coastal Waters' design did not come to fruition.
