The item is a documentary film. Tony Hoar has been cycling professionally for over thirty years. No longer in his prime, he now races to test his endurance rather than to seek power and dominance. He is featured taking part in a bicycle race in Vancouver, during which he reflects on his life in the sport.

For twenty cents a day

The item is a video copy of a documentary from 1979. It depict the Great Depression of the 1930s and the accompanying societal struggles are documented through archival footage and interviews with people who took part. Specific topics covered include the work relief camps, the On-to-Ottawa Trek, and the birth of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation.

Fiftieth anniversary of Fort Macleod, Alberta

The item is a video copy of a documentary film from 1924. It is a record of the celebrations of July 1-3, 1924, marking the 50th anniversary of the town of Macleod and the founding of Fort Macleod, the first North West Mounted Police Post in western Canada. Rodeo champion Jack Boyd of 70 Mile House, BC, appears in some scenes. The final sequence was filmed in September 1924.

Valiant company

The item is a film docudrama from 1945.. Made to raise Victory Bond funds for the rehabilitation of disabled veterans, this film is centred around Captain Alan Piper, who lost both hands in an army training accident and learned to manage many daily tasks with his artificial hands. He is depicted visiting other disabled vets at hospitals in Vancouver and Toronto, and the rehabilitation facilities are shown. Filmed in part at Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver.

North of the border

The item is a travelogue from 1942. It is a film on the attractions of vacationing in British Columbia, intended for American audiences. Footage includes: Peace Arch Park; Vancouver (skyline, city hall, waterfront, activities in Stanley Park, Lions Gate Bridge); Capilano Golf Club; Victoria (Empress Hotel, Parliament Buildings, homes and gardens, golf course); summer cruising up the coast; Princess Louisa Inlet; the Fraser Canyon; Cariboo Highway; the Okanagan Valley (scenery and orchards); the Big Bend Highway in the Rocky Mountains; Boat Encampment at the confluence of Wood River and Canoe River with the Columbia River; Kinbasket Lake; mountains and glaciers; Fraser Valley (fishing for steelhead in the Vedder River).

Douglas S. Wilson collection

The collection mainly consists of copies of several short films by Oscar and Dorothy Burritt. The Burritts were film enthusiasts and amateur filmmakers who lived in Vancouver until 1947. Oscar C. Burritt also worked as a professional cinematographer and director. In later years he worked for CBC Television in Toronto. Both the Burritts were active in the film society movement, including the Vancouver Branch of the National Film Society and the Toronto Film Society.

The collection includes footage of Vancouver events and places, as well the amateur or experimental works "And--", "Bats Out of Hell", "Residue 2", "Suite Two: A Memo to Oscar", and "Three There". The collection also includes Douglas Wilson's 1981 oral history interview with Leon C. Shelly, who discusses his career as a film producer in Vancouver and Toronto. It also includes a photograph of a portrait of Dorothy Burritt, painted in 1947 by Peter Bortkus.

Oscar C. Burritt introduces "The Lady from Shanghai" [1969]: Film enthusiast Oscar C. Burritt introduces a television broadcast of the 1947 Orson Welles film. In discussing the Chinese opera sequence in the film, Burritt uses his own photographs of Vancouver's Chinese theatres and opera performers as illustrations.
May Day parade, Vancouver [1938]: Special event footage showing Labour unions, ethnic groups, fraternal organizations and other Vancouver citizens marching in a mass May Day parade; the various groups are identified by signs and banners. Floats and signs depict social conditions and reflect the current world situation, especially the Spanish Civil War and the spread of Fascism in Europe.
Residue 2 [ca. 1939]: Experimental film combining found footage (on mixed film stock) with hand-painted stock and hand-scratched stock leader. No readily identifiable locations are shown.

The series consists of records created by the Game Commission (1948-1957) and the Fish and Game Branch (1957-1966). The series contains subject files relating to wildlife management, private shooting areas, game fish culture, river and stream pollution and obstructions, water licences, and parks. The records relate to a wide variety of topics such as habitat protection, pollution, the impacts of resource extraction projects, impacts of recreation activities, wildlife management and fisheries management across the province.

The series also includes the personal monthly duty diaries of a conservation officer.

Three there and Cinemaorgy

The item is a VHS video copied from the National Film, Television and Sound Archives, National Archives of Canada in 1986. The cassette contains copies of two films: "Three there", an experimental film from 1940 which shows an impressionistic record of a sojourn on Galiano Island over a Labour Day weekend, with Oscar Burritt, Dorothy Fowler [later Burritt] and Margaret Roberts.

Cinemaorgy from 1955 is an amateur film. It is a record of the Toronto Film Society's visit to George Eastman House in Rochester, New York. Includes re-filmed excerpts from some of the classic films screened for the society members during their visit.

Fish and Wildlife Branch executive records and correspondence

This series consists of correspondence created or received by various employees in the Department of Fish and Wildlife from 1969-1978. This includes correspondence inwards and outwards from the Minister of the Department of Recreation and Conservation, who led the Branch at this time. The records relate to a wide variety of topics such as habitat protection, pollution, the impacts of resource extraction projects, impacts of recreation activities, wildlife management and fisheries management.

The series includes correspondence to and or from the following individuals: William K. Kiernan and Jack Radford, Minister of Recreation and Conservation; Director of Fish and Wildlife Branch; D.J. Robinson, Assistant Director, Management and Development; D.M. Galbraith, G.D. Taylor, and M.R. Whatley, Fish Habitat Improvement; E.H. Vernon, Chief of Fisheries Improvement; R.C. Thomas, Fisheries Management; I.L. Wither and C.J. Bull, Fish Habitat protection; D. Demarchi, D.R. Halladay and W.A. McKay, Wildlife Biologist; K.R.D. Mundy, Assistant Chief of Wildlife Management; and W.G. Smith, Chief of Wildlife Management. Many other individuals may be included in the records, as many of the records are convenience copies sent to other executives as a reference. The minister's correspondence files may include letters written to or from other executives, such as the Deputy Minister.

Records also include memos and a few subject files. Correspondence files may include reports, maps and other enclosures. Correspondence referral replies are generally letters sent to the Minister or other executives and forwarded to other relevant employees for an answer. Many of these letters are from members of the public raising concerns over environmental issues such as pollution or industrial activities.

And-- and Let's go fishing

The item is VHS video containing copies of two films copied from the National Film, Television and Sound Archives, National Archives of Canada in 1986. The first item on the video is the experimental film "And---", made around 1939. Perhaps the first experimental film made in British Columbia, this short uses found footage, painted and scratched emulsion, negative and reversed images, chaotic camera movements, and holes punched in the frame and filled with other images. Some portions are hand coloured.

The second item on the videotape is "Let's go Fishing", an industrial film made by the British Columbia Dept. of Fisheries in 1948. It depicts commercial salmon fishing and canning in BC and includes fish ladders at Hells Gate and Bridge River rapids, the operations of gillnetters and purse-seiners, long, good interior sequence of canning processes (including footage of an "Iron Chink" salmon butchering machine) and cannery workers.

Suite two : a memo to Oscar

The item is a duplicate print of an experimental film by Dorothy Burritt and Stanley Fox. It was produced as a gift to Dorothy Burritt's husband, filmmaker Oscar Burritt (who was working in Toronto at the time) and is an offbeat study of life at their Vancouver apartment -- suite 2, 1960 Robson Street. The camera explores the apartment and the household memorabilia, and Dorothy is seen sitting for a portrait by painter Peter Bortkus. Later some friends drop by for a screening of Sacha Guitry's film "Pearls of the Crown", followed by a party. Among the guests are Moira Armour, film editor Maureen Balfe, UBC student Stanley Fox, photographer Peter Varley, and an unnamed figure wearing a bird costume. Most of the people shown would have been involved with the National Film Society of Canada (Vancouver Branch). "Suite Two" won honourable mention (amateur category) at the first Canadian Film Awards in 1949.

Leon Shelly interview

The item is an audio interview on three cassettes, recorded in Toronto on December 10, 1981. In it, Leon Shelly relates the history of his involvement in the British Columbia motion picture industry from 1936 to 1945, and discusses his motion picture production activities in Toronto from 1945 to around 1953.

Bureau of Mines D

The file is a photograph album, probably compiled by Harold T. Nation for the Bureau of Mines around 1919, using photographs taken between ca. 1898 and 1917. It contains 147 photographs showing mines, mining equipment and workers as well as mining landscapes including towns and valleys. Most of the photographs have captions and other information but the album is not indexed. Some of the photographs in this album may have been used in the Dept. of Mines annual reports.

Postcards from the Pandemic

The file consists of 540 individual postcards that were created by the artist collective BOXCARSIX in the Victoria region during the COVID-19 pandemic between 2020 and 2021.

Postcards from the Pandemic is a collaborative mail art project of over 900 postcards that were created by artists in and around Victoria, BC in the depths of social lockdown created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The project was begun in March 2020 by members of BOXCARSIX Artist Collective to stay connected during lockdown. Each artist initiated a series of postcards leaving space in each one for another person to add and respond to. Each card was then mailed on to another artist to add to and potentially complete the postcard.

Each postcard has been assigned its own unique PDP number and is stored in its own folder. See finding aid for container descriptions.

Pemberton Holmes Ltd. fonds

The fonds consists of the business records of Pemberton Holmes Ltd. and its predecessor companies, including Pemberton & Son, Pemberton & Son Ltd. and Pemberton, Holmes Ltd. It also consists of records which relate to personal business activities and personal family matters. The records were created between 1859 and 1989, with the bulk of the material dating from the founding of Pemberton & Son in 1887 to approximately 1950. The records document the business and economic life of the province, and many aspects of social history. The geographic scope of the records includes the entire province of British Columbia, and to a lesser degree, parts of the Prairie Provinces and Washington State. Of particular significance are records for Victoria, Oak Bay, Port Alberni and southern Vancouver Island, Vancouver and the lower mainland of British Columbia.

The company records are evidence of a wide range of business and legal transactions, including the brokering of private mortgages, property sales and transfers, the renting of residences and small business premises, insurance purchases and servicing, estate management, and investments in industries such as mining. The parties to the business and legal transactions range from large companies and institutions to the average person wishing to rent or purchase a house, lot or farm. The records reflect that a major client of Pemberton & Son was the Anglican Synod of the Diocese of British Columbia, for whom the company served as financial agent.

The company remained a family enterprise, and it appears the principals of the company tended to maintain personal records intermingled with company records. Frederick B. Pemberton was principal trustee of the J.D. Pemberton estate, which included large land holdings in Oak Bay, which over time were sold and subdivided. The records reflect the fact that the management of the family estate was integrated with the activities of the company. Furthermore, just as his father had farmed in Oak Bay, Frederick operated a farm in Gordon Head and an 1100-acre farm at Cowichan Station; the records generated by these operations were closely interwoven with the company. Similarly, in the case of Brentwood College, the principals of Pemberton Holmes Ltd. had a personal involvement in its founding and management, and at the same time, their company had a business relationship with the school. Personal records include but are not limited to: tax returns, insurance policies, and records concerning purchase and sale of securities, goods and services. They also consist of family photographs, ephemera, and correspondence. The latter includes letters from J.D. Pemberton to his daughter, the artist, Sophie Pemberton.

The fonds includes approximately 2750 business files, originally in docket envelopes, which made up the main filing system of Pemberton & Son and its successor companies. Most of these files consist of client transaction records, including business and legal documents with accompanying correspondence. A majority of the files concern specific properties or lots, and relate to the sale, conveyance, mortgage, rent or lease of those properties. A smaller number relate to a person, estate, organization, company, or subject, but not to a specific property. The physical housing of these files was, in most cases, a string-bound, reinforced, docket envelope, which contained the folded documents. The fonds also consists of a large group of financial records, including 103 bound ledger books, journals and cash books. There originally were links between these financial records and the docket files, but it is often not possible now to establish those links, and significant gaps exist for both groups of records.

Other textual materials include correspondence, annual reports, minutes of directors and shareholder meetings, monthly and annual financial statements and reports, tax returns, legal documents including wills and other estate records, records for real estate sales particularly in the Greater Victoria area, and routine office records. Records of some clients (notably, relating to an estate) have been maintained as they were originally filed, in their own series. There is a smaller amount of ephemera, including newspapers, scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, and collected published material including brochures and pamphlets.

The records include published and unpublished maps, fire insurance maps, subdivision plans, blueprints, architectural drawings, advertising display materials, and photographs of the Pemberton Holmes buildings and various buildings and locations in Victoria and the south Vancouver Island region.

The fonds also contains business and personal records of Frederick George Pennington (Fred) Maurice, who worked for the company for 52 years (ca. 1926-1977) and who became a director of the company. In the 1980s, in his retirement, Fred Maurice wrote an unpublished history, which is a part of the fonds. Largely anecdotal in nature, his manuscript covers Pemberton and Holmes family history (ca. 1850 to 1940) and company history (ca. 1887 to 1940). In the course of his research, it appears Maurice removed some records from their original locations. His handwritten annotations and bookmarks also appear on or with some of the records.

The Pemberton & Son office building at Fort and Broad Street, Victoria, BC, was destroyed by fire on March 23, 1909. In his history, Fred Maurice attributes "significant blanks" in the company's early records to this fire.
