The series consists of films and videotapes produced or acquired by the Ministry of Tourism government film unit (and its predecessor bodies) responsible for creating and distributing tourism and promotional films about British Columbia.

Men, mountains and the challenge

The item is a composite print of a documentary film made ca. 1957. It shows highway construction in BC. Includes planning and surveys; opening of contractors' bids by Highways Minister Gaglardi; clearing of route by heavy equipment; culvert assembly; drilling and blasting rock; road bed preparation; paving. Traffic control and overpass construction are also discussed. Sections of Highways 1 and 1A are shown, and Premier W.A.C. Bennett presides at an official opening.

The sensitive sockeye

The item is a release print of a documentary film from ca. 1958. It depicts the life cycle of the sockeye salmon and the work of the International Pacific Salmon Fisheries Commission in ensuring the survival of that cycle and of BC's salmon fishing industry. Footage includes: Fort St. James salmon run; seining and gillnetting for sockeye; fishways, fish ladders at Hell's gate, Bridge River and Seton Creek dam; etc.

Road of the caribou

The item is a release print of a promotional film from 1964. It depicts the history of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, and a look at the area through which it passes. Shows inaugural run from North Vancouver to Fort St. John, Oct. 1958, (with Premier W.A.C. Bennett aboard) and driving of the Golden Spike at Fort St. John, Oct. 5 1958. Also includes footage of the Williams Lake Stampede, Peace River grain fields, oil/gas drilling and refining; also the operations of the PGE (North Vancouver rail yards, winter operations).

The item is a release print of a travelogue from 1967. It depicts the attractions of Alaska and the Yukon Territory; includes CN's "Northland Prince" leaving Vancouver harbour and sailing up the Inside Passage to Alaska. Narration includes excerpts from the poetry of Robert W. Service.

Vancouver Island

Travelogue. Attractions of Vancouver Island, including: the Swiftsure yacht race; trail-riding and hiking in the central part of the island; the south-western coast; All-Sooke Day (logger's sports, etc.); a trip to Nootka Sound aboard the "Uchuck III".

Kootenay Lake holiday

The item is a release print of a travelogue film from 1961. It shows the attractions of the Kootenay Lake area. Includes footage of Creston; swimming and boating on Kootenay Lake; ferry to Balfour; the retired sternwheeler "Moyie"; trout fishing; Kokanee Glacier Park campground; Nelson's annual summer curling bonspiel, pancake breakfast and logging sports day, and the Nelson Summer School of Fine Arts (with shots of painting, weaving, pottery and dance).

Big game camera holiday : German version

The item is a composite print of a nature film made from 1957-1962. A fictional narrator uses motion picture camera to track big game in Tweedsmuir Park and the Cassiar district. Subjects include mountain caribou, mountain goats, grizzly bear, California bighorn sheep, whitetail deer, elk, stone sheep, moose and Osborn caribou.

Includes footage of rodeo events at the Williams Lake Stampede (ca. 1953); fishing scenes; Fort Alexandria cairn; Prince George railway station (ca. 1941); overhead cable ferry at Boston Bar; customs or toll highway stop outside New Westminster (1940s); hydraulic mining; tool booths (possibly King George Highway in Surrey); sunsets; and various recreational activities such as boating, water skiing; etc.

The item is a reel of film out-takes from around 1957-1961. The first ca. 525 feet of this reel shows bighorn sheep grazing, being corralled, and being herded into a truck container. The second part of the reel (ca. 575 feet) comprises (duplicate?) out-footage from the BC Government Travel Bureau film "Big Game Camera Holiday", including footage of caribou in summer and winter; bighorn sheep; mountain goats; moose; birds; flowers; and some aerial shots. Both sections show photographers "stalking" the animals with still and 16 mm movie cameras.
