Amateur film. Exterior views of the Provincial Gaol and the Provincial Home at Kamloops, including the grounds and orchards behind the buildings. Continues with footage showing the highway and countryside between Kamloops and Clearwater, as well as road and bridge work crews and a moose pasture. Murtle River and Dawson Falls (in Well Gray Park). Recreational activities at a corrections forestry work camp. Filmed April-May, 1959.

Memorandum of Agreement re: Old Cariboo Road

The file consists of a signed agreement from 1928 between the Province represented by the Minister of Public Works and the Canadian Pacific Railway Company (CPR). The agreement sets out compensation to be paid by the CPR for each level crossing on the Old Cariboo Road between Haig and Spences Bridge that would be eliminated by the construction of the new provincial highway.

The agreement is accompanied by a photocopied letter from 1963 from the Office of the Attorney-General to the Chief Engineer of the Dept. of Highways instructing them to keep the agreement in their active files.

Reminiscences / Ernest Hubert Allcock, Ernest Hubert

The item is a photocopy of the reminiscences of Ernest Hubert Allcock. Allcock emigrated from England to Alberta in 1909 and worked on farms and on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. In 1914 he homesteaded near White's Landing, north of Quesnel. He was highway foreman in Quesnel, and from 1941 to 1952 in Lillooet.

Essays and accounts

The series consists of microfilmed transcripts of short essays on various subjects, including the transport and mining industries in B.C., the history of B.C., descriptions of Victoria and other B.C. cities by Cariboo grocer Leonard A. Coton. Also includes accounts of car trips taken by L.A. Coton to the Okanagan, the Cariboo and on Vancouver Island in the 1950s.

International Fact Finding Committee (Canada-United States, 1931)

This series contains International Fact Finding Committee records to October 1931. In the early 1930s, separate Canadian and American committees (Canadian 1931, US 1930) were formed to study the proposed B.C.-Yukon-Alaska highway. The two committees met as a joint fact finding committee in Victoria in 1931. The Canadian committee did not publish a report but reported the results of its investigation to the U.S. Dept. of the Interior. The published report of the American commission contains information collected by the Canadian committee. This volume, which contains material relating to the study and the joint meeting, consists of notes on the joint meeting, route reconnaissance reports, preliminary construction estimates and individual reports on mineral, forest and water resources in the proposed route areas of British Columbia (2 copies).

The item consists of three reels of promotional film.
Reel one: Captain Vancouver's monument, entrance to Vancouver harbour, the Lions, ship approaching, Siwash Rock, boathouse at harbour entrance, freighter passing, view of ships, piers and buildings. HMS "Hood" and HMS "Repulse" in the harbour. Pan over downtown section of Vancouver. Making hemp rope in factory. Woman making woolen products on loom. Huge herd of cattle on a flat prairie. Stockyards. Tank car unloading oil. Mattresses being made. Plants along the waterfront. Apple trees in the Okanagan; apples being picked, packed and stored. Cars on the Pacific Highway.
