Port Douglas : old store, old Mr. Parsell [sic] & family & hotel keeper

The item is a b&w photograph of the old store in Port Douglas run by the Purcell family. It shows "old" Mr. Purcell and family as well as hotel keeper H. Keefer. According to information on the back of the photograph "the old store [was] on Pemberton Meadows trail to Cariboo gold fields."

Daphne Sleigh identifies the person second from right at Goodwin Purcell in her book "The People of the Harrison." Information about the store and family found on pages 64-66.

Carmichael's camp, Powell River townsite

The item is a b&w photograph showing Carmichael's camp at the Powell River townsite in 1910. Note on the back of one print reads "site of present townsite summer 1910. Before any work was done at Powell R. paper mill, Herbert Carmichael was there putting up notice applying for the power."

Photographs

The series consists of loose photographs, a mixture of negatives and prints, taken by Carmichael in the early 1900s. They are of various places including Alberni, Powell River, Haida Gwaii and Peace River and show landscapes, water courses, dams and people as well as mining operations. Several prints may have been removed from an album.

Each image was given an HP (historic photograph) number in the sequence HP001665 to HP001739 and kept as part of the Archives general file (accession 193501-001). Prints, both original and copy, are in the HP original folders while negatives, both original and copy, are filed either by HP number or by negative number, depending on the media (glass, nitrate, acetate etc.).
