The fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Sharon Rempel in the course of her work as an agricultural and garden heritage consultant in Alberta and British Columbia ca. 1987-2000. The files include research and project files with the headings: Horticultural history, Heritage gardens, Agriculture and Agricultural history. The files also contain copies of Sharon's published works and copies of reference publications relating to agriculture and garden history she used in the course of her work. Other files includes class work and research material relating to her studies at York University and other institutions ca. 1989-1994. The fonds also includes approximately 660 colour slides, 14 audio cassettes, four VHS cassettes and 1 minidv cassette that contain interviews with Sharon regarding the grist mill and other issues relating to heritage gardens, heritage seeds and food security.

The fonds consists of correspondence, a diary, a report, a meteorological observation journal and a photograph album created by E.A. Weir and E.W. White between 1911 and 1913. The records in the fonds documents the agricultural survey of the Northern Valley area contiguous to the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, undertaken by Weir and White on behalf of the Dept. of Agriculture.
Weir and White were both students at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph and they spent the summer of 1911 travelling by boat, foot and pack horse investigating the agricultural condiitons and possibilities in the valleys between Prince Rupert and Fort George.

The series consists of release prints, printing elements, film out-takes and videos created between 1973 and 1989 by the Media Production Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and its predecessor agencies. The Media Production Centre was situated in Kelowna, B.C. Many of the films were produced by third party production companies.
Accession F1981:14 includes 19 reels of miscellaneous film footage, stock shots and out-takes, on colour reversal magnetic stripe stock, except for the last roll, which is black and white.
Accession F1981:15 includes printing elements for 33 completed films. Most film printing elements consist of an A roll, produced by splicing original reversal film, and an optical sound track. A few others are more complex with A & B rolls (also spliced original reversal), sometimes C rolls and both optical track and magnetic master mix. 31 of the 33 films were produced by the Media Production Centre and present various aspects of agriculture in British Columbia and were made for educational purposes and to promote B.C. agriculture. Two other films were produced by the Department of Health on the subjects of nutrition and on radiation protection services.
Accession 95-1658 (2021:01) includes seven reels of colour reversal film, 14 release prints (9 of which are the release print of the films represented in the earlier accession of printing elements), 25 videocassettes and 1 colour slideshow with accompanying cassette tape.

The series consists of 64 film reels of stories or items (including out-takes from items) dealing with various aspects of agriculture in BC, produced for television broadcast by the Horticultural Branch of the B.C. Dept. of Agriculture, between 1959 and 1973. Topics include: cattle, chinchilla raising, diseases of plants, fruit-growing, fruit tree care, grain growing, insects, irrigation, mushroom growing, poultry raising, ranching, vegetable planting and harvesting, etc. The series was originally broadcast by CHBC-TV Kelowna, and later by several other stations as well.

This series consists of cabinet and Treasury Board submission records from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and its predecessors from 1987-1999. Cabinet, also known as the Executive Council, sets priority issues for government, approves policies set by ministries and approves the regulations and orders-in-council that flesh out the generalized language of laws passed in the Legislative Assembly. These are records leading to the preparation of cabinet submissions by the ministry and document the development of information that goes before Cabinet or that is used in developing a Cabinet submission.

Files regard a variety of topics related to agriculture, food production, food distribution, and fisheries. Some topics include: loans and financial assistance for farmers and food producers; development of food industries, including wine; aquaculture and fisheries issues; agriculture policies; use of agricultural land reserves for golf courses; export, trade and treaty negotiations with the US for products such as salmon; Indigenous involvement in fisheries and Nisga’a fisheries negotiation; and environmental issues such as soil conservation and droughts. First Nations mentioned in these records include the Sto-lo Nation, Musquem, Tsawwassen First Nation, Nat’oot’en, Gitxsan, Wet’suwet’en, Gitanyow, Tsimshian, Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, Tk’emlúps (Kamloops Indian Band) and Nisga’a Lisims Government.

Cabinet records include cabinet submissions, correspondence, financial records, Treasury Board financial impact assessments, notes, reports, drafts, briefing notes, presentations, records of decision, order in councils, requests for legislation and background information providing context to submissions.

This series consists of reports, working papers, and records used in the creation of final reports for the Select Standing Committee on Agriculture from primarily 1977-1978.

In April 1977 the Select Standing Committee on Agriculture led an investigation into the state of the province’s food industry, including an extensive research program to create detailed reports on the status of several food industries in the province, including production, processing and distribution of food products in the province. This included three phases of research:

I. The inventory and suitability of agricultural land; supply and demand for agricultural land and associated impact of land prices on food cost
II. Comparing production costs to neighboring regions; impact of marketing boards on farmer income and consumer cost
III. The cost factors, structure and performance of processing, wholesaling and retailing

The committee had its own research staff responsible for creating their final reports and created a variety of records in the process of researching and writing these reports.

Records include graphs, reports, tables, data, notes, drafts, surveys, correspondence, copies of legislation, marketing board annual reports, instructional manuals for computer systems and recording data, computer data print outs, and other reference materials used in creating reports. Records may be created by the committee or submitted to the committee from various industry groups for informational purposes.

Records address topics such as: the state of various livestock and other agricultural industries; creating a farm financial analysis system to process data; economic expansion and business practices of the food industry; consumer studies; results and impacts of government aid and legislation on farmers; marketing boards and farmer’s co-operatives for different food items and how they operate; and farming practices in various industries. Various food related industries are studied including: fish, dairy, eggs, meat, vegetables, grains, baking, and retail outlets.

These records are classified under Administrative Records Classification System number 201-01 (ARCS schedule 10001).

This series contains records from the Risk Management and Competitiveness Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, and later the Strategic Industry Development Branch. More specifically, these records originated in the office of Harvey Sasaki who was Assistant Deputy Minister in that division.

The records cover a variety of executive functions, notably committee work, correspondence, and briefing notes. Within committee and group work, the series contains Strategy meeting agendas and meeting minutes. These files concern agricultural issues, fisheries issues and minister’s issues. The files are accompanied by copies of presentations, technical reviews, action items, notes and reports. There are also a significant amount of files from the Canada-British Columbia Agricultural Framework Implementation Agreement Management committee, Executive/Directors meetings, Executive Committee of the Investment Agriculture Foundation. MAFF chapter leads meeting and Competitiveness Circle meetings. Please note that meetings regarding policy discussions and recommendations related to an agricultural framework for Canada can be found in GR-3894.
There are also a small number of files dealing with executive issues. These files are arranged into folders by issue and contain meeting minutes, reports, financial statements, correspondence and memos from ad-hoc groups tasked with discussing these issues. This includes topics such as the Orchard Replant Program and disaster planning, among other topics.

Briefing notes in this series cover topics related to the Risk Management and Competitiveness division and are typically destined to the attention of the Deputy Minister or Minister. Briefing notes are divided by tabs and folders contain a cover page listing a table of contents with information such as CLIFF number, issue title, date, tab number and the originating branch that sent the briefing note.

Correspondence files contain letters written by the ADM Risk Management and Competitiveness Division or letters on which the ADM was copied to. Letters are mainly replies to inquiries sent from other government agencies to Sasaki or his associates. There are also letters addressed to agricultural foundations, courts, agriculture councils and industry members.

The series contains computer-generated reports of various analyses conducted for the Ministry of Agriculture and their various programs, notably those of the Pesticide Program. The records show how the Ministry was involved in monitoring contaminants in dairy, produce, livestock, and sources of contaminants that may affect the agricultural industry in British Columbia, such as soil samples, animal feed, and animal drinking water.
The reports detail which biological sample was submitted (plant, soil, water, animal tissue) and from where. The reports also provide information about the cost of the analysis and the amount and types of pesticides, metals or other contaminants found in the sample, if applicable.
The records are generally arranged by program. In cases where the program covered a large amount samples from across British Columbia, the records were further divided by region.

Series consists of public information photographs from the Dept. of Agriculture and its successors. The photos depict a wide range of agricultural activity in the province and were used by the ministry to promote the industry and the work of the department. The photographs were originally brought together by the ministry’s Kelowna office and document many industries including farming and food processing. There are files containing images of fruit, vegetable, poultry, dairy, honey and wine production. There are also a large number of files relating to the Agricultural and Rural Development Subsidiary Agreement (ARDSA) which document farming and food processing as well as other areas such as irrigation and fencing.

The files have been arranged into three main groupings: ARDSA images, slide presentations, and general images. The records consist primarily of 35 mm slides although there is also one audiotape and one file that contains contact prints and negatives. Some files also contain the script that was used for presentations.
The records were selectively retained by the BC Government Records Management Branch in accordance with the Special Media records schedule (102905).

The series consists predominantly of fruit and vegetable crop reports and figures for District I, Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands, for the years 1926-1955. Other records included in this series relate to crop production and climate on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Also included in this series is a partial run of the annual Department of Agriculture publication “The Climate of British Columbia” (1924-1945). Some records also document the involvement of the Chinese community in the operation of greenhouses and market gardens.

Some of these records were created by Alan Littler, who served as District Horticulturalist for Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands (District I) between 1952-1971 (from 1971-1981 he served as Supervising Horticulturalist for the Coast). However, the majority of the files were created by Littler’s predecessor, E.H. White, who also served as District Horticulturalist for District I. The District Horticulturalist for Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands was responsible for monitoring and reporting on fruit and vegetable production, primarily on southern Vancouver Island.

The series consists of 214 photographs, mostly glass lantern slides and glass negatives, created or collected by the Dept. of Agriculture sometime between 1900 and 1915.

The lantern slides contain images of fruit trees, orchards, farms, packing boxes, greenhouses, crops and other agricultural activity. A few have descriptive labels which indicate that they were taken in Victoria, Kelowna, Nanaimo and Summerland, and some have photographers identified (D.J. Dwyer, J. Howard A. Chapman and Edgar Fleming). These photographs may have been used for a variety of purposes including public lectures and as illustrations for reports. Some of the slides have been hand coloured. These slides are from accession 198012-018.

The glass negatives from this accession consist of two files. The first file contains 13 negatives identified as being from Atkinson's mushrooms; images of mushrooms and fungi from book on same and appear to have been photographed directly from George F. Atkinson's 1901 books called "Studies of American Fungi". The second file consists of 24 negatives identified as Morris Middleton pruning lecture. Middleton was an assistant horticulturalist for the Dept. of Agriculture and gave pruning workshops and lectures.

The 27 glass negatives from accession 198410-027 show farms and farm buildings, fruit and berry growing as well as fruit packing and pruning classes in Creston, B.C. in 1914 (F.B. Turner photographer) and photos of apple growing medals presented to the Government of British Columbia in 1909.

The series consists of a photograph album created between 1919 and ca. 1922 by the Land Settlement Board. The album contains 166 black and white photographs which depict various agricultural development areas and drainage and dyking projects.

The first 10 photographs in the album are 8 x 10 prints taken by Leonard Frank which show dredging activities. The last 10 photographs in the album are duplicates of these. These photographs are numbered with Leonard Frank's own negative number scheme and have his embossed imprint.

The rest of the album is divided up into districts and projects and most have identifying captions. The districts and projects are as follows:

Some of the photographs have come away from the album and have further identification on the back.

This accession mainly comprises radio commercials promoting British Columbia produce -- fruit, vegetables, eggs, turkey, pork, and dairy products -- and the B.C. Foodstakes. There are also a few recordings that were produced to serve as sound tracks for audio-visual (i.e., slide-tape) presentations.

The series consists of photographs created by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food between 1982 and 1984. These photographs were taken to document irrigation and drainage projects carried out by the Ministry under the Agricultural and Rural Development Subsidiary Agreement (ARDSA). ARDSA projects were managed and administered by the Agriculture and Rural Development Agreement branch (ARDA) of the Ministry. This federal-provincial program provided joint funding of up to $60 million from the federal Department of Regional Economic Expansion (DREE) and the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food. ARDSA funds were directed into four areas including primary resource development funds for irrigation and drainage projects which increase the agricultural productivity of land resources. The 419 photographs in this series include black and white and colour prints and negatives, and colour slides of various projects which took place around the province. Many of the projects and locations in the photographs have been identified but some have not. Not all the prints have negatives and not all the negatives have associated prints. In addition there are negatives intermingled on the strips that appear to be personal photographs of children and houses; probably associated with the photographer. The series also includes a published copy of an executive summary which evaluated the ARDSA program in 1992.

Director of Special Services' correspondence, reports, minutes, press releases, files regarding legislation and program files for dairy, engineering, entomology, plant pathology, soil, veterinary and youth development (farm vacations).

The series consists of committee files created by the Industry Organizations Development Branch of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, and its predecessor body Financial Development Programs Branch, from 1984 to 1998. The files include reports, correspondence, agendas, minutes and other material relating to various economic development committees including: Farmers Institute Advisory Board; Potato Industry Research and Development Advisory Committee; Raspberry Industry Development Trust Fund Advisory Committee; Green Plan Management Committee and the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration.
The series also includes administrative records related to some of the programs including executive correspondence referrals, inquiries, communication plan and audit files. In addition there are four files relating to the dissolution of a Farmers Institute and three files relating to the dissolution of Women's Institutes, 1929-1997.

The series consists of development program files created by the Industry Organizations Development Branch and the Resource Management Branch of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, and its predecessor body Financial Development Programs Branch, from 1990 to 2001. The files include policy and procedures; final reports, some illustrated with photographs; correspondence; and memoranda and studies relating to various economic development programs including:

Canada-British Columbia Agreement on the Agriculture Component of the Green Plan, established to assist the agri-food sector to strive toward environmental sustainability and socio-economic viability;

Canada-British Columbia Farm Business Management Agreement, a program of conditional grants to develop and facilitate the upgrading of the business management skills of B.C. farm managers;

Partners in Progress program, conditional grants to members of the agriculture, fisheries and food industries to form partnerships to act on and develop new ideas and ways of dealing with increasing competition of world markets;

Fisheries Development and Diversification Program (FDDP), established to provide assistance to the commercial fishing industry by stimulating and encouraging the development of scientific research and seafood products, and the application of technology;

Soil Conservation program, a program to accelerate the adoption of environmentally sustainable agricultural production systems to reduce water pollution and soil erosion.

The series consists of trade issues and agreement files created by Trade Competition Branch of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (and its predecessor bodies), from 1986 to 2001 and includes some earlier files from 1978 to 1986. The files include correspondence, memoranda and reports relating to international and interprovincial trade issues and their impact on B.C.'s agriculture, fisheries and food industries, impact assessment and development of industry strategies. In addition there are policy development files regarding foreign and international trade laws and agreements, notably GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) and NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). The series consists of soil conservation project reports created between 1990 and 1994 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and its predecessor agency, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. The Canada-British Columbia Soil Conservation Program (CBCSCP) was a program created to accelerate the adoption of environmentally sustainable agricultural production systems to reduce water pollution and soil erosion. The program concluded March 31, 1994.

The records contain final reports submitted to the Ministry, arranged by project code. In some cases, the files include preliminary reports and correspondence. There are also program evaluation reports from 1994. The records have been classified as 25200-60 under the Agricultural, Fisheries and Food Operational Records Classification System (ORCS).

The series consists of ARDSA reports created between 1976 and 1994 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and its predecessor bodies. ARDSA (Agriculture and Rural Development Subsidiary Agreement) was a joint Canada and British Columbia agreement, originally signed in 1977, which committed up to $60 million to projects which would identify or pursue opportunities for development in the agriculture and food sector. The original agreement was for five years with a one year extension. In 1985, ARDSA became Agri-food Regional Development Subsidiary Agreement and a new five year agreement was signed to provide $40 million to assist in the growth and development of the agri-food sector.

The records contain final ARDSA reports submitted to the Ministry, roughly arranged by date or by ARDSA project code. In some cases, the files include preliminary reports and project proposals. The series consists of the records of the Sumas Drainage, Dyking and Development District created between 1916 and 1975. The records conain general files, orders-in-council, financial statements, engineering reports, assessments, purchase agreements, minutes, history. In addition there are 73 photographs and maps.

This series contains a brands register (interim or working copy) covering the years 1916-1918. Other records in this series include minutes, correspondence, and reports of B.C. Stock Breeders' Association from 1906-1918 as well as minutes of B.C. Brands Commissioners from 1930-1959.

This series contains registers of cattle brands and horse brands, 1914-1947. Includes Brand Owners' Index [Horses] 1914-1930, and "Old Brands" Register [i.e. alphabetical listing of all brands registered in British Columbia between 1871 and 1914]. This unit may be used in conjunction with GR-0409 - GR-0412 and GR-1488 (registers of cattle brands, by district).
A regulated system of branding or marking livestock in British Columbia began with the Cattle Ordinance of 1869 (32 Vic., No. 114) which established a procedure whereby cattle brands and other distinctive markings could be registered with district magistrates for a fee of 25 cents. The system developed further with the Cattle Marking Act, 1875 (BCS 38 Vic. c.14) which defined "cattle" to include "horses, mares, fillies, foals, geldings, colts, bulls, bullocks, cows, heifers, steers, calves, sheep, hogs, mules and asses." Recording officers were appointed for each electoral district and were authorized to keep a register of brands and markings; local justices of the peace were empowered to ensure that brands were not duplicated, obliterated, or defaced and penalties were set for infractions. In 1881 the registration fee was raised to 50 cents (Cattle Brands Act, 44 Vic. c.4) and in 1888 provisions were made for regional cattle districts, whose boundaries were not necessarily identical to those of electoral districts. A distinction was also made in 1888 between the Mainland and Vancouver Island: in Mainland districts, brands were to be registered by an "authorized recording officer" usually the local Government Agent while on the Island brands were to be recorded by district magistrates. These distinctions were abolished in 1894 by the Cattle Act Amendment Act which confirmed Government Agents as "authorized recording officers" throughout the province. The procedure of registering brands was streamlined and centralized by the Brand Act of 1914 (4 Geo. 5 c.9). With this act, provision was made for a Recorder of Brands (responsible to the Minister of Agriculture) and a three man Board of Brand Commissioners. After 1 July 1914 all applications for brand registers or transfers were made through the Recorder's office in Victoria. The fee for brand registration was increased to $1.00 and henceforth all brands were to be renewed annually at a cost of 50 cents.
GR-1488 consists of brands registers and indexes compiled after the passing of the Brand Act of 1914. Volume I of this unit, the "Old Brands" Register, was one of the first records created by the new Recorder of Brands. This volume consists of an alphabetical listing of all brands (cattle and horses) registered in the province between 1871 and July of 1914. The volume was based on older, regional registers [catalogued in BCARS as GR-0409, GR-0410, GR-0411, GR-0412 and GR-1487]. The remaining volumes in this unit (vols. 216) were compiled over the years by staff at Recorder's office from applications received by stockmen throughout the province. Volumes 2 to 12 record brands registered between 1914 and 1930, while volumes 13 to 16 pertain mainly to the period 1930-1947. The Brands Registers in GR-1488 provide the names and addresses of brand owners, brand certificate numbers and dates of allotment, and a detailed description of the various brands and markings. The registers also show when brands were transferred from one owner to another, as well as the status of the brands (i.e. in current use, reissued, or lapsed).
