The collection consists of single items, reports, photocopies, photographs and other small collections donated and loaned to the BC Archives which document all aspects of the political, economic, social and cultural history of the province. There are private records produced by individuals, businesses and organizations and acquired by the Archives over many years from all areas of the Province and varying widely in subject matter. They consist of account books and journals, letters and diaries of gold seekers, pioneers, missionaries, and school teachers, literary manuscripts, photographs, the papers of natural historians and students and the personal and family papers of notable settlers and residents of the province.
There are also some provincial and federal government records which either came to the Archives as single items or files or were removed from other series.

The item consists of a typescript copy and a microfilm copy of a thesis by Derek Lawrence Reimer titled "Travel literature as a source for historical geography: a case study from early British Columbia, 1841-1871." viii, 162 p., appendices. Marriage licence

The item is a marriage licence, (No. 1), signed by Lieutenant-Governor Joseph W. Trutch, granted to Bruno Mellado and Mary Ann Thompson at Victoria, August 14, 1871. On verso is a handwritten certification of marriage dated 22 August 1871, signed by Rev. Simon McGregor, Church of Scotland. It is the first marriage licence to be issued after British Columbia became a province. Note: Erroneously entered as Bruno Milledo on Vital Events record and index.

Biography of John Frederick Hume (Sr.)

The file consists of a copy of a biography of John Frederick Hume (Sr.), pioneer Kootenay businessman. The undated account biographical account is titled "Early events in the life of J. Fred Hume as told to his son, John Frederick Hume Jr."

Miscellaneous letters

The file contains correspondence with Donald Alexander Smith, 1st Baron, Strathcona and Mount Royal and includes a letter from 1900 about the Victoria Public Library's refusal to accept a catalogue of Greek coins and a letter and cable to Mayor of New Westminster re the Provincial Exhibition, 1908.

Slaughter of ellahay

The item is an account of a battle between the Bella Bella and Oweekano people; the battle is described in this account as the "Slaughter of ellahay." Told by Mrs. Poutlass and Joe Machow of Rivers Inlet, and written down by Ned Wesley.

Certificates issued to John William Savory

The file consists of two certificates issued to William John Savary. The first is a Justices license to surveyors to share in contracts etc., for work or materials issued to Savory at Swansthorpe, Norfolk, 1882 and the second is a beneficiary certificate, Ancient Order of United Workmen, Sullivan Lodge, No. 6, Victoria, issued to Savory in 1895.

Hermon letters

The file contains letters kept by Ernest Bolton Hermon, surveyor including one from R.E. Gosnell, Vancouver, dated Aug. 5, 1925, describing his introduction to Vancouver life on his arrival in 1888 and some of the early surveyors in the province (ca. 1888-1898). Covering letter from Hermon to A.S. Musgrave, 1934.
