News item. Silent footage of Craigdarroch Castle and the old homes around it. Close-ups of architectural details. The Heritage Awards for 1979 are included in this item.

[Texada Mine closes]

News item. [Footage at beginning taken underground - too dark.] Interview with Herb Shuttleworth, mines superintendent, about the closure. He says he hates to see such fine crews of miners leave. Shots of overall surface mine operations taken from an elevation. Interview with motel owner who says closure will impact his business. Interview with Arnold Walker, Vice-President and Mine Manager, Texada Mines Ltd. Main reason for shutting down mine, he says, is depletion of ore reserves and increasing costs. Mr. Walker says most of the employees do not want to leave the island -- it is a "nice place to live". All mine shafts will be closed and all the equipment disposed of within the next year. Interview with Ben Nicholas, Shop Steward for Local 168, Rock and Tunnel Workers. He says the company has aided employees by providing extra training to help them get other mining jobs. Aerial footage of the mine surface and surrounding areas. Shots of surface operations taken from outside it, and rather dark shots of the mine's mill.

News item. In a four-part interview, archivist Ainslie Helmcken reviews events at Victoria City Hall in the 19th century. In part 3, Mr. Helmcken explains how the first councils were organized as the new city hall was being completed in the latter part of the 1880's.

[BC Human Resources Minister Bill Vander Zalm on new welfare ruling]

News item. BC Human Resources Minister Bill Vander Zalm speaks with the press about a new welfare ruling. In order to qualify for welfare in B.C., applicants must now prove that they have resided here for the past four months. Mr. Vander Zalm says this ruling is necessary because: "We now have probably the highest rate for social assistance in North America, and we certainly don't want to create a situation whereby we encourage great numbers of people to come from the Maritimes or Quebec or Ontario. . . ."

[Sooke arts and crafts fair]

News item. Outdoor arts and crafts fair in Sooke. Footage shows different crafts in the process of manufacture; costumes worn by crafts people; different types of music and instruments.

[Archaeological dig]

News item. An archaeological dig on a 2000-year-old Indian village site, which is being reconstructed by First Nations high school students. It is both a prehistoric and a historic site. Archaeological spokesman explains how artifacts found on the site will be catalogued and used to trace the evolution of the people who used them. Archaeologist's description of the objects is very good, with close-up shots of the artifacts. No location is given, but dig is probably on one of the Gulf Islands, possibly North Pender or South Pender.
