This series consists of records of the Legislative Library, also known as the Provincial Library. Records include a list of books in the strongroom; catalogue of books in the Legislative Library, 1877; charge list 1892; cataloguing statistics 1912-1918, cash book, 1931-1945; address book; and other library records.

The series consists of carbon copies of the outward correspondence of the Provincial Librarian and Archivist created between April 1, 1915 and May 29, 1936. The correspondence has been bound in 30 volumes and does not include any enclosures or copies of inward correspondence. The letters are filed chronologically, each letter being numbered. An alphabetical index, giving the name of the correspondent and the letter number, is at either the front or the back of the volume, with the exception of volumes 14, 15 and 17. In addition, the numbers of previous and subsequent letters with the same correspondent are hand written on some of the letters themselves.

The carbon copies are not signed but the Provincial Librarian and Archivists are as follows:

Most of the correspondence is routine and deals with book orders and payments but there are also letters regarding the move to the new library in 1915, the acquisition of archival records, procuring transcript copies of archival records, comments about the war, information and advice about historical research and many other topics.

Letter to Provincial Archivist E.O.S. Scholefield from Anthropologist James A. Teit regarding Simon Fraser's identifications of the Shuswap, Chilcotin and Thompson River Indians.

The fonds conists of four notebook diaries kept by Thomas Frederick Seldon between May 12, 1898 and November 10, 1899 recording his experiences while travelling to the Yukon Territory via the Teslin Route, including the Stikine River, and mining and living in northwestern BC. Also included is a photocopy of a transcript of the diaries and Seldon's letters to his parents in England. This transcript was made in 1996 by Betty and George Seldon.

The series consists of correspondence inward and outwards, 1925-1943 with gaps; monthly and annual reports and lists of donations received by the Archives Department of the Provincial Library, 1919-1929, 1934. It also includes Provincial Library reports from 1944 to 1949.

Item consists of a large wall map of British Columbia published in 1909 by the Island Blue Print and Map Company. The map shows cities and towns, highways and railways.

This series consists of Provincial Archives records. Records include 3 visitors books, 1918-1944; miscellaneous correspondence, reports, memoranda and accounts removed from central filing system; and drafts of pioneers' stories, 1954. Contains some records and accounts of the Provincial Library.

This series contains records of the Deputy Provincial Secretary relating to the operations of the Ministry's branches. Many of these records deal with heritage conservation, museums, and cultural organizations. Records also deal with the administration of Royal Canadian Humane Association awards for bravery and life-saving.

GR-1661 is a pot-pourri of records accumulated by the office of the Deputy Provincial Secretary and by his various Assistant Deputy Ministers.The diversity of this collection is testimony to the multi- faceted operations and responsibilities of the Provincial Secretary's department.

A substantial number of the files deal with Heritage Conservation policies and heritage sites, such as Craigflower Schoolhouse, Barkerville, and Fort Steele.Many of the files also deal with cultural organizations and activities, with provincial fitness and recreation programmes, and with special interest groups.Other files in this unit pertain to the Royal Canadian Humane Association awards for bravery (which were coordinated by the ministry), to specific legislation re:the provincial flag, the provincial tartan, etc., and to the organization of out-of-town cabinet meetings.

This series consists of the programme, memoranda, and minutes of meeting of the planning committee responsible for celebrations marking the golden anniversary of Canadian confederation. Records include correspondence, directories, advertisements and pamphlets relating to the diamond anniversary of Canadian confederation.

The series consists of a copy of the program for the dedication ceremony of the site of British Columbia's Centennial Survey Monument which took place at the new Museum and Archives precinct at the corner of Government and Belleville Streets in Victoria on Wednesday June 21, 1967.

The program includes a description of the ceremony, speeches, press release, photocopies of relevant newspaper articles, photocopy of invitation and guest list and six black and white photographs of the ceremony including the unveiling of the monument and an aerial view of the site.

RECORDED: Victoria (B.C.), [1991?] SUMMARY: In an interview with Fran Gundry, Madge Wolfenden discusses her career as a librarian and archivist at the Provincial Library and Provincial Archives of British Columbia. Madge Wolfenden Hamilton (1893-1992) worked at PABC from 1914 to 1954. She was Acting Provincial Archivist from 1942 to 1945, and Assistant Provincial Archivist when she retired in 1954. The interview begins with a discussion of her schooling in Victoria, B.C., her higher education, and her apprenticeship at the Victoria Public Library and the University of California, Berkeley.
