Beautiful British Columbia magazine slide albums

  • GR-3307
  • Series
  • [ca. 1966-1987]

Series consists of colour photographs taken by staff photographers in the Special Services Branch and its predecessor bodies, the Film and Photographic Branch and the Photographic Branch ca. 1960 to 1987. The photographs were taken mainly to illustrate Beautiful British Columbia magazine, a publication produced by the Ministry of Tourism, but could also be used for a variety of other publications and presentations. The photographs were taken using colour slide film. The slides were then given a classification number and filed in plastic sleeves in binders. The classification system consisted of region or subject group number followed by the image number. These images cover all areas of the province and depict natural scenes as well as towns and cities, individuals, groups, animals and plants. For indexes to these photographs, see the related series: Indexes to Beautiful British Columbia magazine photographs. Item level descriptions for over 7000 images from this series are available on the BC Archives Web site. Some of the images have been scanned and may be viewed online.

Indexes to Beautiful British Columbia magazine photographs

  • GR-3305
  • Series
  • [ca. 1980-1987]

Series consists of various files which list or index the Beautiful British Columbia magazine photographs. The indexes were created by the Special Services branch between 1980 and 1987 and were transferred with the photographs. The indexes consist of several lists arranged in numerical order. Most of the lists refer to the slides only and include both a master volume and specific lists by region or subject group number. There is also a master negative list which covers the negatives and prints. The series also includes a four volume subject index, arranged alphabetically by subject, which covers the slides, negatives and prints. The indexes and lists are incomplete in that not every single photograph is listed or indexed. In addition, the indexes may list a negative, slide or print that was removed from the photograph image bank before transfer to the BC Archives.

Lists of the prints in the large print albums (GR-3305) are with the albums themselves, tucked into a pocket in the inside cover. A reference copy of all the album lists is available in a binder stored with the old photo reference binders, ask for it at the retrievals desk.

Series consists of colour photographs taken by staff photographers in the Special Services Branch and its predecessor bodies, the Film and Photographic Branch and the Photographic Branch ca. 1960 to 1986. The photographs were taken mainly to illustrate Beautiful British Columbia magazine, a publication produced by the Ministry of Tourism, but could also be used for a variety of other publications and presentations. The photographs were taken using colour or slide film. The negatives were then given a classification number and filed in negative drawers in the branch image bank along with some copies of prints and transparencies or slides. The classification system consisted of region or subject group number followed by the image number. These images cover all areas of the province and depict natural scenes as well as towns and cities, individuals, groups, animals and plants. Many of the earliest negatives were removed from the ministry's existing Travel Industry photograph library (which included some Forest Service photographs) and renumbered with the Beautiful British Columbia magazine classification system. Later negatives were taken specifically for Beautiful British Columbia magazine and were numbered only under the new system.

For indexes to these photographs, see the related series: GR-3305 Indexes to Beautiful British Columbia magazine photographs.
